actually that's exactly right. the original phrase "Would ye both eat your cake and have your cake?" first appeared in a book of proverbs by John Heywood in 1546.

but what the heck is the point of "keeping" cake? Wouldn't it go bad? I assume that after a while even fruit cake goes bad...

"Due to the fact that..." - What's wrong with just saying "because"?

"In order to..." - You can use "to" and the meaning isn't lost.

I get a kick out of it. Sometimes I count off the number of times they stall with "um" during a presentation, highest ever was like, around 30.

its not necessarily an annoying saying, but i hate watching movies with someone, and we've both never seen it, yet the person is constantly asking "what's he/she doing? where they going? etc, etc."

i always say "let's find out together shall we?" and they usually get mad and don't ask anything for a while
