Just wondering if anyone else encountered this little scripted event in LoZ: Link's Awakening on the ol' GB.
Okay, so there's a shop in the village, right? You go in, and whatever item you choose off the shelf Link holds over his head and you're supposed to bring it to the clerk. BUT, did you ever try to just make a break for the door? The game will stop you at the door, and the clerk says something like, Hey! You've got to pay for that! No one steals from me! or something to that effect.
At least, that's what usually happens. However, keep trying to steal, and eventually the game lets you do it! You exit the shop, and once outside a dialogue box appears that says Well, you did it. Do you feel good about yourself? (I'm paraphrasing from memory here, so the exact wording is probably different.)
So, you think, OK, that was weird. Then, you go to save your game, or talk to someone that uses your inputed name and
: your file (and therefore Link's name) has been changed to THIEF in all caps! Can't change it back!
Now the kicker - just try going back to that shop. You walk in, and the clerk has abandoned his post at the register. He's waiting for you in the middle of the screen. I warned you, says he. Now'll you'll pay the ultimate price! And the lil' dude zaps you with a crazy display of magic that KILLS YOU! You can't run, dodge, attack or otherwise! You just sit there spinning in his beam of death until your heart containers run out.
After this, you can utilize his shop once more, but you remain branded a THIEF for the rest of the game.
I swear, I am not wasting your time with tomfoolery, nor do I think today is April 1st. This is a real secret in the game, and its got to be the most elaborate and strange Easter Egg on any cartridge.
Has anyone here experienced this? Did it get included on the DX version for GBC? It just came back to me recently, so I thought I'd dust off the subject and post it.
-- END!
