And this is exactly why it is so hard for sexual assault victims to come forward.

DEARBORN, Mo. -- Two-and-a half years after charges were brought, a Dearborn man has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a young girl on a regular basis over a period of six to eight years.

Darren L. Paden, 52, pleaded guilty Monday, August 17 to sexually abusing the girl once or twice a month from the time she was five or six years old until she was 12 or 13.

"While this defendant admitted to his horrible crimes the day he was arrested, he continually delayed his day of reckoning," said Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahnd. "Sadly, during that time, many in the community sided with him, compounding the trauma experienced by his victim. Now there can be no doubt: Darren Paden repeatedly committed monstrous acts against a young girl.”

Paden admitted he began watching pornographic movies with the girl in 2001 or 2002. After watching a pornographic movie with her while she was 5 or 6 years old, Paden began sexually assaulting the girl. Paden claims he abused the child once or twice a month, over a period of at least six years. Paden told the girl it was “their little secret” and that she should not tell her mother or anyone else.

...

Even on Monday, when FOX 4 went around the small town and knocked on doors, we talked to more than a dozen people off-camera who were shocked by the charges. Some even defended him, others called the accusations rumors, despite Paden's guilty plea. Others just said they thought the charges had been dropped because they didn't believe there was anyway Paden could've done this.

Paden’s friends and family wrote the court letters of support previous to Paden’s sentencing, citing Paden’s wife and children’s wellbeing and listing off his good deeds—his work helping in hospitals overseas, his status as a junior deacon in the local church. A trustee at Paden’s church sent in a letter saying that “only God, Darren, and the victim know what happened.”

Dixie Wilson, Paden’s great-aunt, told reporters she doesn’t believe the victim but says she’s “sorry for the girl if it happened.” If it happened, though, doesn’t seem to be an accurate way to look at it: According to Paden himself, he sexually assaulted the victim once or twice a month for a period of at least six years starting in the mid-2000s.

The amount of support Paden has received despite his crimes has been troubling not just to the victim but also frustrating to the prosecutor on the case, who told those assembled for Paden’s trial that he was “deeply troubled” by the fact that the perpetrator was receiving support while his victim was being shunned.

The piece of crap admitted he did it, and yet still people deny it. So many love to question the victims, to abuse them, to treat them like they did something wrong even when everything says otherwise.

I'd punch those people in the mouth and then, when they get upset about it, say that the punch was just a rumor.

People are garbage.

****ing hell... "he did a good thing once and has a wife, that means he can't have sexually abused the girl despite admitting to it." Sickening.

But how do you know he really did that to her? Do you have some sort of evidence? Unless you are God, how would you know and what gives you the right to judge?

By the way, his adult son is also being prosecuted.

Makes sense, can't trust victims. They want to go through all this emotional trauma just for some "quick" payday.

People have this notion that all monsters look like disgusting hobos or "creepy" strangers. Its hard for them to imagine friendly Darren that goes to church and volunteers at hospitals could possibly be diddling kids. It doesnt fit into their views of the man so they dismiss it.

Thats just how the human brain works. However that is supposed to be countered by having an open mind and by accepting facts and evidence regardless of preconceived notions and prior beliefs. And thats where lots of people go wrong. They dont accept facts if it conflicts with their beliefs about things. They'd rather bend and ignore reality than admit that they might be wrong about something or someone.

Considering he himself testified that he was molesting the girl for six years, apparently she doesn't believe him either.

These good God-fearing churchgoing morally vacant people should be ashamed of themselves.

Speaking of not all pedophiles being ugly monsters and some being clean-cut, respectable churchfolk, a member of the congregation at my former church went to prison for molesting refugee children he and his family were housing in their home.

To his tiny sliver of credit (I guess), he eventually turned himself in. Nobody had any idea until he walked into the police station one day and poured his guts out from what I heard, saying he couldn't stop his urges but couldn't live with himself, and wanted to go to jail so he couldn't do it anymore.

I will say this. Many people may call that man a hypocrite for being a Christian and a sexual abuser (which is true) but turning himself in and admitting that he abused someone was the respectable and Christian thing to do.

Good deeds don't wipe away what he did nor did it make his guilt disappear. Now he will make things right by sitting his ass in prison.

If only more people with those urges had the fortitude and moral sense to face punishment and justice rather than hurting kids. Its a shame he didnt turn himself in sooner or wasnt able to get help before he molested someone, but Im thankful that guy turned himself in at all and realized he had to be stopped somehow.

Well as long as one of the thousands things someone does is the right "Christian thing to do", that makes them a good Christian. :o

I believe in the poo in the food argument. Once your food has poo in it, it always has poo in it and there is no chance in hell you are eating it.

No, it doesn't. But from his point of view, it was what a Christian should do.

And raping a child wasn't? Because that is a long time of doing the wrong thing.

People are capable of evil regardless of religious beliefs or lack thereof. Nobody is infallable. Admitting his crime and accepting his fate doesn't nullify what he did. But it is better than keeping it a secret and continuing to live his life as if he didn't commit his heinous acts.

He's a piece of s*** but at least he's a honest piece of s***. Now he gets to pay for what he's done and try to become a better human being.

Well, I know karma will come back to haunt him in prison. And there won't be a Morgan Freeman narrating things. Believe that.

Oh, he's definitely gonna get that booty torn up when the inmates find out who he is.

Pedophilia is one of those things that's only trying to be treated once people get caught. There is such a stigma against it, and rightly so, that no person wants to go and admit they have these urges especially once they've committed the crime. I've seen a few articles online about the online communities these people frequent where some of them try to help each other. Of course plenty there just don't care and revel in it which is sickening. But from what I read there are levels amongst themselves and apparently anyone who likes the really young children is looked down upon by the others. It's just so unknown when it comes to the world of psychology because it's universally hated by basically everyone in the world except among themselves. it really needs to be studied so we can figure out effective tools to keep people from hurting these children

I agree. From the psychological perspective, these people have disorders and need help. Some of them are demonized and rightfully so but there are also some that are victims themselves. There are many that don't act upon their impulses. This is a very real psychological disorder along with hebephilia and ephebophilia.

Good post DJ. I guess people if you're evil you'll act on urges if you're not it must not be that serious. I wish people were more understanding and you can put all of your problems that need help out there for the world, but that's now how people are.

Well I suffer from schizophrenia and if I don't have meds I hear voices. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to have urges that make me attracted to children. At the same time though it's hypocritcal that guys will watch porn with girls flaunting their ID that shows they just turned 18 but then look down on pedophiles. I still remember when the Internet was all abuzz about the Olsen twins becoming legal. It goes back to that levels thing I talked about earlier in their communities. I remember in high school these chicks would be proud they were dating college guys and I would just think technically that guy is a child molester. How many seasons of to catch a predator did they have? The only reason that show was cancelled was because one of the guys killed himself. They certainly weren't running out of predators. If I'm not mistaken I believe the group that helped with the stings is still doing so they just don't televise it now. In some states it's legal for a guy whose 18-24 to date a 16 or 17 year old. My little sister is 16 and my daughter will be 16 in 6 more years and I'd be pissed off if some college kid was dating them.

Just goes to show how much people fail to understand that paedophilia can be comitted by all types of human beings... not just creepy stereotypes.

And in this example, people are so afraid if accepting that, they are denying it right in the face of his confession... It must be a lie, a cover up, some misunderstanding. .. anything to avoid facing the reality of human nature and the things normal seeming people you would count as friends or loved ones are capable of.

Are they psychological disorders, though? I've always looked at these -philias as unfortunate sexual preferences. Sure, you could probably suppress their urges with medication but you can't remove their sexual preferences altogether, just like you can't turn a homosexual person into a straight person.

Pretty much. Under DSM-5 it has been redefined as an disorder only if pedophiles act on their urges. Otherwise pedophilia is simply considered an atypical sexual interest, and a usually hardwired one.
