ASSAULT ON NEW OLYMPUS-Marvel's Next Event?

What are you thoughts on this next "Marvel Event"?

It's not an "event" by Marvel standards. It's hyping a storyline in INCREDIBLE HERCULES and using a promoted one-shot to add some buzz and get some attention to it. IH sells about 30k a month and Marvel wants to boost it before it slips into cancellation numbers. It totally won't work, but I appreciate the effort.

Plus, it is good that this storyline is getting attention. It is a bit unintentionally hilarious that when the Greek gods are in trouble, you can count on high caliber heroes like Spider-Man, Wolverine, and two teams of Avengers to pitch in. But when the Judeo-Christian god is overthrown, y'know, the one that people actually still pray to worldwide in the billions, the only heroes who care are Ghost Rider and Hellstorm, Son of Satan. I mean you'd think genuine Christian hero Illuminator would be involved in GHOST RIDERS, at least.

At any rate, while it isn't an "event" in the literal sense, it is a major storyline on a title I love, and I can't wait for it.

I can't remember where I read it, but I think that after Dark Reign is over there won't be a major Marvel event for at least a year. That's probably why they extended Dark Reign by a few months.

Ahh thanks for the Clarification dread... so I guess this more like Messiah Complex or Messiah War... ok... well Messiah Complex got me into X Men so maybe this will put me over on Herc

I can't remember where I read it, but I think that after Dark Reign is over there won't be a major Marvel event for at least a year. That's probably why they extended Dark Reign by a few months.

Well, they are doing that World War Hulks story, which seems like an event. But then I havent really been paying attention to that.

I'm a bit more excited for this than WWHulks. This looks like the kind of big, fun Avengers story we haven't gotten to see basically since they let Bendis take over that franchise. WWHulks, on the other hand, will only interest me if all the superfluous extra Hulks die.

World War Hulks is a Hulk story. It's not a company-wide event like Civil War or Secret Invasion.

I'm really looking forward to this, obviously. Mythology, humor, Herc, a big adventure worthy of a dozen+ Avengers--it all sounds great to me. I'm particularly interested in what Ares' role will be.

Well, probably, but which side? He's one of Hera's favored sons (given that he's one of the few children Zeus had with her) and hates Herc, but he's also a Dark Avenger and isn't really a big fan of his mom or the other Olympians, either.

I could see him fighting alongside Herc. He'll be so happy to be involved in a huge brawl anyway.

I could see him going with either side, really. He has reasons to help or hurt both sides.

Maybe he'll just show up to kick all their asses--Herc and Hera 'cause he hates them, the Avengers 'cause they're unregistered.

It's amazing how much Ares has grown on me recently.

Oeming really rocked the hell out of updating him in his mini-series. Bendis has been building on that with him and Alex, which is good too. He's definitely a more complex and interesting character now than he was for most of his earlier existence. He used to just be a one-note villain Thor and/or Herc would stomp every now and then.

I will say, though, that I miss the mohawk/beard combo from those days.

I don't even think Ares is evil. Yeah, he loves to fight, but that's just cuz he's the god of war. I love the fact that he opted not to fight Fury and his Secret Warriors b/c of Alex.

I miss the beard/mohawk too, but not the guns. The axe is far more fitting

I agree, I think Ares would have some disdain for guns. But I don't mind him using them, since they are still tools of war.

I don't think so. They should do a Punisher/Wolverine/Ares team-up.

Salivate motor oil, most likely. And then whine about how he's a violent machine when he could've easily switched back to a fully human body.
