Annihilation - from Ex Machina writer/director Alex Garland

Hands most anticipated film next year.

Wow, that really captures the eerie, frightening yet beautiful quality, dreaminess, and mood of the books.
Wonder if/how they will tackle bizarre things like the inverted "tower"/"tunnel" anachronistic POV's?

:shock

I mean I was here for this the moment it was announced, but yep, unsurprisingly looks great.

I didn't know Benedict Wong was in this.

Benny Wong adds another science fiction property to his list.

Yep. Be interesting to see how Garland tackles some of that stuff from the book.

What we saw in the teaser looks very faithful to what was described in the book so I'm very impressed. Fully realizing visuals from book descriptions is not an easy task.

I figured it was Duncan you were thinking of, and yep, he completed Mute last week apparently, will be released on Netflix.

Yeah not sure why I got them mixed up. Enjoyed Ex Machina a lot. And it introduced me to Alicia Vikander :hmr:.

Oh boy I can see this affecting numbers in the US. People won't go out to see it and will just wait three weeks to see this from their comforts of their home.

Netflix and Paramount/Skydance are negotiating a deal on the Alex Garland-directed Annihilation that will give the streaming service international rights to the sci-fi thriller, and an opportunity to release the film on its overseas streaming service 17 days after the film premieres in the the U.S. on February 23. Paramount will do the traditional theatrical release in the U.S., Canada and China.

Man, that sucks for people overseas who wanted to watch it on the big screen.

How a Clash Between Producers Led to a Netflix Deal
In one corner is Scott Rudin, whose many credits include The Social Network and Lady Bird, and in the other sits David Ellison, the head of Skydance Productions, the company that made Geostorm and Terminator Genysis. Skydance is also a major co-financier of Paramount’s slate.

The movie, which wrapped shooting July 2016, had a poor test screening this summer that sources say was the root of the conflict. After the screening, Ellison became concerned that the movie was “too intellectual” and “too complicated” and wanted changes made to make it appeal to a wider audience. They included making Portman’s character more sympathetic as well as tweaking the ending.

Rudin, who executive produced Ex Machina, sided with Garland, defending the movie and refused to take notes. Rudin was able to hold his line, according to a source, because he has final cut.

Things got testier from there, with Paramount caught in the middle. The studio ultimately decided that finding another distributor, preferably a streamer, could salvage the situation.

Having read the book, none of this ^ surprises me. It's mood and visually driven, wildly open ended, and allows great freedom for interpretation.
Everything they suggest won't "appeal to wider audience", is likely everything Garland found interesting about it, and the reason he wanted to make it.

Thank goodness for Scott Rudin.

I read the book also and if the movie is anything like the book then it probably won't appeal to mass audiences. It really isn't blockbuster type material and without Arrival or Ex Machina level buzz it would probably struggle to turn a profit in movies theaters.

At least the movie is being released as the director intended and they aren't compromising the material.
