Ive never known very much about Green Lantern but from the little that Ive heard over the last year the concept sounds great, and now that there's a section on the board for GL himself can anyone tell me good stories to start with to get to see what Green Lanterns all about?

i've been loving everything since Rebirth. the o'neil/adams GL/GA stories are great as well.

If you really want to read some old stories of the character, get the Green Lantern Archives. I would suggest you check it out at your public library. The current run from Rebirth on forward is very well written for a more mature audience and should be good reading. You can get those story arcs (Rebirth, No Fear, Revenge of the Green Lanterns, Wanted - Hal Jordan, The Sinestro Corps War, Secret Origins, and Rage of the Red Lanterns) from Amazon.com.

Also, Emerald Dawn I and II though not in continuity really after Secret Origins are still both really good Hal stories. If you want to learn a bit about Kyle, I recommend New Dawn, Emerald Knights, and Brother's Keeper as his best trades.

Is Secret Origins good? I'm thinking about getting it.

I personally prefer the Emerald Dawn mini's for Hal's origin. But to each their own.

Aight. I can never find Emerald Dawn at the book store. (I usually just go to Barnes and Noble's for comics) but I'll go to my cbs this weekend, and check out Emerald Dawn.

I really liked Secret Origins. Only jumping onto Green Lantern at the tail-end of Sinestro Corps War, Secret Origins was really where I started picking up the title monthly, so served as my proper introduction to Hal.

It starts off very strong, I think. Before I read the GL movie script, I thought this arc would be the perfect basis for an origin film. It basically reads like Green Lantern: The Movie. But the problem with Secret Origins is, continuing the movie analogy, there's not really a third act. Things taper out rather than escalating into an explosive climax like you might expect.

However, the solid characterisation - and particularly, the uniformly excellent art by Ivan Reis - makes Secret Origins a very easy recommendation, in my opinion.

The first Green Lantern related comic I read was J. M. DeMatteis' Spectre series, with Hal Jordan. Recently I picked up Rebirth and the first 10 issues of the current series at a local con, and I'm hooked, trying to find anything with GL. I had a weird GL/Superman comic awhile back where they were in Hell, but can't remember what happened to it, but it was excellent as well.

I agree with you, G.Johns is good but I think it is too "small" just to read his stuff. There are a lot of good stories, and personally, the old stuff makes me laugh out loud sometimes, and I enjoy the potential of these old stories. Not all of course. And I think G.Johns has not only done good stories. some were a bit average.
I'm not talking from a "best GL stories" point of view but an overall point of view.

Yep. Me too, his GL run'll go down in history with Miller's Daredevil and Moore's Swamp Thing as one of the all time great runs.
I'm certain of it.

Yeah of course, I agree but I was saying that there are other good stories and if one is interested , it is always good to see things "out of the G.Johns box".
And I was saying that all he does is not gold. the Star sapphire run was weaker than the rest, and for my part Rage of the Red Lantern was weak too. the only good things in these are that the characters HE created evolve (Atrocitus) or are part of a bigger scope. I enjoyed some parts of Rage of the RL because it was art of something bigger and because I enjoy Atrocitus but the story was really weak IMO.
I think that his idea will really shine as "important" if Atrocitus or Larfleeze are still good characters in 15 years. Now they fulfill what they are supposed to fulfilled in the G.Johns story so it may be a bit prematurated to assume everything is gold. Am I clear ? :O
I enjoy what he writes and I love it for the most part, I was just saying some part are weaker and others books are good too.

By the way, I was not thrilled by Miller's run on Daredevil. I find it important but not that good. The kevin Smith / Quesada run was better in my opinion.

Guardian Devil was a great run. I need to go back and reread that...

As for GL, I only got into the character recently, so I only have Rebirth through the recent issues, all of which I have enjoyed and Hal has quickly become one of my favorite characters at DC.

Don't forget Secret Origins, Rage of the Red Lanterns, Agent Orange...
