Ang Lee's 'Life of Pi'

It got a nice chunk of gold this evening. Despite not winning BP, I am still happy.

Yeah, and it seemed to be a favorite in the room too, which was nice. A lot of love for it tonight.

Fantastic movie, I can't complain about Argo winning coz I liked that as well, but Pi was hands down the best for me.

This was the only movie I cared about winning an award, I wasn't interested who won any of the performances awards. I'm glad Ang got best director but he should have scored the double with best picture as well.

I'm so glad Lee won BD. Well deserved.

Honestly I really wished this won Adapted Screenplay. Yann Martel was absolutely in love with this film...Claiming it as a perfect adaptation.

If I ever meet Ang Lee, I would love to ask him why the narrative you allude to above was discussed rather than shown. I wonder if it was a budget issue, or if he felt that it would take the movie to a very bad place.
think about the story that he told .visualize it. imagine if you would see the footage 5 minutes before the ending.

people would go out depressed. right now they know that the same info and they know
which story is true
.they are happy and positive. seeing the
real ending
would destroy them.

you are joking right? maybe you need to watch the movie again :)

everyone should watch Life of Pi at least 2 times.

Other than the tiger itself, I thought the vast majority of the effects in Life of Pi were subpar (as per usual with Rhythm and Hues). I am very disappointed to see this film take best special effects.

And don't get me started on the cinematography award.

No I'm not joking, and I've seen the movie 3 times. It's meant for the individual viewers to decide which ending was real, depending on the type of person they are. Perhaps you missed the movie's message.

This screenrant article explains it nicely.

hmmm i think the movie is very deep. but for the whole movie and themes to work the real ending has to be the last story that he tells.

Dark B, you seemed to have really liked this film, but I've also seen you extolling Deakins' merits.

How do you feel about the outcome in the cinematography category?

No it doesn't have to be the real ending. I think that the fact that no one knows which ending is true makes what we see in the movie so much more powerful, because everything has a double meaning to it.

Deakins did the best cinematography on real location. Life of Pi had the best cinematography in an effects heavy movie.

but it is easier to have perfect cinematography when you are inside a studio and you have 100% freedom over the lighting. you can have perfect rim lighting in every shot. on real location the weather and time of the sun is against you. but then on the other side when you have greenscreen you dont see everything so its again a hard job.Claudio didnt see the tiger to frame the shot with Pi and Richard Parker. they used a lot of cgi reflections around the boat.so it was very complicated to find the right angle for the lighting and shadows. its always hard to work with so much amount of water and splashing. the cinematography has a lot to do with shadows. yet in Life of Pi they had almost no shadows. so Cladiio had an insane hard job. so here Deakins had it easier because on real location you can compose everything in the frame. you see everything.

i can not choose. both had perfect cinematography. i am happy that they both used a digital camera.

Actually, I think the Screenrant article that ThePowerCosmic posted illustrates perfectly how the themes work just fine without either ending being definitively "real."

As for cinematography, Roger Deakins is my absolute favorite DP alive, but I was perfectly happy with Life of Pi winning this go-round.

Well deserved. This movie was more than phenomenal. Since The Master didn't get it, I'm glad Pi got cinematography.

Life of Pi's commercial, critical and now Oscar success has got me so amped that I am going to be one of the suckers plonking down 40$ for the blu-ray release on March 12. Yeah, I'm a carnie mark, so sue me.

It's the only one that deserved best special effects since Batman wasn't there. What movie did you think deserved it?

i recommend watching every Ang Lee interview that you can find. he is so smart.....so smart. the way he thinks about directing a movie is amazing.

I think we should just suck the guy's balls right here, this very instant. C'mon, all together now.

No teeth.
