This is so exciting! I haven't read the book, but I'm most likely going to now. I love Lovecraft and I have a feeling that del Toro will do a great job with this.
So awesome, I can't wait!

I haven't read this in forever but last I remember there was really no resolution. The two explorers see all the horrible creatures and giant penguins and just leave.

Why are we talking about Cameron interfering? Jeez, talk about negativity. I don't see Cameron coming anywhere near this. Just producing. In fac, his name was one of the reasons this got made. He has made R rated tentpoles himself and we love those here. Why would he want PG-13? He's one of the people to know about meddling.

Cameron has more things to do that to watch over Del Toro's every move.

HP Lovecraft was a sick, sick man, but god help me if his stories were compelling and insanely imaginative. I'm looking forward to this.

Isn't "Shadow over Innsmoth" the only novel Lovecraft has ever written? It's not even more of a novella. ;)

That may be true, correct me if I'm wrong but I think it was "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" that was Lovecraft's only novel.

Lovecraft+ Del Toro + Cameron produsing & using his 3D tech= Happy Nivek!

Somehow I get the feeling they let Del Toro do this because of two things.

1) James Cameron is producing
2) 3D

If these two things didn't happen, it wouldn't have been made. Because before this they wouldn't even have done it.

This is a huge risk, and who knows how it will do at this point. I'm gonna see it.

This is the most likely case, but I still think Universal may get bit in the ass with this one. Not that I care. I'll see it a bajillion times based on the principal that this is a big-bugdet (FINALLY!), competent (FINALLY!) H.P. Lovecraft film. But the fact that this is a near-actionless, bleak as hell story that also kind of pisses on established religion and human origins(and as far as I know, Del Toro's keeping it all, and you know someone's going to complain about it, like those fools who called Watchmen a right-wing agenda film) with no hope whatsoever might turn people off.

Anyone know how The Mist fared with it's ending during it's theatrical run?

Lovecraft has never written a full blown novel. Just short stories and novellas.

They might feel like they're novel length due to his writing style, but they in fact are not.

Looking forward to this flick.

i think Cameron will not force del Toro to have a PG13 rating. but the PG13 rating will IMO happen.

an since Avatar made so much moeny everyone on the internet will complain that its all Cameron's fault.

Yay! At the Mountains of Madness and Del Toro are back! Best news of this week

I haven't read the novella, but does the movie have to be Rated R?

Yes it will. Del Toro says he needs to keep it that way.

I hope not. If Cameron is by his side, he will help Del Toro fight for the R rating. I downloaded the screenplay. I should read the story first.

Thanks for the link Whiskey!

Could you possibly hook me up? I have a copy, but it's my understanding that there's more than one draft floating around.

You can catch a glimpse of an Elder One in Hellboy 2. :woot:

On paper. But I think, I have it in .pdf, too.
Could you maybe pm'd it, please? :yay:

Del Toro has said numerous times in interviews that this has to be R, or he won't make it at all. And he always mentions this as a "big R-rated tentpole horror".

I meant, in the context of the book, was it actually graphic?

again Cameron.what if del Toro will accept that he will have a PG13 rating. what if he will do a PG13 rating because he wants to?

it doesnt matter IMO if Cameron is producing. the studio would give Cameron a R rating. but would they del Toro? i think they would not.

but all my post dont matter because i dont know what will be the budget. the lower the budget the bigger the chance for R. if its close to 100 or even above then IMO no way for a R rating.

all i hope is that del Toro will make the movie he wants to make.

I love At the mountain of madness, really cool story and Del Toro is great for the job. Bring on the Cthulhu!

Cthulhu is not in a faithful adaption of the story :cwink:

No. Lovecraft stories aren't graphic, with a few exceptions and even that is not a big deal by modern standards. Don't get yourself fooled, he didn't write any sort of cinematic stories. In most stories nothing really happens, it's all in the mind of the people. PG-13 could work.

My favourite HPL story is actually "The Outsider". What a twist.

Are you referring to the gay Cthulhu movie? :barf:

And no, I am not using "gay" as a pejorative. This was a really horrible gay movie from 2007 that appropriated the name Cthulhu. In a stretch, one might be able to call it a really crappy adaptation of "Shadow over Innsmouth," but the resemblance was minimal and it was full of gratuitous gay sex scenes (something I'm sure Lovecraft would not have approved of in the least). I have not seen it, but from what I hear the director didn't know jack squat about the mythos and just borrowed the name to get some attention for what otherwise is a crappy indie gay cinema project that no-one would have cared about.
