This is like a versus thread. Except the artist gets pitted against himself in a no holds bar debate on whether he/she was better then or now.

Ready (comments welcome, reasons why you choose welcome)

OTHER POSTERS MAY POST THEN NOW ARTISTS.
However please try to let ample time for one artist at a time.

Chris Bachalo

I haven't really seen his new stuff but by judging those to pics I think he might of gotten better.

I like Bachalo's work from then. It seems there is more going on in his current work in comics, although I don't like it.

I dont know much about his work but by judging the 2 pics I would say I like the then his Phoenix is much fuller and more definded. But thats what I think.:)

I'm with the then Bachalo.

I tend to find his stuff now too busy and messy.

I hate Bachalo period, but judging just by the pics, then was a lot better.

Then: He used to have his own somewhat unique style (especially doing X-Men, Spider-Man and Iron Man)...now he is just a Kirby clone.

Now, his work on Eternals (which you should post) is easily his best work ever.

Now.

His line work is a lot cleaner and his storytelling is far superior.

John Romita Jr
Then

Also may I suggest posting the date of the art work when possible.

I disagree, his work on Claremont era Uncanny X-Men, especially during Rachel's first appearance was his best by far. His work on Eternals is better than the last ten years of work from him. But saying it's his best.

The coloring tech is better. But the line quality and penciling is a ton better.

Now

Like most people said JRJR has gotten way better just look at Eternals.

I just think Eternals wowed me when i first opened the comic, I couldn't believe JRJr did that. Its the best work ive seen from him, maybe since I dont hold some sort of nostalgic chokehold on his 80's or Spider-Man work. Overall, every one of his styles is great, he can do no wrong IMO, I just like his recent work better.

You can't judge line quality by finished art because "finished" is synonymous with "inked." Romita Jr.'s gotten much better, primarily in his linework, over the years. His storytelling's improved, too.

Anyway, this whole thread is pretty much rigged if you're gonna keep posting the kinds of pictures you've been posting. Covers, splash images, etc. only show you the artist's technical and anatomical knowledge and a bit of their style. It's easy for people to assume that Bachalo's gotten better based on a lone pic of Jean Grey from years ago and a lone cover from more recently; he's improved his rendering, certainly. But put a page of his art from the Death mini-series next to a page of his art from that "Assault on Weapon Plus" arc he did a few years ago and you'll see that his layouts, the storytelling methods he uses, and the clarity of each panel has taken a massive hit over the years. Bachalo used to turn in very crisp art with a cartoonish style that was nonetheless diverse enough to convey everything from levity to deep graveness in a scene. Now his art is pretty much always dark, usually just for the sake of being dark, and his pages are muddled, incomprehensible messes for the most part.

Samehere I was stunned at his artwork in Eternals.

I didn't like JRJR's work on Spider-Man. I prefer JRJR's run on Daredevil and Uncanny X-men. His Spider-Man was too bulky then and I don't much care for his previous work on Amazing. However, I like JRJR's previous run's on both Hulk and Wolverine.

Now...for Both Bachalo and Romita, Jr. At first, I didn't particularly like either one but they've both grown on me over the last few years.

Bachalo's style is a little far-out and bombastic but it's amazingly consistent and it that makes it work. I liken it somewhat to Ed McGuinness, who doens't go for the super-realistic, but rather a straight-up comic book fell.

JRJR's strength also lies, I believe in his consistency. His drawing is quite stylized and strays more towards cartoony than life-like but it works because he has a definitive look that he sticks to.

Well if it rigged to "now" according to you, they ought to not have said that his work was better then.

hmmmm, i'm not sure if the actually artist's work has changed so much over the time with bachalo or jrjr but rather the colorist they are working and how their influences of the final piece have on the finished image.

maybe it's just me...

Then. I hate Romita's style now, far too messy and blocky. Was much smoother then.
