The award shows are popularity contests. Birdman and Hawking are popular, Benedict & Turing are not. Eddie has been campaigning 24/7 forever now. Benedict doesn't care about that. I actually thought that Benedicts performance was the best of the year. Had so much abstract and layers going on within restraint. But if you want an award you have to be ''in your face''. Multi layered and subtle performances usually aren't awarded because of that.

Hmm, I saw Theory Of Everything and thought Redmayne was really good as Hawking, but that Cumberbatch's Turing was the superior performance... which I thought aligned with critical/media consensus. Looks like I'm a little out of the loop. (A badge I'll happily wear with pride. )

Redmaynes Oscar buzz might get hurt a little now with Jupiter Ascending in cinemas. It's not his fault but I can see the Academy thinking 'Are we really willing to give an award to one of the stars of this movie?'

After looking at the original Strange comics, I never realized how much Cumberbatch does look like Strange back when he was drawn in the 60s. The face is almost uncanny, so I do see why he was kinda chosen in that regard.

Cumberbatch beat out Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke for the role. Clearly Marvel and the director see Cumberbatch as the right guy for the Doctor Strange they want to make.
