I can't stand him as an actor, and I especially can't stand him because of his private life. Say what you will, I will not be able to enjoy this movie because of Downey.

Anyone else feel the same way? I can't be the only one.

Crap. I accidentally answered no because of the thread title. I personally couldn't care less about what actors do in their private lives.

Muahahah... another is yeilded by my trap...

Robert's personal life has no effect on me going to see the film, Robert is a talented actor, and I'm looking forward to seeing his portrayal of Stark on the big screen, if someone doesn't want to see the film based off his personl life, it's not a big deal, there will be plenty of other people who will see the movie.

I reckon Downey Jr will bring alot to the role and it's not like he's a newcomer either. This guys a veteran with some great acting potential. He can play a variety of roles and perhaps some of his personal life may help with the role should they persue the demon in a bottle storyline at any point. I'm all for seeing how this turns out and I know how quickly bad casting can destroy a movie **cough CATWOMAN !**cough** anywhoo thats my 2 cents.

If I don't see it, it'll be because of a corny story/power rangerish suit/something else besides the actor's personal life. I'll probably see it though

I just saw a preview for some movie while waiting for James Bond to start and Robert Downey Jr. was in it.

Wow, the guy has the face of a baby *****ebag, a crappy voice, oozes of ****fulness... I can't watch Ironman now. Downey is a *****e *******.

Considering, baggage and all, he's one of the most talented actors of our time, he'll be fine. He's never lived up to his potential because of his problems, but he has talent and he'll bring something fresh to the role.

as will i lets se how mr downey pulls it off

I might not see this movie because of the actor choice,i dont think he can be a good Iron Man.

i hated the idea of ben affleck as dardevil.. but when i went to see it, he really pulled it off completely and perfectly.

so i will never doubt questionable casting again. unless its really outlandish like Bill Murray as stark or someone that doesnt have an image that can be obtained in order to pull it off.

Downey has this, he looks great for stark and im 100% positive he will pull it off and suprise most doubters.

I understand it is hard to enjoy talented actors they always ruin a movie. We need to put Arnold in some more stuff crappy acting is where it's at. :whatever:

Personal life shouldn't matter all that should matter is their ability to act. Lame

Well lets be fair it isn't alleged he did use drugs he has admitted to it.

This next part is for the people who don't like him because of his personal life.

Now I will say it is just plain sad to see someone refusing to watch a movie because some one used drugs in the past. First of all that's none of your business you should only be concerned with his ability to act. Second of all cut the guy a break people make mistakes. Third last, but certainly not least HE WENT TO REHAB that means he at least tried to stop. He may have even stopped by now it is possible that he does not use anymore. Since you don't know you really don't have any right to judge him.

Jesus, if you don't watch stuff because you don't like the actors life choices, you wouldn't be able to watch anything. Forget professional sports, while you're at it. And you couldn't really buy any clothes, because so many clothing items involve child labor, which you surely disapprove of. Oh, and close your bank account and cut up your credit card, because white collar financial crime is absolutely rampant.

I'm gonna watch the movie BECAUSE OF Robert Downey Jr.

I'm a big fan of his. He's a superb actor.

Same here.

RDJ is an absolutely incredible actor, with enough youthful energy to offset his "older" appearance. And he has far more to give to the role than some other actors we could have been stuck with.

As for his drug addiction:

Robert Downey Jr.’s addiction to drugs started with Marijuana when he was only 6 years old. He was surrounded by drugs, and that was the type of home he grew up in. By the age of 22 he had developed a serious drug problem. He went through his first rehab in 1987, and in 1996 was arrested three times on drug and weapons charges. For the next few years, Downey went in and out of prison and rehab. He continued to use Crack Cocaine and Heroin. Despite this he continued to act and even won an award on the TV series Ally McBeal all while living in a residential treatment facility. A few months later came another arrest for felony drug possession. Before this even came to trial he was arrested yet again. Despite being sober for over five years now, Robert Downey Jr. still gets stopped by police officers who think he might be under the influence.

If anybody thinks that qualifies as living the good life then they need to have their heads examined. Downey buried his clothes from Less Than Zero around 91 to try to get rid of the mojo and turn a page, so to speak. It took him another decade to actually be able to do it. And any time you beg a judge to be harsher with you because you simply cannot kick your habit with the lesser penalties they've been giving you...I'd have to say that says something.

The fact that Robert has been sober for several years (6 now?) is amazing given his history. He credits his marriage, his practicing of the martial arts, his therapists, his friends, his entire support network...and he's terribly grateful that he's been given this Iron Man opportunity. He's ALSO grateful that it will film in So Cal so he can stay near all the people and things that are keeping him sober and alive.

He's been rehabbing his whole adult life. He's the son of an addict - addiction is in his blood (yes, it really works that way). And it's taken him an awfully long time and a lot of pain to get on top of it.

I wish he'd been able to do what Drew Barrymore did - snort cocaine at 12, sober up by 20 - but that wasn't in the cards for him. He's an amazingly gifted actor that I thought would be dead by now of demons he was just unable to kick.

But he HAS kicked them, and will hopefully continue to kick them for the rest of his (hopefully long) life.

How long would you like to punish a man for what was done to him as a child? If he had been sexually molested for 15 years instead of forcibly drug-addicted (thanks RD Senior) would you feel differently about his various problems with drugs and the law since?

If you would feel differently, then I don't think you truly understand addiction.

The story of Iron Man is the story of a brilliant and gifted man who has to fight the good fight every day just to beat back his worse self and be a hero despite his inner, self-destructive nature. He was based on Howard Hughes, who wound up his days completely insane - he lost the battle.

But Robert is winning his, and fighting the good fight, as every hero should. Why is that anything to hate on or be ashamed to support? RDJ's story IS Tony Stark's story.
If you can cheer on the alcoholic, philandering, self-defeating Tony Stark and view him as someone whose troubles do not surmount his gifts, then I would surely hope you could support Robert's fight to defeat the same obstacles, especially as he's half-a-decade removed from being on the losing side of those obstacles.

If Iron Man fans can't do that...*shrugs*

I would hope of all fandom we would be the most sympathetic to him as our leading man.

Of course, if you just object to him because he can play it a little flame-y when it's called for, then I completely understand your fear, and would just tell you that the man is an amazing actor and the great thing about amazing actors is that they can play more than one role. :)

well, I can understand the thread starter's feelings.

I'll admit that I sometimes refuse to watch a movie or project that involves a particular director or actor ( actress ). In my case, I'm more conservative in my views, so if a particular celebrity is extremely liberal ( and makes really outlandish remarks ), or else does something extremely sordid or offensive in behaviour, then I will usually "boycott" that celebrity's movies.

In Downey Jr.'s case, though, it seems that he has actually cleaned up his life. I think that will bring an interesting dimension to his portrayal of Stark, as he has something in common with the character. Plus, Downey is not the typical tall, buff, male hero that is usually cast in the male hero role. I find that refreshing, as I am short in stature.

So, for me, Downey's past personal life will not affect my seeing Iron Man.

However, if one just can't stand him as an actor, then I certainly understand. There's no point in spending your money watching someone you can't stand............

If anything I'll see it BECAUSE he's Iron Man.
