I think Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams are the only composers that I know of that write movie theme tunes. Other composers only write movie scores. I can think of few movie theme tunes not writen by these two. If you can't play the music on the radio and have everyone in the room know the movie it's not a theme tune it's a movie score.

Just my personal views.

Respectable.

I guess I have the same view, but if a movie has a main score (I.E. Jaws dun dun dun dun dun) then I consider that the main musical theme of the movie.

here are some alternate ones most people won't bring up

top gun
the last samurai
thomas crown affair
the big lebowski
from dusk till dawn

But that is my point. If Jaws came on the radio, everyone would know it (I'd hope) and so it is a theme tune.

I've heard a few people comment on how good Captain America's score is but I don't think it has a theme tune. I didn't walk out of the cinema humming it. If someone even mentions Superman to me I find it hard not start humming the theme from the Superman: The Movie.
