Was there anything in Raimi's trilogy that you hoped/expected to be taken further that wasn't?

Example:

I always figured Quest, the rival company to Oscorp in the first film would reappear down the line; especially in a world with so much dangerous tech.

I always though John Jameson would have something to do with SM3.

Buuut noooo... they thought "It came from outer space" was enough.

:oldrazz:

It's a shame that the John Jameson character never went anywhere. He had a good reason to have a grudge against Peter and MJ at the end Spidey 2. That look on his face after he found out MJ stood him up at their own wedding said it all. I wonder if JJJ knew or not if Peter was dating his son's fiancee in the Spidey 3. That would probably be the first valid reason for him to fire Peter.

That's a good one. Funnily enough, I don't think I ever considered it until it came up here, but it does seem odd to abandon John after 2.

I was expecting a followup with the Lizard in the Raimi movies.

Yeah I can't believe he wasn't even the top pick for SM4. Raimi was fixated with Vulture lol

Yeah, oh well. I think it would have come eventually, if there was a fifth Maguire film. The Billy Dee Williams of the Raimi-verse.

I thought that may new that parker was spiderman and that peter would find out that may nows or something has they really hinted that she new.

I've always wished for something like that to happen. JJ. could have been extra hard on Peter for being with MJ. Then, when Peter gets the black suit he could actually go to Jameson and threaten him(like in the 90's series). That,in turn would've given JJ extra motivation to hate Spider-man and discredit him in the papers.

Like most,I wanted to see Dr. Conners become the Lizard at some point.:liz:

I'd have been happy to see John Jameson become the Man-Wolf as a supporting villain in a film.

I always wished they'd have done more with Flash after High School.

Aside from Dr. Connors, nothing comes to mind.

The Raimi movies really weren't framed as an episodic franchise. The timeline of the first film coupled with the iconic imagery lifted from Raimi's favorite comics are a testament to that I think. Each story did its best to stay self-contained.

I don't know about anyone else, but I appreciated the sense of restraint these movies had. By that I mean that they didn't feel the need to shove a million different characters, references and easter eggs in a vain attempt at world building (eg. John Jameson didn't become the Man-Wolf, Connors wasn't foreshadowed as being the lizard, etc.) Really, I blame the studio attempting to ride on the Marvel Studios coattails for what the TASM series has become.

You're definitely not alone.

The thing is, as you just outlined, the easter eggs were there, but IMO, they were done with better intentions back then, as a nod to the fans out there in the audience. I liked that the Raimi movies felt like self-contained stories that were still just chapters in Spider-Man's life, but not so strictly beholden to what came before or after. This can work ala Star Wars and LotR when the overarching narrative is properly planned out, but with TASM 2, I think it's crystal clear that this isn't what's happening here.

I've noticed that in these new movies, seemingly every easter egg is some sort of franchise building contrivance.

College, The Bugle, Jameson, Felicia, Menken (I guess?), Smythe, the Oscorp basement armory, Ravencroft, Kafka, and so on and so forth. Problem is, the second movie has essentially proven that Webb is incapable of weaving through these extended plot threads with any sort of grace or competence, so I'm very worried about what the future holds.

I wonder what Raimi would have done with Gwen in SM4?

I always figured Quest, the rival company to Oscorp in the first film would reappear down the line; especially in a world with so much dangerous tech.

Reading the SM3 novelisation again, the facility that inadvertantly creates Sandman is actually Quest. They've taken to using remote facilities and late-night experiments in the wake of Goblin's attack in SM1, as they're afraid of spies and sabotage.

I feel odd quoting myself lol, but I thought that was interesting. Should have been included in the film.

I would gladly let Bryce Gwen die in a film.

Also, I was expecting more from Connors too.

I will echo those who have mentioned the Lizard. I would've really liked to see Clive Barker ascend to more than a cameo and be the villain.

I really thought we would get the lizard in the original trilogy

I really thought we would get somewhere with Dr. Connors in SM3, obviously that didn't happen.. The JJ story from SM2 was something I thought would continue through as well, maybe with JJJ also giving Peter a tough time about it.

I really wish Raimi had done the Lizard. He was one of my favorite villains growing up, and he set it up nicely. Dylan Baker was more likable than whatshisname, and I know Raimi could have made him visually cool looking unlike what we ended up getting.

I also would have liked to have seen Raimi carry Peter and MJ into marriage, but obviously not in the first three movies. Oh well.
