Hi all,

Just wondering if there were any other film makers here on the forum (not sure if this should go in fan film thread) but just thought be a good opportunity to have a place to discuss projects / possible creative link ups etc.

Mods, please feel free to move if required.

Look forward to hearing from other guys.

Cheers everyone,

Jim

Hey, producer/director/writer/editor (because these days low budget filmmaking is like a one man band) What genres are you into developing?

Heh, thanks for reply, to kick thread off as such.

Like yourself, am a multi-function film maker, writer, producer, director.

Had done some shorts and docs and completed first feature film in 2012 and starting to shoot sequel next year.

Am independent with various production partners around me and we work as one collective.

Genre wise, from my own work, the features will be a trilogy of work in the comic book genre, having written, devised and created own character and universe.

Working on other clients work, is varied and covers drama, docs mainly.

Thanks for responding... :yay:

I am also a aspiring filmmaker. The thing is I live in Virginia and there isn't much in the way of film production or any sort of broadcast production besides news and radio and its hard to get into either one of those here, because the same people hold positions for YEARS like 10-20 plus years. I have several short films scripts I have yet to shoot, due to lack of crew and people that are willing to stay commited. But mostly, I volunteer at the only film school in the area as a production assistant, grip, camera op or whatever.

I have interned at the Cannes Film Festival before and recently took a trip to Los Angeles. Last summer, I was a production assistant/ grip for a short film that stars Chad Coleman from AMC's The Walking Dead show (got to met him too). That's probably the biggest thing that I have done so far. Would love to connect with some filmmakers here on SHH!

I make private films with different women at various locals.

I too am a filmmakers. I'm currently working the final revisions to a feature film script, which I will be seeking funds for soon. I've also done some shorts, corporate videos, and live events. I actually did the Steeltown Film Factory event 2 years ago.

Hi SB, that was my aim with the thread, to give us all a platform to support, help, advise each other on all aspcts of film making, talk through our projects.

Good to see others wanting that too.

What editing software do you all use?

Yep, I'm a filmmaker as well. Director, writer, producer, editor and dp. Ive been doing shorts since my last year in high school. After My friends and i banded together to make Free Your Mind Films i got my drive back and we just shot two films, the last one 53 minutes long, with another in pre-production. Its difficult to make films on minimum wage, but it isn't impossible. All i know is that i love it. It's the best type of drug for me, being on a film set and directing others to accomplish your vision. It's an amazing feeling.

Agree whole heartedly with this, being on set is the best feeling on earth. Love my film making, gives me all I need, the creativity of being part of something that special.

I'd like to make a film with some of you guys.

:dew:

I have a degree in film from USC but have gone on to earn a PhD in a different field. I'm still a filmmaker at heart.

I use Adobe Premiere for my mini Youtube projects.

I use final cut pro 7. Friends of mine haven't been too kind to final cut x

Edius - it's used by industry broadcasters here in the UK and I used to edit my feature film, I know most packages' structure and presentation are much the same, I just found it with my editor, that is was more 'intuative' and physically more helpful to use, most packages seem (in my eyes anyway) to go out out there way to be difficult to access various tools or menus, where as I found with Edius it's very 'hands on' and user friendly. I'd reccomend it.

I used that at school for my filming project and it was great, but when I downloaded it at home it was just slow and took like two hours to render a few clips. So now looking for something else...
There's certain lofty system requirements necessary for Premiere to run smoothly, but it's still my package of choice. My computer doesn't meet these requirements either so it also takes forever for clips to render, but the results are worth the wait.

Yeah, don't use FCX, LOL! It is bad.

I've used FC, Premiere, and Avid. Wish I could afford Avid, LOL! That is a lovely system.

I've been using fcp7 since my first year in film school so for about eight years now. I can't see myself using anything else. I remember when i first got my laptop and i had tried to use imovie since i couldnt afford fcp7. I quit that in two seconds. Thinking of all these options reminds me of the side by side documentary and the segment where they showed old school film editing. Those guys were massively talented, but man i'm glad we do it through the computer. In general i'm very grateful for digital. If the dslr didn't exist, i don't know what would happen. Of course i love how film looks, but still, my camera saved me as far as i'm concerned.

Random Thoughts

1. No Film School is a terrific resource for filmmakers. Seriously, it's like the lottery for advice on everything and anything pertaining to filmmaking. Check it out. Seriously.
2. I have one film in the can - a licensed adaptation of King's "One for the Road." I met roadblock on the film adaptation of my novel; presently, I'm working on an original project.
3. DSLR's are awesome.
4. I like Adobe Premiere. A lot. Haven't used Final Cut in 8 years. iMovie's nice for school/leisure projects.
5. I also did a documentary on the problems facing a nearby rustbelt town. It's completed and on the web.
6. No Film School. Again. Check 'em out.

My sister published a film she created all on her own,(she even won an award; First Time Director). And as for myself I write screenplays and I am working on a novel.

I've been making small films since I was 13 and had my own black/white TYCO video cam (it had to be plugged into the VCR to record on VHS tape). Back in 2011, I told myself that I wanted to make a movie before I turned 30. It was 35 minutes long called "Killer Kabbage." I comissioned a fella downstate (I live in Michigan) to make the cabbage props and used a lot of old school 80s effect techniques. Lots of lessons learned (one of them being - don't expect your "actors" to show up when they have to if they aren't being paid, they'll show up when they feel like it) but it was a fun experience. It's on Amazon right now for viewing or purchase. This year, we sank $3k into new HD film equipment, and we got nice results. Made a new short called "Ghost Detectives" for our city's very first film festival, it's about a group of fake ghost hunters (who used to have a reality show but got canceled) that end up in a real haunted house and have no idea what to do. I used Adobe After Effects and Sony Vegas for editing, Sony Vegas seems to be crashing a lot and doesn't render completely (apparently that's a common problem now) so I switched to the cheaper "Movie Studio Platinum" with excellent results.

Here's the trailer for "Killer Kabbage"

And here's the trailer for our new flick "Ghost Detectives"

You can really tell the difference in quality between each trailer.

good to see there are other filmmakers on the hype :)

been making small films since i was 13
while it hasn't always been the easiest thing to do, i still have a passion for directing/writing, it can be an incredibly hard process when you have minimal funds or a lack of people willing to spend time helping out but it's not impossible

have had a lot of good and bad experiences but its still a good feeling knowing your film gets finished

for editing i really prefer adobe premiere 6 but i had to learn how to use final cut pro 7 at uni then they upgraded to proX which i haaaaaaaaaateeeee
