No Sequels, Prequels, Threequels, or reboots. The films in the poll are or are considered the first major film of their respective film series.

And yes, several MCU movies are in the poll. While they are part of the wider MCU franchise, they are also a franchise unto themselves.

Spiderman 2002. I love this movie and I think it holds up quite well. It's the first comicbook movie I watched. I also prefer it to the sequel, but that's a discussion for another time.

In terms of iconography, you really can't beat either STM, B89, SM1, or Avengers.

Batman
Spider-Man
Dr. Strange

On mobile so can't see the poll at the moment, will have to vote later.

And I voted for Raimi's Spider-Man. As Batmannerism said below, the movie is a leap from what came before it. And arguably sets the stage for the MCU down the line.

I went with Iron Man as it kick started not just the IM movies but the MCU as well.

STM and Spider-Man 2002 are close runners up.

I went with Guardians of the Galaxy. It is just so immensely entertaining.

I've gotta go with Hellboy. It's a cocktail of stuff I like: a trio of very likeable heroes, at least one neat villain (Kronen) and some practical SFX with the Sammael that still hold up today.

I'm still disappointed they never made Hellboy III.

I have to go with the 2002 Spider-Man.

In that case, I'd have to go with Captain America:TFA. I still think Avengers is the crowning jewel of comic book films, but it kind of blurs the lines as to whether it's a "first installment".

Just a thought. While I think it's a great question for a thread, I'm assuming the question is "which is the best 1st installment of a series, compared to the 1st installments of other series?"

Having said that, I don't feel right about including Deadpool, Dr Strange or Guardians of the Galaxy - as they aren't series yet (well, GOTG will be soon).

If I could vote multiple times it would be a three-way tie between:

Superman the Movie ( it kick-started the whole genre)

Iron Man ( easily the best origin film of the 21st century so far, but for Dr Strange)

Spider Man ( it was a quantum leap forward in special effects and at last produced a credible big-screen Spidey).

The Crow gets honourable mention, although sadly it would have been better if they'd just stopped with that film and not made any more - as the rest are awful.

VERY tough choice, but for it's between Hellboy, Kick-Ass, GOTG, Avengers, Batman Begins, The Crow and Spiderman!

So yeah, half the poll!

1) Man of Steel
2) Guardians of the Galaxy
3) The Avengers
4) Doctor Strange
5) Iron Man

Superman , Best CBM from DC

Spiderman , Best CBM from Marvel

Superman the Movie or Spider-Man 2002. Too close to call.

Superman the Movie, Batman Begins, Men in Black, and Captain America The First Avenger come to mind.

I'll go with Superman the Movie for its awesomeness and great impact on cinema and comic books as a whole.

Superman (1978), without it, we'd have nothing today, it set the tone for all that has followed.

I said The Avengers. I see a few missing from the poll, but none that would get any votes, so no biggie.

The Avengers was a game changer. Especially as a "1st installment." Runners up would be Doctor Strange and Deadpool. Also game changers, but not quite to the same scale as The Avengers.

Tie between The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy for me. Went with the latter, because it has bigger heart, 70s feel and it just came out of knowhere.

I go with the Guardians. Didnt know them before the film and after 2h I fall totally in love with them.
