The runners up for Best of 2006 would be:
Inside Man - really enjoyable heist film, with good acting and good plot.. Not exactly 'great' but entertaining.
Pirates of the Carribean 2 - Was a shock. I very cynical (as is the film) thinking this would be Disney Execs way of showing how "Down wih Depp" they were. It probably was, but the film is somehow, STILL, supremely fun, especially compared the rest of the crap this summer (Superamn Lifts, Mission Impssoble 3) .
The Departed - close to perfect, Leonardo DiCaprio was fantastic as was Mark Wahlberg, but Jack nicholson and the rushed third act slightly marred it
Brokeback Mountain -very,very impressive. Great prerformances as expeced, and it annoyed quite a few people which is even better. Watched it in March and it took till October for it to be surpassed.
But, by quite some distance, the best film this year is
Children of Men. It's not out in the US yet, but when it is you
really should do yourself a favoiur and watch it. It's incredibly good.
If Alfonso Cuaron isn't nominated for direction, considering Spielberg was for Private Ryan and Scott was for Black Hawk Down, there's no justice in the world:
