Venom, though not the arch enemy, is still dangerous in his own right. The symbiote knows all of Parker's secrets in a way no other villain can. It is very personal in Spider-man life.

This wasn't Spidey's first defeat, as so many claim; it was his first time getting thoroughly OWNED.
And, might I add, Ock was able to do this without any trickery or sneaking up on him.
He did a long time ago, back when Ditko was the artist. He snuck up on Spidey, knocked him out and dropped him into a water tower to drown. When did Vulture ever manage to sneak up on him? I remember during the whole "everybody knows who I am" debacle, Vulture was hired to go after him by the government, & he hung back b/c he didn't want Parker to sense his presence & reverse the ambush.
1-I'd say Norman is privvy to a LOT of Spidey's secrets & has a longer standing in that regard.
2-what has Venom done with that knowledge? Nothing. Spooked MJ, roughed up Black Cat, helped Aunt May fold her laundry. The Goblin was the first villain-to my knowledge-to ever invade ANY hero's personal life, making Venom's intrusions look weak by comparison.

Didn't say it made him the arch rival, it may not be useful for him, but it's just a personal connection to Parker that is higher than most villains, I would say.
I forgot all about that.
How'd Toomes manage to sneak up on him? Or were his reflexes not as sharp in his rookie year?
He essentially stole Spidey's underwear. That's not the kind of connection he has to Norm & Otto; both of these men are, in many ways, who Peter Parker could have been & in many ways they're who he aspires to be. Take away the crime, the evil, the insanity-whatever you wanna call it. Peter Parker would love to be Norman Osborn; a self-made man who turned his love of science into a billion-dollar empire. And he'd be just as happy leaving his mark on the world of science, as Otto Octavius has done. He couldn't give a rat's ass about being an effective journalist-which Eddie Brock wasn't.
My son asked if Brock chose the name "Venom" b/c the suit's actually poisoning him. I found that an interesting take.
You of all people should know that there is more to it than that. The black suit knew everything about Parker. More than any villain ever, except maybe one that could mind-read. It shared all his emotions, and thoughts. Maybe not the most important factor, but you can't deny it was one of the deepest connections one could undergo with.
Curt Conners is a Scientist also, and a failure at that, he could also mirror Parker's motivations too, he work for the better good for crying out loud. That doesn't, however make him the one of the top three.
Ahhh, a fantastic moment from an amazing issue. At That moment, I feel that I was in shock with Spidey, especially the first time I read it. Really a surprising moment. With my username, my vote should be obvious...

It was a parasite that acted like a jilted lover. It's just that Brock is such a ludicrous character. And he got so overused in the 90's that by 2000 I was just sick of him. I actually like him more in the movie than in comics.

I also hate that Venom seemed to bring out the worst in Peter. Cowardice, first of all. Spidey has taken on far more threatening villains & never once backed down from any of them, but he was always trying to run & hide from Venom. And then making deals with him? Yeah, "With great power comes great responsibility" sounds a lot like "Agree to let a murderous psychopath roam free" & "Repeatedly ally myself with said psychopath."
