Ben Affleck To Team With DC’s Geoff Johns On Standalone ‘Batman’ Film

Ellis loves to be doom and gloom about the current state of movies. What he said doesn't surprise me at all.

Which makes it even funnier and obvious. The point I'm making isn't about the point of the article in which it was intended. The point is the clickbait articles spinning it out of control to make it appear as if The Batman is doomed and how much WB doesn't have a handle on the DCEU. This type of thing will be fuel added to the fire when necessary. Affleck said he's not rushing and it's big to get it right, yet, that will fall on deaf ears from here on out. The words Ellis muttered will now be used conveniently throughout now and until the time 'The Batman' starts heavy production. Guaranteed.

Yep. Unfortuantely, that's just the way things work in the community these days. Rationale means nothing in certain environments.

It would just be ridiculous if they were really having that much trouble coming up with a good Batman script. Characters like Superman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, I can understand, those are hard characters to write a big screen adaptation for. But Batmanis one of the greatest characters in comics or literature period, with such a fantastic history of villains and storylines to draw from. The nature of his character allows for so many great avenues to explore, the mystery, the action, the gritty crime drama. He's like Sherlock meets James Bond, as a ninja. As long as there are people who can create great noir crime drama films, they shouldn't have that much trouble finding somebody who can deliver on a Batman movie. Keep it simple, leave all the magic and aliens and super powers and wacky science fiction for the other characters

They really don't need to change the formula too much from the Nolan films, just make it a little more stylized and comic booky, like the way Snyder filmed the Batman action scenes, just use the Animated Series as a visual reference

Or hopefully make it visually and stylistically like the Arkhamverse

It's a weird statement to backpedal on, and his backpedal is even weirder. I mean if it was an interview why would he assume any comments like that wouldn't be fair game?

That being said, his original statement was just weird. I mean yeah, I can see studio heads being more concerned about the bottom line and global audience. At the same time, that doesn't mean if there are 30 problems they can fix to easily make it better, it's not like those fixes can't get made.

I read his original statement more like a typical exec not caring too much about the quality of the film since they know they'll make money due to Batman. People just read into his statements how they wanted and made it more negative than it really was.

I read his comments exactly as he intended them. Of course the script has problems. It's probably still at first draft. Those things are almost always trash. Movies are really written in the editing room. Even after polishing, most of the stuff I read in shooting scripts that get cut out or ad libbed are horrible examples of screenwriting. The fact that there are script problems at this stage is not even remotely the story. The story is what we've all kind of known at this point - that the problem at DC is the business major executives for WB and Time Warner having a say in the creative process.

It's not so much his comments about the script that worry me. It's that the executives he was talking to didn't seem to give a **** about it.

I think that's the more worrying aspect. Even if it was good, the fact that they only care about how much it makes here or overseas is the thing.

Well, they're business men. As long as these films are "good enough" to make money and drum up interest for the next go-around, they're fine. Of course, they do have goals of how much money they want to make off it though.

So, yeah a script that is still being worked on and has some problems isn't surprising. An exec not even caring how good/bad it is at this stage isn't surprising neither.

Execs' on the whole are not 'film fans' in the truest sense, in this genre, whether it's 'close to the comics or source material' they won't two f**ks about, whether it makes money is the single denominator and whether it comes in at under 2.5 hrs in the edit, that's all they care about.

Mark Madden: I gotta tell ya. I can’t wait for the Affleck thing. Because Affleck’s so interesting. How well do you know him? I mean like, I love the way he puts a different spin on stuff like — for example this Batman movie. I’m sure it will be different from any one ever done.

Joe Manganiello: It is. That’s true. When I met Ben we sat down and we talked about, you know, the role. We talked about the movie. His take is a fresh take but I think the audience is going to be surprised. Because it’s a road that no one’s really gone down that’s completely integral to who Batman is. And I think it’s gonna be refreshing but at the same time completely familiar. But it’s going to take this franchise in a direction that I think a lot of people are going to be really happy about.

It’s going to be gritty and action packed and cerebral and all of those elements that people love about Batman. Ben’s a great director, man. I mean the last movie that man directed won Best Picture. He’s got an Oscar for writing. Like, this is all the components to go down as a… everything is lined up for a really really really great movie. Not only a superhero movie but just a great, great movie. Which is why, you know, I told him in the room man, when I met him. “I should be so lucky, I’d be in great hands to work with you, I love your movies, let’s do this.”

As long as WB don't interfere with the process, allowing Ben his freedom and time to work out any kinks in the script, then things will be fine.

I love how they sound like two dudebros just gushing over Affleck.

I'm really liking Joe's passion and excitement for the movie. I think we are in for something special.

Because he's excited? Not to burst your bubble but every actor says stuff like this before making a big movie. Some are genuine, some are playing it up to build hype. But they all have one thing in common, they always say it's going to be great and different and unlike anything we've seen and can't wait to get started.

Excitment is great but i've heard this stuff from Jesse Eisenberg and everyone else about how different and amazing it's going to be. Joe still does nothing for me as an actor so it doesn't exactly make me thrilled.

No actually. I'm just admiring what he has to say. Have you seen any of Ben's movies? We are in for something special because Ben makes great movies.

Sorry to burt your bubble...

Ben directing this makes me excited but then i look at who's playing the main villain, who helped Ben with the writing, how the producers don't give a damn and how the script is messy...and yes it puts me back to down to earth.

That's true, but what he said does have me excited. I've got faith in Affleck, and I think the fact that he's going to be directing and starring in it, as a character that he seems to be passionate about and will want to be successful for future movies, he's also learned a lot about the genre and fan expectations in the past couple years, and the dude does know good movies, I think all of that bodes well that he's going to make sure the script and story is on point.

Every DC movie will get rumours that it's a mess. Just too many that want them to fail.

i would like a flashback with jeffrey dean morgan ,or somethin like ......when Supe saw & speak to his father on BVS

There would be absolutely no purpose in doing so. Let's move forward, not backward.

What direction do you all think this will go then?

I remember an interview from many Months ago when Affleck had this to say:

https://www.google.com/amp/www.forb...cript-warner-sets-release-date/?client=safari

"The world’s greatest detective aspect of Batman… will probably be expanded upon further in the Batman movie that I would do. I think all great Batman stories are, at heart, detective stories. That’s why they feel like Noir movies in a way — somehow it feels like it could be The Maltese Falcon.”

Now I don't want to hold my breathe since he didn't literally say "My Batman movie will be like The Maltese Falcon" BUT with that statement, Affleck seems interested in taking this into the direction of a old school detective noir. So maybe, what this is ALSO what Joe is alluding to in his responses during that interview.

I remember this quote... the notion of Batman film that focuses on the noir aspect made me really excited. Unfortunately, I don't see how Deathstroke would fit this direction, so I assume it's not what Affleck will do after all.
