just watched it loved it all the main leads were great and I loved the songs from past films showing up and the score while not done by Faltermeyer the guy who did it did a good job nice call backs to BHC 2 for example.

Yeah I was going to say, Lorne Balfe did a great job on this score. Movie was a lot of fun!

30 mins in. A) Good to see Eddie back in eddie murphy mode again. B) was so happy they needle dropped Bob Seger’s “Takedown.” I love that song more than I should.

also love the return of the crappy blue chevy nova although it is a LOT less crappy :hehe:

This movie was a return to form that thankfully was more faithful to The first film as well as call backs to the second. Thank goodness it’s not a train wreck like coming 2 America or BHC 3. I enjoyed watching this a lot the jokes were on point and the action was nostalgic.

Speaking of Nostalgia

Ok that was a blast. This movie was basically the Bad Boys For Life of the franchise. Breathed new life into it. Not all the jokes landed but we finally have an Eddie Murphy that gives a s*** again. You can tell he put real effort into this. Axel felt like Axel again but still older and more mature. He had some laugh out loud lines in this.

The action was surprisingly good and engaging, the returning characters were all a joy to watch and the SCORE! Lorne Balfe is officially my favorite working movie composer, he's been doing some banger work these past few years on big action franchises and this is one of his best work yet. He REALLY channels Faltermeyer's feel and sound of Beverly Hills Cop II and remixes it perfectly. I was jamming to the score throughout the whole movie.

Highly entertaining movie. Glad this was not a repeat of Coming 2 America.

I liked all the meta jokes like JGL saying his 94 visit wasn’t his finest hour and Foley saying “F it I’m tired” in the middle of pretending to be someone else at the hotel desk

I just finished it.

I'm glad it's getting great reviews, I thought Eddie looked amazing and he still has his spark, but I thought this movie was corny as hell.

Maybe it's because I wasn't a super huge fan of the Beverly Hills Cop movies so the callbacks were lost on me, but I really found this to be meh. In my honest opinion, the last three times Eddie was HILARIOUS was in Norbit, Dolemite and that SNL appearance.

But again, I'm glad everyone is digging it.

To be quite honest, I'm happy the movie doesn't take itself too seriously and knows exactly what kind of sequel it is. This isn't like the recent Ghostbusters that puts the original in this huge pedestal and it's constantly trying to be worthy with "legacy seriousness".

BHC: Axel F is a sequel that could've easily been made in the late 90's, not only in tone, but also in the way it handles action and score. Even some camera movements and shots felt very old school.

They were not trying to reinvent the wheel with the previous sequels and I'm glad time has not affected how a BHC sequel should look or feel like.
Is not a perfect movie, but it is perfectly adequate in what is trying to achieve.

The movie not taking itself too seriously was definitely one of its better aspects, but still there's a way to do it without feeling corny. IMO the jokes didn't land the way they should've, the way they littered the dialogue with f bombs wasn't all that funny either and it feels like they had a germ of a good idea but the script didn't really build on it.

However
I did like the last action sequence with the shootout in the mansion. It was fun.

But yeah, not my favorite Eddie flick though.

If this has enough good reception they might find themselves a bit more confident going forward. A sequel 30 years later (specially an action/comedy hybrid) is hard already as it is.
Maybe I'm a bit more forgiving in certain aspects, I'm not trying to discredit anyone. I had fun with it much like the previous ones (yes, even III) and that's all I was looking for, really.

Its a shame this didnt get a shot in theaters. It would have been a banger at the box office i feel cuz its a crowd pleaser. It would have made Bad Boys money.

My understanding of the general consensus is that the film is not as good as the first one and definitely not as bad as the third one, but how do you guys feel it fares compared to the second one?

Goes to show how we don’t have any real singers anymore.

Ms Patti gave us a classic on the first movie’s soundtrack with ‘Stir It Up’, would’ve been nice to have a song for this new movie too.

I would say this is definitely the third best, but its not far behind #2 which I actually think is my favorite BHC movie. I just loved Tony Scott and Faltameyer's mood and vibe in that movie. Axel F is FAR above BHC 3 though, a worthy successor to the first two even if not AS good.

I'm in the minority in the way that I like all sequels almost equally. The first one is the best, and then I can easily watch any of the other three.
II is an 80's movie on steroids and it has a lot of the trademarks that we associate with a BHC movie.
III is different and I like it because of that, the setting is a turn off for almost everybody but I find myself enjoying the slightly change of tone. I never understood the hate.
IV feels, in some ways, like a true sequel to the first one, specially in the way everyone has evolved. II is too close and too similar to the first one.

Would you all think less of me if I told you that my first thought upon seeing the helicopter scene was “Thank God they didn’t get Landis back for this one”?

I really enjoyed this. Took it back to basics.

Murphy's energy and obvious enthusiasm to be back in the role was a big plus. I enjoyed seeing all the Beverly Hills Cop royalty back again from Taggart to Serge. I just wish Billy had been utilized more. JGL's character and Axel's daughter were both good additions to the cast, and it added a dimension to Foley seeing him deal with a personal relationship. Kevin Bacon did fine as the villain. Nobody can say the BHC movie villains are fleshed out characters. So I won't criticize for them continuing that tradition.

The jokes mostly landed for me (I laughed out loud at JGL's character making the little dig at Axel's 1994 visit to Beverly Hills not being his finest hour). Great action sequences. Loved the soundtrack.

This one is a W.

I'm down for a 5th (and preferably final) installment to close the series out. Eddie seems game for it so long as the script's good.

I had a lot of fun with this. Great to see Eddie Murphy back on form. I missed the Foley/Rosewood dynamic for much of the movie, but everything else really clicked for me.

This is how you do a legacy sequel. A reflective Axel, without going full on Old Man Logan.

As much as I wish this got a theatrical release, I’m enjoying being able to rewatch whenever I want

I’m with you. Except I will go a bit further and say I don’t see III as all that different either, although it would have been better with Taggart in it. They don’t really mess with the premise or tone that much in any of the films. There is nothing like Mission Impossible 2 which is just completely out there and wacky compared to the others.

And the fourth fits right in with that, and I appreciate that. It is comfort food. I can say “yep, that’s a perfectly fine Beverly Hills Cop movie.”

Well... the third one doesn't feel too Beverly Hills-ish for me, if that makes sense. He is also mostly by himself. Those are the things that stood out for me on my latest rewatch that set it apart from I & II.
This is a weird comparison, but is like Temple of Doom. It's different from Raiders and Crusade, mostly set in one location rather that going from place to place and that's what makes it interesting. Is like an alternate version of an Indy movie or, in this case, a Beverly Hills Cop movie.
