Somebody mentioned earlier that the popularity of the character depends on their stories (or something to that effect). I think that's true, to some extent between Supes and Bats.

For me, as a writer, I'd find it easier to write a Batman story both on film and in the comics: the best ones are always a mixture of James Bond action-adventure, with a dash of Sherlock Holmes problem-solving, and a little bit of tragedy to give the characters depth/motive/development, etc. That's why it's so easy to love Batman onscreen and in the comics. Even if he has a love interest, it's always in the vein of James Bond; if he has a 'family', they become his team mates and travel around the world to stop an evil terrorist like Al Ghul.

Superman has a lot of layers, and as a writer you can make so many stories out of him: a typical superhero action movie with Superman at its core, a screwball/romantic comedy with Supes taking a backseat for Lois and Clark and the DP crew, a sci-fi alien movie, a disaster/family drama, a coming-of-age story, a self-discovery story ...but not all of them will resonate with Superman fans. Hopefully, in the next few years the writers will find the right mix of all of these layers so ALL of us can be satisfied.

So much wrong on this thread when it comes to Batman :funny:

Most popular superhero in the world and still so many people don't understand the character.

See, this statement totally needs to be expanded upon. In all the posts here that you surmise have "gotten so much wrong" how about explaining how you and others I assume have got it "right". What have others here so completly missed the mark on in your view? That'd be far more interesting than a blanket dismissal of other fans' insights and opinions with a smiley face, don't you think? What makes what others have put forward so laughable?

Seconded.

Like em both but have to give it to supes.

Aww, thanks man! I'm glad someone likes my ramblings on these two.

Well, this poll tightened up considerably. 60-60 apiece.

Wow, Supes has actually taken the lead. I'm impressed. Well done SHH, well done.

I like them both but Batman all day long because his humanity makes him a much more interesting character to many people. He is the absolute best that we can ever hope to be.

If one needs any proof of his more enduring appeal, see the title of this movie.

I grew up on Batman, but Superman has become my favourite comic character over the years. Aaaand I hit the wrong button on the poll, and voted for Batman by mistake before catching it. So, that's good...

Well living in Iraq where s**t hit the fan on a daily basis I became dependent on a character like superman to maintain my sanity.
Like Lois lane said in STAS regarding superman; "He's the Nietzschian idea all wrapped up in a red cape" and that's so true.
Superman is the embodiment of wish fulfillment, he's the dream and the dreamer so to those who think he's lame, well all I can do is laugh and advice to stay off the drugs.

Batman has a much cooler looking suit ...
:word:

Superman is good in the comics I've read - All Star being the best one. I just wish he had a better and bigger quality media representation across the board. Video games - don't bother there. Cartoon wise, Superman TAS is quality, along with the old Fleischer stuff.

I haven't seen Lois and Clark for ages, but have a soft spot for it and Dean Cain. The 78 film with Reeve is a classic, even if I respect more than love it. Superman II is decent, even though there's issues around re-edits and such.

MoS is my favourite so far, but think we can get even better.

For any quibbles I sometimes have with Superman, or the brand, they seem to be washed away by his undeniable iconic nature. The origin story. The chest emblem. The Daily Planet. The well known characters like Lois and Lex. They're household names and images pretty much everybody recognises, and can't help but enjoy in some fashion, even if it's just the idea.

Very interesting to see the poll so close here. In nearly every other poll I've seen, Batman is favored in a huge, huge landslide.

Those are the first three that come up in a Google search, anyway. Most likely the results would be similar if you took a poll of the GA at the theaters. I'd suspect its so close on here because this is a Superman forum. Or half of it, at the very least.

Superman. I bleed blue. Always have, always will. It's easier to accept brooding as being badass and popular, but it takes a real down to Earth man and a sense of character to stand out and be a beacon of hope by developing a voice for all things good in a world where it's so easy to be corrupted and surrounded by sinful actions.

Superman reminds us that a helpful smile or a simple act of kindness separates the popular from the honest. Plus, Superman, as a character, is written to parallel my exact personality and humbling nature as my own person. When I read him, I can't help but relate to the message of treating people the way you want to be treated and bringing out the good in ones personality and never letting the dark and weakness get the better of a situation.

Batman's a more badass character and people seem to go for the edgier bad-boy far too often, but Superman is more extraordinary because most of society sometimes can't stand that moral compass in the room because they know they can't hold a candlelight to the good and feel small in comparison and that's where I think the heart of Superman flourish's. Just my .2cents.

Great post  Unfortunately, the Superman you described wasn't the one we got in MoS. Not by a long, long shot. Even the way he started being called Superman...it irks me to no end.

I find it rather fitting that the poll is so close at the moment. This pair works so well together.

That last one is just for fun, lol.

I've always been a huge Superman fan. All of that power and he ultimately ends up as the moral compass we should all strive for. Clearly a super man. I can think of no better role model to aspire to become.

Has anyone else seen the Superman/Batman dub from The 40 Year Old Virgin? I think it's hilarious.

Typically in other polls like this from other websites, it ends up being fairly close but Batman wins.
