Nocturne

For a moody horror flick about obsession of the arts, I really dug it. It's like they combined parts of Suspiria and Whiplash (or Black Swan) with a little bit of Julia Ducournau's Raw. While it takes a bit for it to really get going, Sydney Sweeney really takes hold of the lead role and I really liked Madison Iseman trying something different. I loved the direction and the cinematography, but I wish they pushed it even more throughout the film. Overall, solid film.

Martin

A very interesting take on vampires by George Romero that tries to demystify all the vampire lore and reinvent it for modern day (or for the late 70s), much like what he did for zombies. I will say it's rough around the edges and due to the low budget it's not as well put together as his other films, but it's got a art house vibe to it that keeps it kinda compelling. It's definitely something that influenced a lot of modern day vampire flicks even if they don't know it. I thought John Amplas really sells it as Martin who is kinda complex due to his circumstance and I liked the cameos by Romero and Tom Savini. Overall, while I didn't completely loved it, there's a lot to admire about it and it's ripe for a great A24 style remake.

The Trial of the Chicago 7

A relevant real life court drama that was made for Aaron Sorkin. It takes all the fast & witty dialogue that Sorkin usually does and crank it up to 11 which is a good and bad thing. Storywise, Sorkin takes his artistic liberties and create a streamlined version of the events that happened in history. It's got a 90s sensibilities when it comes to the tone of the movie especially for a court drama. The stacked casting is where the movie really shines, everybody from Sacha Baron Cohen to Yahya Abdul-Mateen are phenomenal in it. They even got Eddie Redmayne to act for once. The movie pins down what it needs to say in a straightforward manner however I wish it had a larger scope. For Sorkin, it's a nice comeback after the so-so Molly's Game that never really got to its point. Overall, a really solid film with a fast pace even though the classic court room drama has been done to death.

Alien

Still a classic. I will say this was the first time watching the directors cut all the way through. And while I liked the added scene for what it is, it doesn't really add much to the overall film.

Alien 3 (Assembly Cut)

Finally saw it and I guess I'm a Alien 3 apologist... at least with this cut. As much as it sucks for them to kill off Newt and Hicks, I did like how it was used to fuel Ripley's motivations. That first hour was really well done and I really dug the prison set up along with the storyline with the prisoners. For David Fincher, his directing was pretty good and I love his choices aesthetically, it really meshes well with the rest of the 90s. Also it might be a controversial thing to say, but I did like the Xenomorph return to form to the original in terms of horror and it was more menacing and smart over the Xenomorphs in Aliens... where they made them mostly simple creatures that the Marines shot up except for the Queen (not saying it's bad thing either). If I had any complaints, it would probably be the ending. I would've liked more time with the Weyland–Yutani team & Bishop.

Alien Resurrection

A mostly below average slasher/creature feature masquerading as a Alien sequel. Almost every move this movie makes feels like it came from a fanfic who desperately wanted to undo Ripley's death and mimic some bad slashers. Not surprising this came from Joss Whedon because from the pirate crew that shows up in the movie feels like a prototype version of his Firefly show except almost everyone is annoying. It's got a great cast which is a shame that the writing isn't as sharp as the previous films. The directing is kinda there and I will say there are a few scenes that I enjoyed that almost evens it out. Overall, while it's pretty bad-mediocre, it's still nowhere near as bad as AVP2.

The Slumber Party Massacre

For a Halloween knockoff, it's a fascinating slasher that has some serious tonal shifts in what it wants to say. For what it is, there's some decent kills to go along with the T&A even though there's a lack of reason for the killer. Overall, a solid dumb fun slasher flick.

Basket Case

A wild "so bad it's good" horror flick that is also incredibly disturbing about a dude and his disconjoined twin. It's also full of bad actors with terrible ADR that manages to be entertaining. I honestly haven't had this kind of combo since Sleepaway Camp. I love the early 80s grimy NY backdrop and it works extremely well with what's going on in the movie. Overall, dug it. It's exactly the kind of silly midnight movie that would play well in theaters and genre film festivals.

Rebecca

I guess I'm gonna go against the grain on this... I thought it was a really well done remake that closely follows Hitchcock's original film much in the vein of other movies that try to retell a classic in a similar way. Ben Wheatley does a phenomenal job translating it with a modern sense of filmmaking. There's some beautiful cinematography that takes hold of the movie early on. I thought the casting was spot on and Lily James really carries the movie along with Kristin Scott Thomas. A lot of people will be comparing to the original while there are some differences, it's mostly the same with a slicker look to it. Overall, it's very a serviceable thriller that can co-exist with the original.

Jacob's Ladder

Can't believe it took me this long to see it. It's a phenomenal psychological horror film that goes into PTSD, paranoia, and loss among war vets. It's a Tim Robbins performance that is up there with Shawshank Redemption for me. Also loved Elizabeth Peña's performance as well. It had amazing directing all around and I loved how they showcased NY here. Overall, this is a damn good 'elevated' horror flick.

I liked this. I agree with the Black Swan comparisons. Blumhouse did that story on a budget. It does take a while to get going but when it does Sydney Sweeney makes it stick together. I feel like the more horror/supernatural element could've been better fleshed out. Sweeney kinda surprised me, but I admit to only being familiar with her instagram pics. A solid 7.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan

Very nice! Great success! While I will admit it's not nearly as hilarious as the first film, it's got plenty of funny bits that keep you going. I did like the addition of Maria Bakalova playing Borat's daughter and having the film center around her more. As for the Rudy Giuliani part, it's scandalous, but somehow I was expecting worse. Overall, a obviously relevant mockumentary.

Roald Dahl's The Witches

I've never seen the original, but I thought this was a mostly fun and disturbing kids film. It's got all the familiar Robert Zemeckis signs where it's overly produced and overly CG'ed, but I somehow didn't mind it here mostly due to the cast they got. Considering Guillermo del Toro wrote it, this has some disturbing moments with the witches that really work. With the way it was shot, you can tell this was made to be seen in a theater in 3D. As for the cast, right away, Anne Hathaway is overacting her ass off and it actually works for what crazy plot they got here. She along with Octavia Spencer carried the movie and made it enjoyable. Overall, not bad but not great.

The Silence of the Lambs

One of those movies I never got around to until now and yeah, it's damn good. I don't know what else can be said that hasn't already been said, Jodie Foster & Anthony Hopkins are both brilliant in it and it's no wonder why it cleaned up at the Oscars. It's directed wonderfully by Jonathan Demme and it kinda laid the road map for other big psychological horror movies in the 90s and 2000s. Overall, incredible stuff.

Bad Hair

A solid horror comedy that literally goes back into the 80s for some campy fun in the vein of The Stuff and Little Shop Of Horrors while having some social commentary about black hair. Great cast and I really liked Elle Lorraine who plays the lead. There's some fun cameos like Kelly Rowland and Usher where they get their moment to shine. Justin Simien does a great job directing it and I loved the cinematography. That being said, there are some pacing issues that kinda brings it down. Overall, really fun.
