Ari Aster's Midsommar (2019)

Probably just a coincidence, but still:

A bunch of crazy white folks running around and a random brotha in there. My mans better get out!

I'll read the script later.

I'm sure this will be a very normal, not at all emotionally scarring film.

Oh it's the guy from The Good Place!

And yeah, that is definitely the look of a man who knows he's ****ed.

Probably the film I'm most excited to see this year, aside from potentially Robert Eggers' The Lighthouse. This trailer looks insane.

Well, this had a whole lot more humor than I was anticipating or some of them lines were just funny to me, I don't know if that is on purpose or not. This will depend on Florence Pugh being the mvp, and I have no reason to doubt she won't deliver, especially the last scene. This has a better ending than Hereditary imo. This has a lot of Wicker Man plot tho, that isn't a bad thing, but some of this stuff we've all seen before. This would be redflags for any black character tho! Ya'll know what I damn mean. I also got some Suspiria vibes. I like the over all story a lot more here than Hereditary, but can't say this is better, but still pretty good.

I decided to read the first 20 pages (not going to read any more) and your assessment seems on point. Seems like pretty standard genre fare--much moreso than Hereditary before the horror tropes took that one over--but it's entertaining/engaging enough. Aster's descriptions are cool, you can tell he's more of a visual thinker than dialogue writer, and just as something really cool started to happen I decided to stop reading.

And though I didn't get official confirmation it definitely seems like Chidi ain't long for this world.

Loved Hereditary. Should I read the script or wait until I can see it on opening day?

As long as it's better than Hereditary, this should be good.

Oh yes. HELL YES. This looks amazing. Loved Hereditary and this looks great two.

Also, Florence Pugh is really getting around! I remember like, a year ago, all I knew her from was that "Leading Lady Parts" Funny or Die video and now she's everywhere. Not complaining though; she's super talented and gorgeous.

Read most of the script last night and I hope the execution is better than what's on the page--especially when it comes to character decisions and dialogue. But I think my biggest pet peeve was the ending. Again, I hope this 2017 script was an early draft and Ari learned from the success of Hereditary to not follow conventional horror tropes.

I definitely got some Suspiria vibes too, but the overall story doesn't seem to have the depth that Hereditary brought. But again, this could come across very differently on screen.
