Ang Lee's 'Life of Pi'

I love how this film doesn't anthropomorphize the animals at all.

Yeah, they really screwed up with that and missed a major opportunity. Imagine the cross-marketing they could have done with Frosted Flakes! They would have made millions!

Richard Parker was a mixture of a real tiger and CGI but most of what was in the film was mainly CGI especially with he was interacting with Pi, etc.

One scene that was definitely a real tiger was when we saw Richard Parker being poked by a stick.

Thanks, I hope they have an extensive look at the process on the Blu Ray, should be fascinating.

I liked that as well, every aspect of the film was so well gauged.

Can't wait for the Blu Ray.

Leaps above Caesar.

The thing with Caesar is that he was human qualities to him that make him look less real but allows the performance to come out more. I'd Richard Parker is better Caesar but not as good as Maurice. Maurice was just ridiculous. Not that it matters much this is a hopefully shoo in for best visual effects, though it'll probably get screwed like Rise of the Planet of the Apes did.

Wouldn't have worked, only Frosted Flakes. Chester is a cheetah, not a tiger.
Good point:woot:

I take it you're not a Family Guy fan.

I can't post the video, but go to youtube and look up "Chester the Cheetah Family Guy."
I will, thanks:up: I love Family Guy, but I haven't seen enough episodes. (obviously)
From now on, I will watch more Family Guy and eat more Cheetos:woot:

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that Ang Lee's Life of Pi, which is nominated for 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, will arrive on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD on March 12. Here's the full announcement:

Believe the unbelievable. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment presents a groundbreaking cinematic experience you will have to see to believe when LIFE OF PI debuts on stunning Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD from March 8 internationally and on March 12 in North America. Based on the acclaimed best-selling novel from Yann Martel that has been published in 40 languages, and brought to life by visionary Academy Award winning director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), this magical adventure of hope, wonder, survival, and the power of the human spirit has been celebrated by critics all over the world.

A “magnificent and moving” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone) motion picture event that has been hailed as “a masterpiece” (Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times), taking in over $500 million in worldwide box office. LIFE OF PI follows Pi Patel, a young man on a fateful voyage who, after a spectacular disaster, is marooned on a lifeboat with the only other survivor, a fearsome 450 lb Bengal Tiger named Richard Parker. Hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery Pi and his majestic companion make an amazing and unexpected connection.

With incredible cinematography from Oscar nominee Claudio Miranda** (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Tron: Legacy) and masterful performances from newcomer Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan (The Amazing Spider-Man, Slumdog Millionaire), Rafe Spall (Prometheus, Anonymous) and Gerard Depardieu (Paris, je t’aime, City of Ghosts), the LIFE OF PI Blu-ray 3D is loaded with over two hours of behind-the-scenes special features, including deleted scenes that will make you rethink the story (also presented in 3D), five featurettes that dive into the making of the visual spectacle, 60 pieces of inspirational artwork, storyboards and more. That would have been grrrrrreat! :oldrazz:

I finally saw this about two weeks ago. It was a 10am show and until just before the movie started, I had the whole theater to myself. There wound up being about 6 people in the audience, and one of them screamed her head off the first time Richard Parker pounced in 3D, which was pretty hilarious.

But I loved the movie. Can't wait to get the blu-ray for this.

Just saw this. The visuals are insane – from everything in terms of cinematography, imagery to effects. The story is solid and makes you ponder in a good way. But the visuals is what makes it so damn engrossing at times

7/10

Something that broke my heart the 1st was even more powerful the 2nd time around

The way Orange Juice, the Orang Outan looks at him with maternal eyes:csad:

Also

The way Lee films Richard Parker lunging at the Hyena. He seems to be coming straight out from the Kid. After all, as we discover in the end, he is the tiger

watching the movie the second time since december was amazing. Ang Lee is one of the best

Yeah, this. And I also got that when times are unbelievably tough, sometimes the only way to survive is by believing in what he calls "the better story", which can be religion, fairy tales, Richard Parker whatever...
I watched the film a second time and knowing the ending it was a different experience. I paid close attention to the shipwreck and what happens with the animals on the boat. Something that broke my heart the 1st was even more powerful the 2nd time around

I read online the theory of the Meerkats being actually maggots. Pretty interesting, sad and gruesome at the same time

Amazing movie. Like I said before it deserves the Oscar for best film. Nothing comes close for me this year.
And at first I didn't want to see it because I thought it was about religion:o

If I ever meet Ang Lee, I would love to ask him why the narrative you allude to above was discussed rather than shown. I wonder if it was a budget issue, or if he felt that it would take the movie to a very bad place.

It's meant to just be alluded to but never outright shown, so we don't know which story is actually true. Isn't that what makes it so interesting?

Was so sure Life was gonna get screwed this year on all the awards it deserved, but its cleaning up! Such a great surprise!

Its deserved every single oscar its gotten so far and should probably win Best Picture too. Congrats to Ang Lee for a masterful job.
