Birds of Prey Birds of Prey General Discussion and Speculation

I thought this movie was... alright. It's not a mindblowing movie and I wouldn't consider it to be a "must watch" movie. However its fun if you don't take it seriously even though you could argue that its a good Harley Quinn movie but a terrible Birds of Prey movie. Margot Robbie's performance as Harley was easily the highlight of this movie and I thought Huntress was cool.
Was 'that rumour' about Black Mask's pics true?

Most of the moves WB make are in partnership with other production houses like Village Roadshow, Legendary Entertainment, Tencent Pictures, Wanda Media, they don't do anything creative, they just provide the financing. I don't know if they qualify as "Vulture Capitalists".

I assume this applies to studios like Sony, Universal and Paramount who also have co-financiers as well. The truth is movies cost a lot of money and apart from Disney, many studios have financiers to help shoulder the risk.

Recent success "Joker" was partly financed by Village Roadshow Pictures (25%) and BRON Studios (25%) and WB (50%), even though the budget was only $62.5M.

These other "production studios" are really just movie financing companies, they are not stake holders in Intellectual property (which basically means, they don't possess the characters rights or the movie making rights to Joker or any other DC characters).

Edit: So, there's no question of selling off rights to these "Vulture Capitalists". (And I doubt they are Vulture Capitalists in first place.)

Pretty sure the same situation can be applied here with LuckyChap Entertainment, Kroll & Co Entertainment & Clubhouse Pictures all listed as production companies.

for sure and people questioning her comedy check out that movie she did with Tina Fey yes not that successful but she kept up comedy wise with Fey
Do you know what film that is? I wouldn’t mind checking that out.

You're happy to see something you haven't even seen fail? And you automatically assume that it's all part of a scheme to sell off the IP?

Good lord, (gratitiously petty, paranoid and unrealistic) statements and assumptions such as this are part of why I have a problem with the Internet.
it's a movie. It doesn't matter that much.

I prefer that Harley earned her qualifications legitimately because it makes her a more impressive villain. Being an intelligent psychiatrist, able to analyse people and predict their patterns and target their psychological weaknesses makes her a greater threat.
Imagine if it turned out Scarecrow, Mr Freeze or Hugo Strange didn't earn their qualifications but just seduced their professors. Reducing their accomplishments reduces their power.
I don't think that's a strong comparison. I think those characters are more tied to what they do. Even on her own based on what I've seen I think Harley is more played for her goofiness and/or physical abilities. But I remember, though I could be wrong, that Harley doing that wasn't due to her lack of abilities in it.

The only downside I can see at the moment - and I don't know if anyone else feels this - is over-exposure. I'm starting to get that 'Her, again?' feeling when I hear her name - and I like her! Maybe it's just me. I get the same thing with Dwayne Johnson.

Haha won’t be overexposed if the box office continues to be like this

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

stupid title but I enjoyed it Martin Freeman is in it aswell
I'm a Tina Fey mark so I enjoy everything she's in but I found the movie good and criminally underrated

The more i think about this movie the more surprised i am that this was so warmly accepted by critics. Its such a wacky, offbeat film, I’m surprised this wasnt more divisive amongst the more stingy “i dont care about comic books” film critics. Meanwhile, the actual geeky critics, your Stuckmanns, you Jeremy Jahnses, your Tryone Magnuses, a lot of these guys didnt like this movie.

Just curious, what do you guys think is the x factor here?

Comic book fans have different expectations.

Margot got this movie green-lighted, WB/DC never had any plans for either Harley Quinn solo movie or BoP move or a combination of the two.

I find it odd that despite the fact that Margot gave a good performance and gave Harley Quinn character progression arc, some people do not have anything positive to say about it.

I thought that the fight scenes were good (for the most part,) the soundtrack, musical score and cinematography are above average, I have some complaints too but overall, the positive aspects outweigh the negative aspects.

The incredible and increasingly worse close-mindedness of online comic book nerds. As much as we don't like the stereotypes attached to us comic book fans, the most of us prove that The Simpsons' Comic Book Guy is an accurate depiction of the majority of us.

Very true, while people are entitled to their views, people like Stuckmann and Jeremy Jahns (and others like Grace) come across as close minded.

Personally thought there were peaks and valleys.

Agree 100% concerning the evidence room fight scene that was super inventive and the best use of a baseball bat I have ever seen in a live action fight scene. Her almost Daredevil-esque moment of bouncing it off the ground in to one of the goons was awesome.

But then there is the final fight at the fun house that I have to be honest I thought was pretty darn awful, it just felt jarring and it just didn't come off as very good at all imo, like I think some of the scenes and different props were meant to play for laughs I think but they largely just fell really flat in my screening.

I will have you know I look nothing like comic book guy lol and found the movie average at best.

I dont know if i’d say that. Stuckmann and Jahns in general are in general very easy going on most of the cbms BECAUSE theyre fans. I think Stuckmann gave Justice League a B. I would think theyre more prone to like this movie.

Welp, I'm doing my part and heading for a 2nd viewing this afternoon. All we fans can do is keep supporting it and hope it can find a 2nd life either through surprisingly long legs at the box office or on blu-ray/streaming.

Bingo.

The mainstream critics just want a good movie. Whatever kind of movie that is. Geek fans want a good movie that falls in line with what they know of the comics/characters. Like I’ve seen a ton of fans complaining how they butchered Cassie Cain and seemingly based their whole opinion of the movie around that feeling. Which is fine - we all have different things we’re looking for in a movie. But the regular critics don’t care one iota about that. At all. Plus, I mentioned this a few days ago, but I think given the state of CBM’s today vs how they were 20+ years ago, CBM fans want their CBM’s to be a certain kind of way these days because of how long it took for what they like to get taken seriously by the mainstream. So any movie that doesn’t toe the current genre line (and I think WW84 might fall into this category as well) is gonna get sneered at by a certain portion of the CBM fandom, regardless of its overall quality.
