Alfonso Cuarón/J.J. Abrams Drama Lands At NBC With Pilot Production Commitment
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

EXCLUSIVE: In his foray into American television, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón has teamed with J.J. Abrams for a high-concept drama, which just landed at NBC with a pilot production commitment. Cuarón is set to direct the pilot, which he will co-write with Mark Friedman (Home Of the Brave). It is about a girl in possession of a great gift/powers — which will come into their own in seven years — and the man who is sprung from prison to protect her from those trying to hunt her down .

Warner Bros. TV and Abrams’ studio-based Bad Robot are producing the untitled project, with Abrams, Cuarón, Friedman and Bryan Burk executive producing and Kathy Lingg co-executive producing. The project reunites Friedman with Warner Bros. TV where he created the ABC drama series The Forgotten, co-produced by another top WBTV pod, Jerry Bruckheimer TV. Mexican-born Cuarón received Oscar nominations for writing Y Tu Mamá También and Children of Men, both of which he also directed. He also helmed Harry Potter and the Prisoner Of Azkaban.

This marks the second sale and second pilot production commitment for Bad Robot this season, on the heels of the company re-upping with WBTV for three more years. At Fox, Bad Robot has a robot-cop drama written by Fringe showrunner J.H. Wyman. The company has three series on the air, departing critical darling Fringe, hot sophomore Person of Interest, and new NBC drama Revolution, which premiered to big ratings on Monday. Cuarón and Friedman are with UTA, Abrams recently signed with CAA.
Love the idea of a Cuaron-created series, but the concept does make me wonder... she comes into these "powers" of hers in seven years? What, like, **** won't hit the fan until season 8?

Well, the thing about having a great destiny is that **** can hit the fan as soon as somebody who sees your destiny as conflicting with their interests finds out about it.

Sounds to me like the story'll revolve around her being groomed to be some big hero or messianic figure while folks who don't like the sound of it try to shut her down.

Or heck, maybe the reverse. Maybe she's supposed to be like the Antichrist or something.

NBC & Warner Bros. Do Preliminary Casting On Alfonso Cuarón/J.J. Abrams Drama
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros TV is exploring casting of key roles in its high-concept drama project from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón and J.J. Abrams. The project, tentatively titled Believe, already has a pilot production commitment. It is not unusual for studios to do preliminary casting work on high-profile projects before a formal green light, especially those with a strong, hard-to-find lead whose casting can make or break a show. WBTV is doing the same with the lead in its potential Wonder Woman origin series at the CW, Amazon.

Directed by Cuarón and written by him and Mark Friedman, Believe is about a girl in possession of a great gift/powers — which will come into their own in seven years– and the man who is sprung from prison to protect her from those trying to hunt her down. The breakdown, released this week by casting director April Webster, is searching for the young lead: 10-year-old Bo, innocent and beautiful, a regular girl who has a depth and mystery to her. While the focus is on finding Bo (see the exhaustive search Les Miserables movie went through before finding 10-year-old Isabelle Allen for the young Cosette role), I hear feelers also have been put out for the adult male lead as well as another older character. WBTV and Abrams’ Bad Robot are producing the project, with Abrams, Cuarón, Friedman and Bryan Burk executive producing and Kathy Lingg co-executive producing.

Raised by a small group known as the “True Believers,” the orphaned girl has been safeguarded from harmful outsiders who would use her forces for personal gain. But now that she is 10, her powers have become stronger, and the threat has grown more dangerous. With her life and future now in jeopardy, the “Believers” turn to the only person they see fi t to be her full-time protector. That is, once they break him out of jail. Tate, a wrongfully imprisoned death row inmate who’s lost his will, is initially reluctant – until he witnesses one of her extraordinary abilities. Bo sees people for who they truly are… and who they may become. Tate and Bo begin their journey, one in which trust must be earned. Traveling from city to city, every place they stop and everyone they meet will be changed forever. Ugh. They just had to schedule it against The Walking Dead, didn't they? :whatever

NBC's bombing hard for not releasing their midseason trailers. Specifically because I'm much more excited for their midseason than I am for their new fall stuff. :o

With Cuarón attached, I'm there. Man, what a cast they came up with for this show. Lindo and MacLachlan have me interested. And hot damn, Guillory and Chung are fine as hell.

:o

Finally something...

NBC, couldn't you have just released footage with your fall stuff? Come on... get your head in the game. :o

Looks good. Makes me wish NBC was doing a better job of putting this stuff out there.
