Almost exactly a year ago, we brought you news that 20th Century Fox was remaking the Michael Douglas adventure film, Romancing The Stone ,with Eagle Eye’s Daniel McDermott penning the script. Now the film has a director in the form of The Ugly Truth’s Robert Luketic (insert personal opinion here). To make matters worse, it also seems like Hollywood is about to remake the 1987 Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn romantic team-up, Overboard!

It looks like the Romancing The Stone remake will hit the big-screen first, as the producer of the film, Emma Watts, was recently named President of Production at 20th Century Fox. With Luketic involved, one would imagine that the comedy quota of the remake will be ramped up and the adventure angle will be … er… god knows, really!
In the original RTS, Douglas played a fortune-hunter who becomes involved with Katheleen Turner’s romance novelist in the search for a long-lost jewel (the 80s was, admittedly, a crazy time for movie plots).

Luketic’s The Ugly Truth star Katherine Heigl is also now attached to the Overboard remake. The original film starred Goldie Hawn as an amnesiac millionairess who falls off her yacht only to have Kurt Russell pass her off as his wife (I told you, the 80s: crazy time for movie plots). Heigel is obviously attached in theGoldie Hawn role (although a switch in sexes may make this remake bearable) – could her Ugly Truth co-star Gerard Butler step into Russell’s shoes? Well, he was in the frame to replace Russell in the now defunct Escape From New York Remake…
Bill Collage and Adam Cooper are currently working on a script for Overboard that will be produced by Devon Franklin.
I can’t say that I’m excited about any of this. As a child of the 1980’s, I have fond memories of both these films – I was taken to Overboard on my seventh birthday, so I have an emotional attachment to that film. While Romancing The Stone was a fun adventure film that had a charming lead in Michael Douglas and great support from Danny DeVito.
Considering that both these films are from genres that have endless material for originality (sort of), it really does make you wonder: why remake them? Having said that, I don’t know what goes through a Movie Executive’s mind, so I’m sure that there is some fiscal sense to be discerned. Somewhere.

Katherine Heigi to star in two 80's remakes.
With every one of these remake posts, a little part of me dies violently.

Well, it looks like Robert Luketic ("The Ugly Truth," "Monster-in-Law") may direct the in-development "Romancing the Stone" remake. Is it me, or does that seem like a step down? Granted, Robert Zemeckis wasn't big yet at the time he made his version, but I just can't see Luketic following the same path. Maybe in ten years he'll be remaking Zemeckis' own "Polar Express" using motion capture again. I kid, but also, how true does that seem?

Also, Sony wants Katherine Heigl to star in a remake of "Overboard," which starred Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russel back in 1987. Shoot that is a long time ago, it needs to be updated! What is the connection here? Word on the street is that Robert Luketic, who directed Heigl in "The Ugly Truth," may want her to star in the "Stone" remake, along with her co-star Gerard Butler. So there you go.

And while Butler and Heigl wouldn't make the WORST pair if you HAD to remake "RTS," I still say NO, just on principle. "Stone" is fine the way it is. It doesn't need bouncy pop songs or whatever else a hack director from this decade would bring to it. Can't we just call it quits on the remakes people? Hello? Anyone?

Seems like 80's horror movies aren't the only thing being remade.

Well, Romancing the Stone was a great movie. But Overboard... I can't see anyone getting upset over a remake.. I mean, who cares if they remake it or not. The original wasn't that good. They should cast Kate Hudson in the remake..

If you saw, it said Heigi will be in it.

i remember reading a few months ago of romancing of the stone getting a remake. But interesting news that overboard will be too.

Jennifer Lopez and her butt to star in Overboard remake

OVERBOARD, one of those perennial 1980's comedies, is one I've also never seen. But for whatever reason, every household in my family had it in their VHS cabinets. And whenever I saw Kurt Russell's mug, I always wondered, "Why isn't this BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA?! Where is BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA?! I WANNA WATCH BIG IN LITTLE CHINA AGAIN!"

Sadly, I still react this way.

All that said, I can't tell you if a proposed remake of the Kurt Russell/Goldie Hawn boat comedy is a good thing or some sort of travesty to throw your arms up at. According to THR, the original film directed by Garry Marshall, "centered on a snooty, spoiled woman who falls off her yacht and is taken to the hospital by a local, morally challenged carpenter. When she wakes up with amnesia, he convinces her she is his wife, thereby getting a free housekeeper for his four boys."

Jennifer Lopez and her ample posterior are in talks to fill the Goldie Hawn role. No word on who the dude would be, but I'll leave that bit of casting speculation up to you guys.

Lopez can next be seen in the fairly atrocious-looking THE BACK-UP PLAN on April 16th.

it's the 80's, 50's and 20's again. that's just how generations work.

so is it Katherine Heigl or Jennifer Lopez to star in Overboard?

I don't know does it matter? Maybe its just the other movie then instead.

Gerard Butler would also fit for a Romancing the Stone remake as well.

Well, he has almost turned into Mr. Romantic Comedy with The Ugly Truth and The Up coming The Bounty Hunter. And if that does well(like I'm sure it will) He will continue to make more of these films.

What next "Big Trouble in Little China" with Gerald Butler or Zack Galifinikis

Seriously? Why do we need to remake these? Aren't romantic comedies today remakes of old movies with new characters, anyway? Why do we need full fledged remakes of these.

:down

With the complete lack of originality in hollywood...it's going to be a VERY sad day if I can't manage to sell my ORIGINAL screenplay. :/

I don't know what's worse...

The fact that they're actually remaking a mediocre movie like Overboard...

Or the fact that Jennifer Lopez still has an acting career...

The RTS remake couldnt be any worse than The Jewel of the Nile sequel. lol

i don't care for Overboard, but it's so strange to remake it. why not do a ripoff instead? it's not like it was beloved by geeks or a bonafide classic.

Romancing the Stone..on the other hand..
