Annihilation - from Ex Machina writer/director Alex Garland

There is an 8 minute clip/extended preview available at the PlayStation Store. It's free to watch.

Its very very very graphic. If you want to know what the graphic gore is so you can decide whether you can stomach it open the spoiler tags.

Natalie Portman's character's team find a memory card and watch it. The video shows Oscar Isaacs' character and other people surrounding a man in a chair. The man in the chair says he is ready. Isaacs' character begins to cut open the man's torso and pulls the skin away. Inside the man's torso is what appears to be a semi translucent snake filling up his torso and writhing around.

It seems Area X has mutated the man's intestines and turned them into some sort of snake things.
Sounds rough.

The white washing thing with this is wayyyy overblown. Sweet lord. Some folks just want to feel offended over anything.

The whole situation is odd, and one that seems to be a legitimately an honest mistake considering when the film started production, when the books were published and how apparently the info is only in the second book.

The books weren't really spaced out. Garland just chose not to read the other ones.

Even so, its not as if the film has an all-white cast.

Garland also never read the other books and took a whole different route to the story. He did not have much contact with the author at all. I also feel like a dude married to a mexican woman would take this white washing issue serious, so I legit feel this is an honest mistake.

I know he wrote the script after the books were released, but wasn't the film already in production before the books were released, and thus they were probably already look for actresses to attach? Also, yeah, he didn't read the second book. Which makes sense considering what he was adapting.

The book's from 2014 so no, the film was not in production.

Garland said he didn't want to be attached to sequels, so he only took the first book and had no intention of doing another.

If someone is doing their own thing, with no intentions of being hampered by what comes after, that makes sense.

Except they bought the rights before the books were released. Which is common these days. A lot of the time they work off manuscripts. Do you think they just let it sit for 18 months before attaching Garland?

Garland is the writer. Doesn't seem like he was doing any writing before the books came out. Just seems like when he came on he was only interested in the first book. Likely was really just interested in the premise at that from the sounds of it.

I like that Garland was only interested in this story.
That means this movie isn't peppered with connections to the other books.
I have not read any of the books, good to know that I don't have to before I see this film.

The main character in the first book doesn't even have a name, let alone a race.

I saw a couple tweets pretty much saying it'll get an F on CinemaScore. :hehe: :mrk:

This sounds a colossal mind****.

I cannot wait.

Reviews are off the charts so far.
