Aquaman's Critical Reception Thread (Rotten Tomato and Metacritic)

Do you think Critics are being too harsh on Aquaman? Do you agree with some?

I heard at some point Wan said that he intended Aquaman to has adventure movie feels.
Love adventure focused movie like The Mummy, National Treasure etc but many of those not have critical love that much (except notably Indiana Jones series).
Heck, The Adventures of Tintin is great adventure movie with Spielberg and Jackson names attached to it and still has 75% RT.

Sometimes I do feel that critics demanded many things. More character arc, more character development, more depths, more motivations, more twist, more political or eco or deep messages, more emotional scenes but I just wanted to enjoy the journey. :D I want thrills, myths, set pieces, locations, action and character interactions, with story that serves the journey, from an adventure movie.

I think at the end it'll still fresh. Just enough to entice many of RT score oriented moviegoers. But WoM is great so far, the movie is trending, so I don't think it means much.
 
I’m pretty sure I’ll still be seeing this OW.

I think people misunderstood this I am saying the critic score is good for the most part we just wanted the score to be higher. I just want to clear that up! I did not see the movie yet!
 
I guess we dont care much at this point but I feel obliged to keep everyone updated.

I find Aquaman quite resilient now, staying at 70 after 114 reviews. Goes to show it will stick around this mark fairly likely.

Average RT rating 47.2% Top Critics 41.8%

The closest rating being Wonder Woman which was within 1%, the furthest being Justice League which was 16% apart.

Right now Aquaman is 70% with a Top Critic score of 50% giving it the biggest gap between regular and top critics in the DCeU. Very curious to see where this top critic score goes. The sample size is small at 14 reviews, but there has only ever been 45-54 top critic reviews for a DCeU film so it's about a third of the way there.

318 being the lowest number of total reviews and 409 being the most in the DCeU, I'd say the 70% RT rating right now could very different by the time it's all said and done. Anywhere from 60% to 85%, math to follow.

Assuming it finishes with 364 reviews (which would be splitting it down the middle) Aquaman still has about 249 reviews still coming in. If every single one of those reviews were fresh, it would max out at a 91% rating (330/364) which is obviously an unlikely best case scenario. But just to put it into perspective, if 85% of the 249 remaining reviews are positive the score would be 293/364 bringing it to an 80% (almost 81) final score.

On the flip side, let's take 15% off instead of adding it to the next 249 reviews... Which I would consider a worst case scenario. That would come out to 218/364 bringing the movie to a 60% final score.

We're only about 32% of the way with the reviews, it's going to be a long ride.

Seems like it. Bumped back to 71% on 116 reviews atm.
 
Even Newsarama gave it a bad review...yikes.

Not that it matters to me anymore since I've seen the film and loved it so I'm not really sure what some reviewers arent seeing in it.

I was surprised Collider group gave it a negative review. I don't get it either honestly, but hey man, like you said, it doesn't really matter at the end of the day. I think the GA is going to eat this up.
 
I'm honestly very curious to learn more about what in this movie was so offensive that it drove some people and critics to hate it and not be the least bit moved by its sheer visceral fun. This just.....FEELS designed to make you happy.

Very few of the negative reviews outright hate the film. Most of them liked things about the film, just not enough to recommend it.

Grace Randolph for once has a point and trashed AMPAS over this and James Wan liked it lol

I see a lot of backlash for this decision all over the place, hell even people who think Aquaman in general looks like trash, quality wise, and have no interest in seeing it think it should be nominated for effects

I'm afraid that not all of the Academy voters attended the screening or they already voted beforehand.
Aquaman's Oscar campaign a bit late, I think. Usually movie could started a campaign up to months earlier than WB's for Aquaman.
I'm disappointed, because out of all nominations, VFX is one category that I could see Aquaman has a change to proceed.

One thing is to compare bad CGI with good CGI. In all fairness if the comparison is to be taken seriously then one has to compare the good with the good and the bad with the bad. Infinity War had absolutely breathtaking CGI with Thanos motion capture being one of the big highlights. IW also had some duds like that Hulkbuster shot... But not too many if i remember correctly.

I haven't seen Aquaman but i have also heard that some of the CGI is indeed amazing but a decent amount is also really bad.

Just ask yourself if Aquaman was MCU would it be nominated. There is only one answer to that question especially when you consider they chose Christopher Robin over Paddington 2
