Hmm...we could say the same about how SFX/CGI in the Avengers trailers look like a ripoff from the Transformers films?

Not really. The only similarities is that it has action in a city. I didn't see tracking shots of Iron Man, or Hulk smashing humanoid aliens, or Thor summoning storms in the Transformers trailers. Plus Avengers actually has some character moments in the trailers.

This literally looks like they are fighting Decepticons, only just at sea. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the SFX were actually recycled.

I know it's basically an attempt to look all badass and cool, but I like how the camera goes inside the various ship guns to showcase how the weapons prime themselves before firing.

Jesus I can't believe people are comparing the Avengers to this POS movie.

This is the poor mans Transformers, and a bad one at that. If it wasn't for the good sfx, this could easily be a Syfy tv movie.

As I've said before, this movie looks like harmless Summer popcorn fun. I'm anticipating it.

Maybe if Battleship was based on a Comic Book...people in here would feel differently about this movie? Maybe?

Probably. Considering that comics tend to have actual storylines and characters to adapt. Hell, even Transformers has a bare narrative in its toyline since there are good robots and bad robots. Even Clue (an awesome movie) had the trappings of a story and characters. Battleship? What's the story there? And why would you just jump to aliens when making one up?

I think what they should have done is a kinda, Hunt for Red October style thriller, but obviously with ships instead of subs. Not a alien invasion movie that costs 250 million dollars and will probably bomb.

Transformers has had years and years and hundreds and thousands of years of pages of millions of comics over the many years, but I bet Bay didn't read one of them, he probably just looked at the back of the toy boxes, y'know, for a split second, yet, the man still makes them the most profitable movies around at the moment.
I don't like any of his movies, but I think he must be some kind of a reverse Ed Wood genius.
but, he does have genuine skills when it comes to shooting action, I guess that is what counts when you are doing movies bout massive robots fighting each other.
Because, when all is said and done, that is what the movies are gonna be about, you're never gonna get a Transformers movie exploring philosophical notions with a bunch of robots standing around talking. Too expensive, too silly, those tales are for other movies.

They don't need philosophy or deep social commentaries. Just well written and developed characters with a story that makes sense and is interesting. That's all you should ask for from a big action movie. You shouldn't settle for less.

Additionally, The Avengers is drawn from three movies and comic books that went as far back as the 1960's, and each character (with exception of Agent Coulson and maybe Maria Hill) has a wealth of stories and backgrounds behind them. Battleship is named after a board game that has as much relationship with the actual movie as The Hunger Games has with Twilight, with characters that were created specifically for the movie. I fail to see any similarities between these two, even accounting for the action scenes shown in the trailers.

You think this is going to bomb...?

imo this movie isn't going to be anything special, most likely crappy dialogue, but overall a fun ride.

Yeah, nothing is coming out on the 18th aside from this except for What to Expect When You're Expecting, which is basically counter programming. It'll win its weekend,

Battleship is coming out next week in Belgium.

Searched for the runtime and on Belgian website about movies they say 131 minutes. Let's hope this is true.

I go watch this movie for the special effects and action, not for Rihanna or character development or whatever people always want in big summer hollywoodblockbusters.

Luckily for you people, the website where it says the movie is 131 minutes long is in Dutch, French and English! So here is the direct link in English:

You think it won't? It needs to make like, 600-700 million, just to break even. And it has the guy from John Carter, some flashy SFX and a stupid name.

I don't think so, it doesn't really have any competition and a lot of people seemed to be hyped for it. Even if it doesn't make that much I honestly can't see it failing.

Plus I don't think people are going to be turned off just because it has the guy from John Carter in it.

You'd be surprised at how fickle people are. When is it released? The week after Avengers right? I don't see it taking the top spot away.

It has a huge budget, it's gotta make 600 million and upwards to be a success. I don't see it making much more than 600 mill.

Over here Dark Shadows comes out after Avengers, then this the following week.

Based on what? How much money did the thing cost?

People often go to movies with flashy SFX in droves, hence, they make money.

It's also got some guy named Liam Neeson.

How is BATTLESHIP a stupid name?

How tall is Taylor Kitsch exactly? Or I should ask, how short?
Thought Taylor was an even six foot, but look at that photo, Alex is still taller. Funny how Alex just towers over everyone. Always funny in True Blood when he's next to Anna Paquin, he's like at least a foot taller than her. :p

It's gotta be at least 200-300 million dollars.

Hmm true it does have Neeson. But his involvement in the Titans films hasn't exactly helped them set the box office on fire. If he was the lead actor in this, then i'd have a whole different outlook on it.

It's stupid in context with what the movie is about. I think it would have worked better with a serious thriller, like i said, a Hunt for Red October esque navy thriller.
