I'm sitting in my crappy neighborhood Library right now. About 20 minutes ago a white cop walks up to me lightly taps me on the shoulder and asks me how old I am? It's becasue kids skip school I guess but it pissed me off. I'm 2 f**king 2 and don't really want to answer questions about how old I am because I'm a f**king adult who should be able to get on the damn 60 minute computer in peace. Several people have told me that I look young for my age (12 to 18) because I have a baby face "I guess" and I'm 5'1" but still that cop annoyed the hell out of me and he touched me? I mean he could have asked the annoying question without touching me right? Damn I wanted to kick that mo-fo in the nuts.

Technically, his putting his hands on you for no reason like that counts as assault. You should have gotten his badge number.

It was a very light touch but I hear what you are saying. I definitely should have told him not to touch me also.

Wether or not I saw him coming, the instant I felt a touch, I would have jumped up and yelled "DON'T TOUCH ME!!!"

Was your back to him? If so it could be considered a reasonable attempt at getting your attention. Really, his only other option would have been along the lines of saying "hey kid" or "hey you" and that might have technically been more offensive and garnered un warranted and embarrassing attention to you.

Agreed touching you is not the best way of doing things, but in the situation it may have been the simplest option, especially if it was just a tap on the shoulder. Anything rougher, like grabbing your shoulder would be grounds for a complaint.

Dick cop with nothing better to do. C'mon, if you were a kid skipping school, you're at the library, what better place than to skip school than to a library.

You should have just looked at his hand on your shoulder shrug it off and continue about your business

my adopted father used to touch me all the time......... he was also a cop.

Bah. I hate that kind of ****. If he didn't forcibly grab him or something and it was an obvious tap just to get his attention it's pretty stupid to charge him for assault IMO. The way the story sounds, it was just a cop asking how old he was and making sure he wasn't skipping school. He didn't throw him up against a wall and ask him if he was smoking "the dope" or anything. It actually sounds like the cop wasn't the guys main problem but that someone questioned his age.

So, I'm guessing you're black?

Try touching a cop in the same manner and see if they feel the same way. :oldrazz: At any rate, my brother is a cop and they train them specifically to NOT touch people unless there is a very, very good reason for doing so BECAUSE of lawsuits like that. I'm not saying it's right (because it's really overboard, I agree), but it is reality. My take is that cop was overstepping his boundaries by putting his hands on someone for no reason like that. It could be construed as assault or even sexual harassment.

at least he paid attention to you, unlike my father. I'd prance around the house in short shorts and pick up stuff in front of him and nothing, not even a glance. :csad:

Oh, I agree, that it shouldn't be done by a cop unless necessary for fear of a lawsuit, I was just ranting that a lawsuit in that case is annoying as hell to me.

Yes my back was to him and I understand that he was trying to get my attention but I don't like it when strangers touch me and I come to this Library almost everyday, (for the net access mostly) the staff knows that I come in here and give me nods and hello's. He could have asked them instead of assuming I was some punk kid. This is the first time this has happened to me and I've been coming for years now, I'm trying to figure out why?

Is it because I'm a younger looking than my age black female wearing a Batman beeny (is that what it's called?)

Yep.

Thats exactly what I think that it was. I'm not shocked or anything, just annoyed. Believe me, I've been followed in WAL-MART and semi expensive clothing stores. I dress very tom-boyish/causal most of the time and I'm not going to stop doing that because they think I'm going to steal something even though I've never even thought of the possibilty of stealing something.

You obviously, from what you've described, look very young for your age. Take it as a compliment. Do you get mad when you get carded for liquor too? I can understand that you might have been in a bad mood but I see no reason for you to be that upset about a tap on the shoulder.

Heres a  and a cookie for your detective work. Him being white is an important part of the story because honestly after living in ohio for 22 years I've learned that some white people are...gasp! racist a-holes. Then again I would have been just as annoyed if the cop was black.

I wasn't and I'm not in a bad mood.
