This year, movies like The Irishman, Gemini Man and Captain Marvel will all rely heavily on deaging technology for more than half the film. These are risky choices, as no one is usually deaged for more than a few minutes.

These are a few of my favourite uses of the technique:

Kurt Russell in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2

Sean Young in Blade Runner 2049

Michelle Pfeiffer in Ant-Man and The Wasp

And even though the film isn’t out, Samuel L Jackson looks great in Captain Marvel

I’m intrigued to see how everything turns out this year for Captain Marvel, Gemini Man, and especially, The Irishman!

If he consistently looks as good the whole movie as he does in previews, Samuel L. Jackson in Captain Marvel I think is the best yet.

Sean Young in Blade Runner 2049 was pretty much perfect. Definitely better than the similar work they did with Peter Cushing in Rogue One.

Kurt Russell looked good in GOTG2 but his young self wasn't onscreen long. I thought Robert Downey Jr. looked good in the flashback in Civil War, but maybe a little too smooth, which is a common problem with this kind of effect.

I thought Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Laurence Fishburne in the Ant-Man movies were all a little off.

Michael Douglas in Ant-Man looked good, but he didn't look like any Michael Douglas that ever existed. He was a more streamlined version, as if they extrapolated Douglas as he is now (having lost weight due to illness) and projected it backwards to the 1980s.

The real 1980s version of Douglas had more of a double chin and a puffier, fuller face. His hair was also not as straight as that but more wavy, but sometimes slicked back as well. And his parting was in the centre, not to the side.

If they gave him the slightly puffier face and double chin, and the wavier hair, then he really would've looked like 80s Michael Douglas.

I thought all the Marvel de-aging felt off. Captain Marvel Samuel L Jackson looks good through.

I don’t know if any has really been nailed yet. Maybe it’s because we know what the actors looked like young and there’s something always plastic about it.

With that said, I anxiously await to see what Scorsese does with the technology.

And Gemini Man should be interesting.

Could be because the actors want to be airbrushed or improved upon like the equivalent of live-action Photoshop instead of making them look like what they actually looked like.

Even though it’s not from a film, I really thought Anthony Hopkins looked great in the flashback for that one episode of Westworld.

Russell in GotG2 was pretty much flawless in my book.

Personally thought the Cushing 'work' in R1 was fantastic. Maybe it was because I had 'bought in' too it so much I don't know and I loved seeing the character on screen again, but thought the visuals worked exceptionally well.

It hasn't aged well at all for me. And Leia is even worse. Borderline horrific.

I liked seeing Tarkin again in Rogue One, but something felt very off.

I haven't watched the film (R1) since the cinema so in saying it's aged badly in the 2-3 years I couldn't give a view as such, but at the time I thought it was solid. That being said, it's an area of SFX that makes significant improved advancements quickly so yep, its why some think it may have aged badly. In that the MCU have basically cornered the market in this area. Also thought Rachel in BR2049 was on point as well.

Fair enough!

Okay, I thought Atwell as Peggy in that moment was make up and prosthetics, that's my winner.

It's gotta be Peggy... I legitimately thought it was prosthetics.

Prosthetics doesn't normally look like that though. It always looks fake. Are you saying this looked fake?

Peggy got it. That was prosthetics for sure I thought.
