Hi everyone, I'm just wondering, does anyone here read the Sonic the Hedgehog comics that Archie puts out? I've been reading them for years, and love them. In my opinion they hit their peak about 10 years ago, around issue 50, but they've recently gotten a new head writer and it seems things might be going back up. Does anyone else here read these?

I did for a awhile. About 6 issues. I read only because I need a comic that wasn't so depressing. The big 2 keep making everything so depressing. But I dropped the comic now. I had to drop something so I dropped it. It was nice. Has some of the best cover art.

ever try Invincible, Deathshead? Maybe Marvel Adventures?

I read the Archie Sonic comic for years (it was actually what got me into reading comics), pretty much throughout junior high, then I outgrew it. I still pick up the occasional one for nostalgia's sake, and for a kid's comic, it's still rather impressive.

The cover art is always extremely good, and the characters themselves are usually really well-written (the ones that have been there from the start, anyway, not so much for the ones that were shoe-horned in because Sega keeps putting out more crappy games) Some of the bigger stories had some really cool moments in them, like one where Sonic "dies" in a way that almost perfectly parallels Barry Allen's death in COIE.

Anyway, yeah, I always liked the comic, and I'm probably going to start reading them again once the SatAM cartoons come out on DVD.

Yeah, that was a good story. And yeah, I love the cover art. I can't wait for the DVD's to come out, I think they're coming in March.

I never read the comic, but I enjoy the cartoon in TV and also the game.
I think the Game is the most successful product for Sonic than the comic.

um, er, eh, a, ee....

well yeah, duh. The game has sold tens of millions of units, the comic only sells tens of thousands

I wasn't aware that the comic was selling that well.

Do you know how many per issue?

That is per issue. I have no idea exactly what the numbers are, but MOST monthly comics sell in the tens of thousands these days

super-mega events like Civil War get up to 200,000 copies a month, and the top ten sell about 100,000 a month, but most everything else is in the five digits. Comics that sell less than 10,000 are usually independent books with low overhead (black and white, low grade paper).

it doesn't. MOST comics sell in the tens of thousands

Marvel does light comics. As E said try Marvel Adventures or Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane.

I was pretty into these for a while. I'm pretty sure they got me into comics.

I outgrew them somewhere around the 100-issue mark...I can't remember, but I want to say I stopped around #110 or #115.

I still have a good portion of the issues (as well as most of the 32-issue run for Knuckles). I haven't picked up an issue in a very long time, but every time I see a new issue on the stands I have to stop and flip through it.

I read a few issues last year (the plot had something to do with some evil verison of one of the characters marrying Sally...).

I liked it, the anime look was nice too, but I didn't stick with it long...I was hoping to find graphic novels so I could play catch up...

This thread kinda sparked my interest, so I picked up the last issue to see what all's going on. It's sorta hard to keep up with the tons of new characters they've added in since I quit reading (which was, like, 8 years ago), and I'm kinda annoyed that the SatAM characters like Sally have been pushed to the back-burner, but it's more or less the same as I remember. Same artists and everything (or similar ones at least).

Also noticed they're releasing some of the original comics in TPBs now.

Yeah i've tried invincible I have the first 3 trades, and the store I got to has all the other except for 4. So I have to wait for that. Now Marvel Adventures yeah I have some of the early spider-mans when it came out but the storys were a little to kiddie for even my taste.

Yeah, some of the classic characters aren't the focus anymore, but they have a new writer now and I think he's trying to bring them back. And the old ones in TPB is fairly new, I think. I need to get those.

Man, I can't speak highly enough about this series. This is what REALLY got me into comics. I wouldn't have touched the stuff if it hadn't been for that golden era between #s 25 and 50... with Knuckles' series (around 18 issues, I think) I was introduced to the concept of getting multiple comics every week (something I actually wouldn't have thought of on my own), and from there, it was GenX, Young Justice and a golden world of superpowers (or two).

That said, the Princess Sally cast is so awesome, I don't have any idea why they aren't using this for the videogame... I miss the badass Knuckles who couldn't be any more condescending to Sonic without becoming a parody of himself or something... it was great stuff.

I haven't picked up the new ones... the new concepts seemed like a turnoff to me, but I'll perhaps pick up things to see if the greatest all ages comic of all time can get some shine time.

For a while in the 90s, they were going to be. Sally, Bunnie, and Rotor show up as hidden Easter-eggs in Sonic Spinball, and the cancelled 'Sonic Extreme' game for the Saturn was rumored to use those characters. I know this because I have no life.

But yeah, the SatAM/early Archie cast beat the crap out of the characters they use in the new games. Actually having personalities probably helped.
