Twenty-one year-old Victoria Rogers says she wishes she could change the past.
The local mother has been a fugitive since January -- wanted by authorities in Killeen, Texas.
"I apologized and said I didn't mean to," Rogers said.
Out of fear of being picked up for her outstanding warrant, Rogers says she refuses to drive or apply for a job.
If only she had returned that library book to the Killeen Public Library, this would not be an issue.
"I was floored,” Rogers said. “I couldn't believe a warrant for a library book."
During an ugly divorce, Rogers and her 5-month-old son left Killeen and headed south to San Antonio, leaving behind a rocky relationship and a library book.
With so much else on her mind, Rogers says she forgot about the book. She says her ex-husband never told her about the notices in the mail.
She says she has offered to pay for the book, but the city of Killeen says it’s too late. A library worker says that once they send multiple notices and turn over a case to the city, it's out of their hands.
An arrest warrant has been issued. In Killeen, failure to return library materials is a class C misdemeanor.
Killeen city prosecutor Holli Clements says that usually in these kinds of cases, some kind of agreement can be reached, but the city still does treat it as a crime based on the city ordinance.
Rogers must show-up to court and pay a $340 fine. That's a steep price to pay, this mother says, for an overdue book.

All that for a ****in' library book? Don't cops and courts have better things to do? Like catching murderers, rapists, pedophiles, etc.

Well, they have even better things to do than that: Waste tax dollars. :whatever:

It might seem excessive but theft is still illegal and you don't just "Get away" with it by paying off what you stole.

At some point in time they just have to let her return the book back and pay a book fine, but $340 is way too steep. They should just put it back in the library's hands.

Little know fact: The library is actually ran by the Mob.

Sweet, sweet justice. That b**ch should be off the streets.

Jerry Seinfeld kept a book for 20 years and never got a warrant. These library cops are becoming even more insane.

Video/DVD rental places do that all the time. They ask you to pay the price of the dvd and the late fee charges.

Give her the electric chair...that will teach 'em.

I think it's that new website that has informative and leisurely reading material in it.

True and private institutions can do that if they see fit, but they can also legally press charges. The library in this case is a public library that probably is partially run by the city or town.

Yes, the city was going bankrupt over losing a $25 book (estimated, how much can a book cost seriously?),

Might have been one of those big coffee table books with nice, big pictures. Those are expensive.

Cant say I've ever had an overdue library book... I have stole on from my cousin's house though.

Oh, ****, the cops are gonna come for me now!

if libraries worked like netflixs this wouldn't be a problem.

If libraries hired hot librarians then this wouldn't be a problem.

Their website got shut down because they exceeded their bandwidth.

I always miss out on everything when it's cool, I missed the myspace craze, I missed the guitar hero craze, I missed the having sex with your teacher craze, now I missed the library craze.

this is bull ****

Ride with me, we'll travel to this new town called, "I eat chocolate dipped fawns for breakfast".

I digress... the ex is a *****e for not letting her know that she was going to go to jail for not returning the first printed bible in existence.
