The Wolverine "Are These All The Reviews You Brought?" -The Official Review Thread

It actually felt like a rated R movie. And I believe there were a couple of violent scenes that showed blood.

I was shocked by how bold and risky Mangold, Hugh, and Fox were during the first 2 acts. The final act: generic pg13 summer superhero movie.

It could have beaten TDk and Avengers for me if it had a 3rd act as good as 2/3 of the movie. But it has to settle for number 3 in my list, and gets an 8.5/10. But there is still hope for a sequel.

I hope Mangold comes back and have more faith in his approach.

Wow...X3 actually got 65%?

I think that's appropriate. It can be a guilty pleasure of mine from time to time. To me, it's not terrible, it's just not that great and it follows the much better X2. I feel the same way about SM3. I never thought it was terrible, it just wasn't great and that's not good enough when you're following something like SM2.

StarDem REVIEW -
“The Wolverine” (mostly) rights the ship by telling a pared-down, character-driven story that makes no reference to the events of the earlier movies other than the title character’s guilt over having to kill his beloved Jean Grey in “X-Men: The Last Stand” (2006). Director James Mangold (“Walk the Line,” “3:10 to Yuma”), working from a screenplay by Mark Bomback, Scott Frank and Christopher McQuarrie, infuses the movie with a meaner, grittier tone than anything we’ve seen previously in the X-Men universe.

Well even so, the action in the third act is much greater than anything in the entirety of origins. Wolverine is a comic book character after all.

After living with the grounded realistic batman for years.. I wonder how critics will react to snyders fantastical comic book batman. How dare batman fight giant robots lol, yet he has for decades in comics. Same goes with wolverine!

Chicago tribune gave it a fresh review. Good to know since I know some people that trust that rating from that newspaper.

Also most critics seems to have wanted Wolverine to end in a James Bond kind of way, and they hate that It turned into just a comic book movie at the end.

53 to 22 on RT for a 70%

14 to 8 for top Critics for a 65%

Looking good... so far

Peter Travers - 2.5/4

It could have been worse. Exhibit A: the crapfest that was 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. But Hugh Jackman, in his sixth time up as Wolverine, still has the juice. This pissed-off man of Adamantium claws is stalking new ground (Japan), and his fight with yakuza on top of Tokyo's speeding bullet train is a wowser. It helps that Wolfie loses his powers and shows a human side, that he makes like James Bond in You Only Live Twice, and that he makes out with the lovely Mariko (Tao Okamoto). Sticking to Chris Claremont and Frank Miller's Marvel Comics blueprint, director James Mangold (Walk the Line) shows style and snap. Then, in the final third, he lets the movie sink in CGI s---. Wolfie deserves better. So do we.

Travers loves these kinds of movies. Haha.

I think this film has taken everyone by surprise, its just so different to any comic book movie before, its not your usual CGI heavy scrapfest with cheeseball one liners and thus very hard to rate properly.

I need a second viewing before I can make my own mind up!!

Nice last line:

Yet none of the chaos drowns out what amounts to Jackman's emotive miracle under these popcorn conditions, an acting gem that's unexpected and true. If comic book movies are the last place you look for a soulful, serious performance, The Wolverine should be your first.

I agree with that. One of my issues in Origins was that Wolverine came off as almost too polite. His Wolverine this time swears, beats the crap out of people and doesn't have patience for anyone's garbage. I loved it.

He also hates being forced to take a bath. :funny:

And,

I also loved how he dealt with losing the healing factor. It was like he had no idea how process how being in pain felt, and it weakened him as much as the physical injuries did.

But He [BLACKOUT]still hates flying though! I love the last scene where he's back on a plane lol. Its touching in a way.[/BLACKOUT]

This is definitely the case here. Apparently Origin generated so many ill will towards this character that most expected this movie to be dead on arrival.

The fact that, judging by the reviews so far, that this is a very well made movie just caught alot of people off guard.I think that if origin was never made in the first place, and this is Wolvie first outing, the reception would be quite different....more favourable .

100% yes, also its very different to other Marvel/Xmen films, plus pretty much the exact opposite of Origins so the two combined is making people unsure exactly what to make of it all.

I still cant myself, I am looking forward to having a second viewing that should help.

Gawd, rewatching Origins yesterday it's bothersome at the beginning when the movie is really highlighting Stryker's team and Wolvie is just along for the ride. He doesn't even get a good moment until he decides to bail on them. And Victor was such a cipher I still I don't understand him.

Jeremy Jahns approves. He gave it the "Blu Ray" rating.

Wow the last time I looked it was in the mid to high 70% now mid 60%.

I guess this one is really going to divide opinion it seems. Glad I'm in the happy camp!!

Well the OFFICAL word is out with critics

"MIXED REVIEWS"
