From what I heard:

-the actress had been having some issues with Will on the set

-she got pregnant and they had to write it into the show. Then she got pregnant again and they opted to not deal with it again so she got the boot.

Yes!!!! This one right here is the one I hate the most !!!

The replacement sucked ass! No chemistry whatsoever with the rest of the cast !!!

I'd say this is one of the best recasts in TV history. It surely helped that both actors were named "Dick"!! Aside from one Dick having a slightly bigger head, and a bit of a gap in his front teeth, you'd barely tell the difference.


Beside, soap operas have the worst recastings of anything! Sometimes, a character's whole ethnicity will change when they recast! Now that's bad recasting!

New Harriet Winslow sucked. I mean, how can you recast the character who was the premise of the show when it was spun off?

The thing about this recasting is that happened just as the series was winding down. It seemed so random, and we never really had a chance to get used to her. Mind you, I think a lot of people had since turned their backs on Family Matters anyway.

The Aunt Vivian recasting was just so drastic because, and I hate to pull the race card but, it seemed like the wanted to limit the number of "dark-skinned" actors on the show. But I ultimately got used to Daphne Maxwell Reid as Aunt Vivian, and quite frankly, her and the actress who played Will's mother looked more believable as sisters.

Fun Fact: Diederick Bader from The Drew Carey Show was on Fresh Prince as the fiance of one of Will's other aunts. But on the character's third appearance, he was recast, and that actor ended up with a recurring role on . . . The Drew Carey Show.

The thing about these recasts, and Harriet Winslow's, is that once the actress was changed the character sort of changed too.

Laurie was pretty much evil and ****ty, the new Laurie wasn't ****ty enough and hardly ever did any evil stuff to Eric.

Aunt Viv was sassy and took no crap from no one, not even Philip. New Viv, whenever she got pissed she'd just run upstairs.

I remember that they replaced Aunt Viv because 1. The original Viv wanted a raise and 2. She had issues with Will becoming a producer.

With Laurie, the original actress had substance abuse problems.

With Harriet, the REAL Harriet got fed up with the sci-fi aspect of the show and wanted it to be refocused on the Winslow family (LIKE IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN!!!!) as opposed to Urkel's weekly antics. The studio, disagreed.

All 3 replacements sucked...though the NEW Laurie was cute. PLUS...the NEW Harriet played a nun in a prior episode...WTF?!

Okay, so I feel horrible that I never noticed the recasting of Aunt Viv OR Harriet Winslow! I watched BOTH of those shows!


Another recasting that annoyed me was the recasting of Becky on "Roseanne". Every time I saw the new actress I saw the "fake Becky".

I love the episode where Lecy Goranson came back, and everyone's like, "Where the hell have you been?" And, of course the special end credits with both actresses in the 50s sitcom motif.

To an extent, I can understand wanting a raise once the show had become a bonafied hit. But having issues with Will becoming a producer? It was HIS SHOW!!!! Like that fact that the character's name on the show was the actor's real name, and the show was called The Fresh Prince of Bel Air weren't indication enough of whose show it was! Some people need to know their roles and shut their mouths! Like when Jorja Fox and George Eads tried to force CBS to give them raises for CSI, and CBS was like, "okay, you're fired!" I've never seen such backpeddaling in my life! "Oh, oh, I overslept! That's why I wasn't on set this morning. I was comin' to work! Honest!"

The problem is, the Winslows weren't interesting characters. They were just a poor man's Huxtables only without the chemistry of the Huxtables. Urkel was the only interesting character on the show. I agree the sci-fi aspect (including Stefan Ur-kel) got annoying, but his weekly antics are what saved the show from a year one cancelation.
