Annihilation - from Ex Machina writer/director Alex Garland

test screening question.
''do you think the main character is unsympathetic?''
''yes''

wtf do you expect to find out at a test screening with questions similar to this?

As long as I get to see Garland's uncompromising vision of this film on the big screen, I'm happy.

Sucks for the international crowd who can only watch on Netflix.

Lol, test screenings. Hope they invited those imbeciles who tested Justice League TC. :o :cmad:

Garland feels like a present day Carpenter. Interested to see the film.

After the screening, Ellison became concerned that the movie was “too intellectual” and “too complicated,” according to sources, and wanted changes made to make it appeal to a wider audience.

:barf: :barf: :barf:

I wish it was going to VOD and theaters at the same time in the US. Even though I'm excited to watch this I doubt I'll feel like going to the theater to watch this.

I'm game because of Alex Garland but this trailer in particular just gave off a pretty standard "monster survival" movie. I wonder if he's making some kind of statement in making the entire crew female.

The quick cut portion has me intrigued the most.

That was in the book.
And that's part of the appeal, absolutely no statement is made about it, that just is the crew.

It felt like a trailer designed to make the movie appear more conventional than it probably is.

Wait till they get "her" in the sequel. Yeah it's not happening, this character isn't meant to be all sympathetic. You are not particularly supposed to connect or entirely empathize with her on this "journey".
General audience expecting a familiar hero journey arc, or formula 3 act character arc, are going to find themselves uncomfortable, and squirming in their seat, when the formula they are conventionally used to isn't there.
RiplEY doesn't finally embrace her role, claim her weapon and cut down the big bad.
They will reject this.

That will bite them in the ass.
That is not the story, yet they are selling it as conventional, when the gen audience doesn't get that, they will "...do not want!" and thumbs down like a bunch of brats. :)

If I ever get around to it, I'll read it after I've seen it.

I've seen enough out of the horror genre to notice that writers/directors default to the last remaining lady whether because she was the most badass or because she was the most innocent.

You're suggesting Potrman's character is neither. Anything about her crew without spoiling much?

I haven't read the book but judging from what I've heard about it and the whole test screening/change in distributor thing, it feels like that trailer is probably really misleading. Still looking forward to this though.

Without spoiling anything, I'd say she's the most curious.
Of course the movie will have it's own take.

One member of the four women team is more than she seems.

I couldn't say more than that without going too deep into spoiler territory.

Portman's character the biologist isn't badass she is a loner who enjoys the company of nature more than people if I remember correctly
