Annihilation - from Ex Machina writer/director Alex Garland

#Annihilation is big budget Alex Garland with all the head-spinning intelligence of "Ex Machina." It's violent and patient and then suddenly so transfixing you're pinned to your seat. It'll take time to process. Another auteur studio gamble from Paramoint after "mother!"

ANNHILATION is, in wholly inelegant terms, one hell of a mindf***. Most of the time, I didn't want it to end; occasionally, I was so unsettled I thought I might keel over.

The early reviews seem to be good. Why would Paramount abandon the international market and sell to Netflix if this is the case?

Just saw #Annihilation, and damn, it’s gorgeous. Beautifully done, riveting and smart. Going to need to process this one for a while, and I want to see it again!

This much is clear: #Annihilation is NOT the movie you walk out and take to Twitter for a quick opinion. It's grabs you hard and leaves you frazzled. Hats off to Paramount for letting Garland be himself on a bigger budget

Make no mistake, #Annihilation is a new sci-fi classic. Brilliant, thrilling, and provocative, it has as much metaphoric depth as it does narrative tension. I’m floored.

#ANNIHILATION: This is the type of sci-if we always say we want to see. Bold, challenging, singular, visually dazzling. Would not be the least bit surprised to see it hailed as a masterpiece (and it might actually be one).

Paramount is cutting their losses. They'll be covered as the Netflix money will properly amortize them. The movie is a hard sell and Paramount had no idea how to market this film properly. Look at BR2049, even big studios like WB (domestic) and Sony (OS) couldn't make it work as much as they would have wanted. Couple that with the fact that Paramount are in dire straits financially. It makes sense for them to sell the OS rights to Netflix because the international marketing spend and theatrical release budget would have gone to waste or it would have been too risky without prospects of substantial reward.

This looks pretty awesome. Ex Machina was amazing.

Never been a hater of Portman the way a lot of people seem to be, either. With good material she's fine.

Alex Garland's #Annihilation is absolutely phenomenal. It's gorgeous and mesmerizing, with brilliant performances from the entire ensemble. It's a remarkable vision, and has a sequence so thrilling that I was left literally dizzy. It will be on my Top 10 of 2018 without question.

Alex Garland’s #Annihilation is another example of the kind of brainy sci-fi we don’t see enough of. Badass female cast and a story that’s both beautiful and wickedly disturbing, and an ending you will talk about for days. Dug it so much

The last scene was a big point of contention for the producers of this movie. David Ellison of Skydance (one of the producers) wanted to tweak it to make it more palatable to the general public. He also wanted to make Natalie's character more sympathetic in the movie.

I don't put a lot of faith in these early twitter reactions because they are almost always positive. I hope they are right though.

Im sure this will be great, but a "new Sci fi classic"?

Why are people nowadays so quick to call something a classic, iconic, or whatever. Why can't something just be good or great.

The below image from ANNIHILATION is only mere taste of audacious weirdness that Alex Garland's film offers. By final 15 minutes, I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing on-screen. @jeffvandermeer fans, and anyone looking for big-budget ideas-based sci-fi, will be thrilled

It's the most admirably out-there scene I've witnessed in some time. I'm so glad North American audiences will get to see it on the big screen.

Because Garland already did a modern sci fi classic with Ex Machina. :oldrazz:

Ex Machina is sublime.

Live interview with Garland going on right now. He will shoot another film by the end of the year. He called it a ''tech thriller'' set in San Francisco.

Garland seems annoyed by this lady doing the interview. He can't hide his facial feelings well. lol

Saw this last year, and i can confirm this film is as wonderfully strange as people are saying. Quite polarizing as well. I totally get why paramount was concerned about how the general audience would perceive it. I was sitting next to people who were incredibly confused by the end, certainly angry. I can't wait to see its final version.

I cannot believe Paramonunt released Clooney's recent garbage theatrically but not this

There is an 8 minute clip/extended preview available at the PlayStation Store. It's free to watch.

Its very very very graphic. If you want to know what the graphic gore is so you can decide whether you can stomach it open the spoiler tags.

Natalie Portman's character's team find a memory card and watch it. The video shows Oscar Isaacs' character and other people surrounding a man in a chair. The man in the chair says he is ready. Isaacs' character begins to cut open the man's torso and pulls the skin away. Inside the man's torso is what appears to be a semi translucent snake filling up his torso and writhing around.

It seems Area X has mutated the man's intestines and turned them into some sort of snake things.
