Ang Lee's 'Life of Pi'

I'm hoping the Slumdog Millionaire effect is in force this year. And Pi is a better film on so many levels.

I finally saw ZDT last night and yeah this is still easily my film of the year.

I just saw this. What a fantastic movie. Easily my fave for 2012. 9/10

Just saw this, too. It's a masterpiece. I've disliked several of Lee's movies, but I could never accuse them of being pretentious. This one is undertakes such a heavy task and not once does it get pretentious or Oscar baity. I'm still in shock from seeing it. Can't really review it.

Oh, and if there's one movie that could convince me that 3D has merit, it's Life of Pi. That is all.

Fantastic movie, the emotions were strong and felt genuine. The score and the visuals were breathtaking(That whale scene was amazing!). I actually find myself noticing how beautiful the world around me is more after watching it. Gonna watch it again to absorb it better.

Was Richard Parker full-on CGI? If so,WOW! :wow:

I'd say 9/10, beginning dragged a little before getting on the ship only reason really. Think it will do good business for 13 + crowd but may be too intense for those younger- even adults were flinching in the theater (more than I've seen from some horror films). Disney is working on the JUNGLE BOOK which should be really awesome- just got to maybe tone the tiger down in that one. Even though the tiger was awesome, the beginning just seems like it may be too intense for the younger kids.

What do you mean? Disney is making a new Jungle Book?

Just seen it. Ang Lee is without doubt one of the biggest storytellers in modern cinema.

Hellz yeah! Nobody can say this movie can't win because it is too obscure now!

Many great movies have won Best Picture without winning any acting awards, so I hope Life Of Pi will join that group.

I saw this tonight, stunning movie, it's simplistic but in all the right ways, it's the kind of film that only comes along once in a while, the kind that lifts the spirits and astonishes you with the images that propel the story.

How much of Richard Parker was CGI? he's right up there with Caesar for me.

From what I understand it was a fully GC tiger.

I liked the message of the movie. Or atleast this is what I got out of it. Believing in god is like believing a fairytale. It could be true, but not likely. In reality there is only nature. And nature is cruel, unforgiving and doesn't give two ****s about anyone, it just is.

That's about as good an encapsulation of the theme of the film and novel as I've ever read.

Yeah, this. And I also got that when times are unbelievably tough, sometimes the only way to survive is by believing in what he calls "the better story", which can be religion, fairy tales, Richard Parker whatever...
I watched the film a second time and knowing the ending it was a different experience. I paid close attention to the shipwreck and what happens with the animals on the boat. Something that broke my heart the 1st was even more powerful the 2nd time around

The way Orange Juice, the Orang Outan looks at him with maternal eyes:csad:

Also

The way Lee films Richard Parker lunging at the Hyena. He seems to be coming straight out from the Kid. After all, as we discover in the end, he is the tiger

Also

I read online the theory of the Meerkats being actually maggots. Pretty interesting, sad and gruesome at the same time

Amazing movie. Like I said before it deserves the Oscar for best film. Nothing comes close for me this year.
And at first I didn't want to see it because I thought it was about religion:o

I also love how the 1st time we see Richard Parker, it's his passing reflection in a puddle of water, almost kind of foreshadowing what's to come.

Amazing, I felt sure they shot some real tiger footage, what an achievement! Life of Pi is nominated for best SFX right?

That's what I got from it as well, it's about hope and what we have to tell ourselves to maintain hope in the most trying times.

Richard Parker was a mixture of a real tiger and CGI but most of what was in the film was mainly CGI especially with he was interacting with Pi, etc.

One scene that was definitely a real tiger was when we saw Richard Parker being poked by a stick.

I was wondering how does Richard Parker get the goat through the cage?

A tiger's unbelievable strength is such that it would be like you pulling a cloth bag filled with chopped liver and drinking straws through cage bars.

I'm aware of that. I was wondering why the goat looked pretty intact and not a mess of blood and bones. But maybe RP just slid her through the bars.
Anyway I was just curious and it's not really a problem for me (awesome scene and awesome film), and thanks for answering my question:yay:
