The Amazing Spider-Man Are they going to force the romance plot down our throats...again?

Kirsten was annoying and MJ was poorly written. I say both are to blame.

The general consensus was that she was fine in SM1 and SM2 and too whiny/needy in SM3. The end.
Compare MJ from SM2 to her counterpart in the Kingpin episode from the MTV Spider-Man series (the one released between the two movies)
In the cartoon: MJ was annoyed that Pete promised her to see her play but didn't, she gave him 2 more chances then finally said: "If you don't want to see my play you don't have to", but didn't hate him for that
SM2: "He didn't appear in my play as he promised, the jerk, I hate him, he can go f*** himself for all I care"
Then she told powerless Peter after he saw her play: "You're a troll"

She's whiney & needy in that movie too, finer in that aspect in SM1

I'd have put it more like 'Kirsten was miscast and MJ was poorly written & annoying.'

I don't hold any grudge against Dunst.

Would you not be pissed if one of your good friends promised to be at an event you were proud to be part of and they never showed up:huh: Twice:huh: What about a girl that had conflicting emotions about her love for you? Stand up a girl that you like twice and see if she says "**** you" or "oh it's ok Tiger, third time's the charm". Come on.

A reasonable person(and only mildly reasonable at that) would still have given the other party at least the chance to explain.

not if its a reoccurring theme with that friend. I myself had a friend who was the same way - they were terrible at returning calls, say they would meet up/hang out/go see my band play, etc, but time and time again, they would bail without even an explanation. Saying you'll go and do something, then don't is pretty much lying to the other persons face, which does not equate to being a good friend, nor someone whom you should give a chance to explain their actions for the 1000th time they've done something like that.

They never established that in the films though. All Peter ever said ONCE was that he was planning on coming to see her play(she didn't even ask this. He just volunteered it.) and then she immediately goes to the whole 'Don't disappoint me' bit. Umm...self-centered much, your highness?

Eh, I'd say Rachel Dawes is worse but MJ is a close second.

I would say they are about equally annoying. Thank God that Joker killed her. I wouldn't stand another movie with her.

While she didn't destroy the series with her annoying appearance, Joker did us a favour killing her. I just wish our pal Green Goblin would do the same for us with MJ.

You noticed the difference?
The cartoon, she got ticked, it's natural, and it isn't movie canon, and he lost his shot 3 times
The movie she was dating another guy, and went over the top "I hate you jerk" for not showing up once, once? And in a party a few days later she looks at him "jerk". The rule "to forget and to forgive" left her ration?

MJ said something along the lines of typical Peter Parker or you always do this...meaning he commits to something and then Spider-Man gets in the way and he backs out and comes up with excuses. It was even shown with his school work.

It was explained in the movie and the entire theme of SM2 was about balancing being Spider-Man and Peter Parker and that it was difficult to do but it was the right thing to do.

It only got annoying in SM3 when the movie was almost as much about her as it was Peter...which was a dumb script mistake.

Movie MJ seemed to have a high sense of entitlement, she never seemed happy. Did the writers really want her to appear like that? What redeeming qualities did she have? E.g 'Come to my play!', 'Kiss Me!', 'Do you love me?', 'Jerk!'. Peter deserved better.

Lets list the pros and cons of MJ

Pros

She was sweet (at times)
She was very pretty (Dunst may not be stunning, but I bet none of us would say 'no' if she offered)
She at least in some parts makes you feel like you're the only man on earth.
Even when she had problems, she tried her best to keep a smile for you (at the parade scene)

Cons

She was a cocktease.
She was very quick tempered.
She kissed another guy.
She makes you feel like crap very badly.
She could NOT make her mind up about who she wants to sleep with.

If I recall correctly, they suggest that this sort of thing has happened before. Never mind the fact that in the comics, this is a FUNDAMENTAL consequence to Peter being Spider-Man: people being mad at him/thinking less of his for "not being there" or "running off". And here, we get a simplified showcase of that, and people are complaining.

I agree with y'all who say Kirsten Dunst wasn't a good MJ. She always seemed pretty self-centered.

Meanwhile, knowing how the producers have described the new script - that's to say, "gritty" and "urban" - I doubt we'll have the romance plot shoved down our throats. I found the romance pretty bad in the Raimi movies, and in fact I read somewhere that Raimi's original plan for the third movie had included wrapping up the Maryjane subplot. I also read somewhere that Sam Raimi originally intended to have a random woman, not Gwen, in the third movie.

Too simplified if you ask me. And it comes at the expense of MJ's character being likeable anymore since now she just comes off as a b****.

Woo Hoo. Let the testosterone-fest continue.

Like the guy said before, have any of you ever actually had a real, interpersonal relationship with a female? 'cause it sounds like everything you're saying here is a regurgitation of every bad over the top, insecure male, misogynist cliche from the past 60 years. I'm not saying that I thought MJ was written particularly well, but most of the these posts smack of fanboy ignorance and naivete. Go figure.

Also-
You have absolutely zero credibility trying to talk about how well developed or meaningful a character (female or otherwise) is written or acted with that avatar. Too simplified, indeed. 'Cause you guys are obviously operating on a level above everyone else.:whatever:

Those cons listed are typical, especially with the girl I'm dealing with now, which kinda blows. So I definitely see it.

However I think it comes down to more that the love angle was the utter and main focus and when you have MJ be kinda of a less then stellar ideal woman, which does exist, it's kinda a kick in the nuts.

Perhaps that's what some fans are trying to vent.

I just hate other things, among many of the Raimi series, of which why even bother get into it.

Well let me get into actually, personally, I would have rather seen a more focus on other things, with MJ not being such a pain, and actually supporting Peter? You know, like, let's have some more depth besides MJ's insecurities?

Again, the debate could go on for ions....

My last girlfriend was like Mj...Bad tempered...a cheat...:csad:

Oh well,:hehe:

Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, that I've got not problem with...what I am getting at is the ignorant, sexist and uninformed way it's being voiced. I'm not getting all feministy here, but when you blatantly ignore plot points (that you may or may not have cared for-that part is irrelevant) and lazily use words like "c*cktease", etc...to describe a character, when that clearly wasn't the case if you followed the story at all. This type of macho-bravura posturing has become widely accepted and I have absolutely no problem calling someone out on it.

So the problem isn't what they're saying, but rather how they're saying it.

As I've said before, if Webb's first film 500 days of summer is any indication of how Peter and Gwen will interact in this new film, then I will be absolutely happy. I'm not talking gritty realism here, but more drama and less melodrama.

Yeah, so I guess in your world being a female = license to be a needy jerk of a character. Way to stand up for women.:whatever:

ARE YOU ****ING SERIOUS? You're using THIS as an arguement? [Raises hand]"Waiter..check please!"

Why did I waste time responding to you in the first place? Oh yeah, because you were responding to me. Then why the hell did you respond to me if you were just going to hang it all on one of the most idiotic arguements I've seen...well, all day(hey this is the Hype and I can't say your's stands out too much around here.....worst of the day is about the best I can award ya)? Anyway, come back with a real arguement or don't bother at all.

I just want the romance to be well-written and convincing. I'm very interested in the love interests in Spider-Man. MJ, Gwen - and if it's done well in this film, and let's say in the next film Gwen is killed, I'd the happiest moviegoer.

I saw Emma Stone in Easy A; didn't care so much for the film itself but I admired her performance. Andrew Garfield was fantastic in The Social Network, no one can deny that. Increasingly looking forward to screen chemistry between these two. Oh, and hey, why all the comparisons to Twilight? If the parts are being well acted, it's already worlds apart from that franchise.

I don't know why you're wasting your time replying to me either, 'cause you obviously didn't even read what I wrote...and if you did read it,then you really didn't understand it. Way to go, homie. Waste of time indeed. You obviously understand things on a very superficial level. Stick to browsing images of "your dream": photoshopped, big-boobed, blondes. LOL.

I challenge you to name me what you consider a "strong" or "well written" female character.

I think this could be an interesting dialogue.
