Barbarella comes again...

Beckinsale-arella?

Even though writers were just brought on board for a remake of the sci-fi sex-o-rama BARBARELLA, the actress rumor mill has already been whirling like Jane Fonda disrobing in zero-gravity.

The latest lass rumored to be slipping into (and out of, one expects/hopes) the attire of the sexy interstellar agent is infinitely lovely Kate Beckinsale, no stranger to genre (and skintight) material herself. According to a Daily Express gossip source, Beckinsale is "among the frontrunners" for the part of the dishy spacefaring heroine who likes to shag.

Of course, despite the Daily Express' proclamation of being "The World's Greatest Newspaper", they're probably not worth a ****e as a source for valid movie news -- just two days ago they declared Brit babe Sienna Miller as "top of the wish list" for the BARBARELLA role (they also labeled her as "younger and cheaper", which seems accurate). I did, however, take advantage of an opportunity to use this photo of Beckinsale.

The libidinous antics of the 1968 kitsch classic will likely be downplayed for the update -- producer Dino de Laurentiis previously said the new BARBARELLA would be more of a "female James Bond in space", which is probably why he hired CASINO ROYALE scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (who also wrote the previous two 007 catastrophes).

Which studio is undertaking this? If it's an independant venture by De Laurentis then the biggest obstacle is funding.

He hardly had problems in the past securing funding for his movies.
And he'll probably be shooting in some cheap place like Morocco or Hungary.
The soundstages were they shot the old Barbarella movie are not so far away from my house.

Kate Beckinsale is set to star in a remake of erotic sci-fi classic 'Barbarella'.

(BANG) - Kate Beckinsale is set to star in a remake of 'Barbarella'.
Movie bosses think the British actress is a perfect choice to play the cult 60s heroine - a role made famous by Jane Fonda in the original 1968 erotic space adventure.
A source told Britain's Daily Express newspaper: "Jane Fonda made the 'Barbarella' role very much her own all those years ago and she is bound to be a tough act to follow.
"But the feeling is that Kate has just the right combination of beauty, humour and acting talent for the part."
Sienna Miller, Angelina Jolie and Halle Berry have also been linked to the role.
The script for the $124 million project will be written by Robert Wade and Neal Purvis, who penned 'Casino Royale'.
Peter Webber, whose credits include 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' and 'Hannibal Rising', is set to direct.
Producer Dino De Laurentiis said: "The reinvented heroine will be akin to a female James Bond - in outer space."
In the original film, Barbarella stripped naked before being taken to a mysterious planet where she battled her enemies and had several sexual experiences.

YEAS! :D

O.K. Looks like this movie will beat Wonder Woman to the silver screen! Good luck, Kate! I hope this movie as good as fun as a Dirty Pair movie. :woot:

Beckinsale Denies Barbarella Talk
"Never heard anything about it," she says.
by Scott Collura

US, April 26, 2007 - Last week, the rumor mill was buzzing with talk that Underworld star Kate Beckinsale would be taking on the title role in producer Dino De Laurentiis's remake of his classic sexy sci-fi tale Barbarella. Of course, the fact that the info was coming from the British tabloid Daily Express didn't help to allay the doubts of those who have been burned by U.K. tabloids in the past. Now, Beckinsale herself has confirmed to IGN that no one has even approached her about the film.

"I just found out myself today," the actress said last week from the set of the currently shooting Whiteout. "It's thrilling! I've never heard anything about it before today. One of the [Whiteout] crewmembers told me."

The planned remake of the 1968 Jane Fonda starrer is being scripted by Casino Royale screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. In years past, Lindsay Lohan and Drew Barrymore have both been mentioned as being up for the role, but an "unnamed insider" told the Express last week that "the feeling is that Kate has just the right combination of beauty, humor, and acting talent for the part."

Too bad nobody told Kate that. Still, the actress joked with IGN that if she did take the role, it would require a name change.

"Beckinsale-arella!" she laughed. "It's gotta happen!"

Robert Rodriguez to Direct Barbarella
Source: Variety
May 21, 2007

Robert Rodriguez will direct Barbarella for a 2008 Universal Pictures release, reports Variety.

Rodriguez is working with Casino Royale screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade on the remake of the 1968 film starring Jane Fonda as a futuristic mercenary. That version was produced by Dino De Laurentiis, who is producing the remake with Martha De Laurentiis.

Barbarella first appeared seven years earlier in a French comic book written and illustrated by Jean-Claude Forest.

"I love this iconic character and all that she represents, and I'm truly excited by the challenge of inviting a new audience into her universe," Rodriguez said.

Dino De Laurentiis hinted at the flavor of the remake: "In our vision, the future is female, and I can't wait to introduce 'Barbarella' to a new generation of moviegoers," he said.

Purvis and Wade recently finished scripting the next installment in the Bond franchise, James Bond 22.

Diora Baird for Barbarella! CAN I GET AN AMEN!

Hell yes! AMEN brother.

Kate would be perfect!
Agreed.
Now that I'm actually seen the movie. I gotta disagree little bit with myself. Kate has the looks, but is she willing to go nude? Hmm, guess no. But is there any nudeness in the remake? Hmm, guess no.

And wtf to the news of RR directing this? Huh. If it's coming from Variety it's gotta be true. But what happened to Peter Webber?

What ever happens with this film, the original is still teh best! I was already orderding the DVD (I saw the film in theaters last friday), but considering next year is the 40th Anniversary of the movie there could come some SE DVD. Maybe I'll wait, or maybe I won't. We'll see.

Rodriguez, this should be good.

I have a feeling McGowan just shot to the top of the actress list.

Beckinsale....nah. I want my Barberella curvy. Like a Frazetta woman.

You mean Rac and I are the only Diora supportas?!?!

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!! Let Jennifer Love Hewitt get this role!!!! PLEASE!! PLEASE!!

Barbarella Doubles Her Pleasure

Jane Fonda was just a little past 30 when she tackled the role, which makes Charlize Theron damn well the perfect person to wag the tail of this new version.

While Kirk Kerkorian continues at age 90 to rumble through the boardrooms of Las Vegas, 87-year-old Italian movie producer Dino De Laurentiis has decided to move from Hannibal the Cannibal to Barbarella the Temptress. It's a good thing, too, because it would be hard to stomach yet another episode of Hannibal Lecter sans Sir Anthony.

De Laurentiis, having engaged Casino Royale screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade to primp up the 1968 Jane Fonda camp classic, has now decided that Robert Rodriguez is the man to do justice to a re-imagining of his original production of Barbarella. If he's smart, he'll catch up to Jane Fonda on the Georgia Rule worldwide promo tour and convince her to leave room on her schedule for a cameo.

Original director Roger Vadim, who died of cancer in 2000, may be rolling over in his French grave. But he should know that nothing is sacred in the land of contemporary remakes. Give it about two months before the Internet casting rumors start circulating hot and heavy, just the way Barbarella likes it.
