Up until the Knightfall storyarc, the writers at DC had been compositing characters like James Bond, Cary Grant, among many others into their Batman mythos.

That is, if you weren't aware of the parallels from Dennis O'Neil's novel, that they had built Bruce Lee into Batman. Of course, Bruce himself played a superhero Kato in Green Hornet, a counterpart of Batman. For example, Bruce Wayne does one-handed push-ups only on his forefinger and thumb. He's a master of martial arts. He's philosophical. He wears black and yellow. But most obvious is his back injury. In the epilogue of the novel, O'Neil said he didn't want the myth of Batman to be a bullet-spraying macho man and he listed a bunch of 80's action stars, none of which were Bruce Lee. And that's when it dawned on me who his inspiration was.

Bruce Lee injured his back while training, and of course he got back into shape. In his biopic, "Dragon" starring Jason Scott Lee (no relation), he got his ass whupped by a big dude and that's how he got his back injury.

Bane therefore is Bolo, from Enter The Dragon.

People can say it dates further back (David vs Goliath), but I'm just pointing out correlation based on the contemporary pop culture up until then. That's how comic books are written anyway to show the sign of the times.
