Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

So, the latest B.O. numbers for 2020 -

1. Bad Boys for Life $425.5 million
2. Sonic the Hedgehog $306.7 million
3. Dolittle $227.9 million
4. Birds of Prey $203.9 million
5. The Invisible Man $124.5 million
6. The Call of the Wild $107.6 million
7. Onward $104 million
8.Bloodshot $29.75 million

In terms of ratio of (Worldwide Box Office / Movie's budget)

1. The Invisible Man $124.5 million
($124 M/ Budget $7 M) = 17.78

2. Bad Boys for Life $425.5 million
($425.4 M / Budget $90 M) = 4.72

3. Sonic the Hedgehog $306.7 million
($306.7 M/Budget $85 M) = 3.6

4. Birds of Prey $203.9 million
($203.9 M/ Budget $84.5 M) = 2.41

5. Dolittle $227.9 million
($227.9 M/ Budget $175 M) = 1.3

6. The Call of the Wild $107.6 million
($107.6 M/ Budget $135 M) = 0.79

7. Bloodshot
($29.75 M/ Budget $45 M) = 0.66

8. Onward $104 million
($104 M/ Budget $175 M) = 0.59

So, Disney's The Call of the Wild and Onward, Universal's Dolittle and Bloodshot are the biggest flops of 2020.

Which isn't exactly fair for all those movies. Bloodshot came out in the midst of this pandemic. I'm not saying it would have made so much more, but most of those movies up until Sonic probably would have made the same.

Bloodshot was looking to be a bit of a sleeper hit following its opening weekend, but then all the cinema's everywhere closed.

I watched it on PSStore at the weekend and it wasn't very good, far inferior to BoP. But with its low budget, Bloodshot may have got a sequel and made a decent profit without this virus.

Its not like the lead character of those films appeared in a film that grossed over $700 million worldwide in 2016.

Again, this is another example of you of trying to bring down other movies to make it look like as if Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey performed so much better at the box office!

You might as we bring up Elektra, Catwoman and Supergirl next.

Studios do take into account the movie's budget while evaluating the movie's performance at money earned at Box Office, apart from that,

Birds of Prey is now doing well at online VoD and rentals, then there are revenues Studios get from merchandise and sales of Bluray and DVDs. Everything will be factored in (along-with Rotten Tomatoes ratings) while evaluating Birds of Prey's performance.

I agree that the movie under-performed and it's Box Office collection is disappointing, but it's not anywhere close to Elektra or Catwoman or even Supergirl. And since you brought up Elektra and Catwoman...

Elektra (2005)

Budget: $43M
Worldwide $57 M

($57 M/ Budget $43 M) = 1.32

Catwoman (2004)

Budget: $100 M
Worldwide $82M

($82 M/ Budget $100 M) = 0.82

BoP's ratio of (Worldwide Box Office / Movie's budget) is better than The Incredible Hulk(2008) and Ang Lee's HULK (2003)

The Incredible Hulk(2008)

($265 M/ Budget $150 M) = 1.76

Ang Lee's HULK (2003)

($245M/ Budget $137 M) = 1.78

Again, BoP under performed and had a disappointing Box Office, I think it was below Studios expectations but it was not a bomb like Elektra, Catwoman or Hellboy (2019) or Bloodshot (2020)

I wouldn't say BoP was a bomb, but it's only doing well again on Digital because they reduced the price quite a lot. Overall it's just a disappointment but may become a bit of a cult hit in the lead up to TSS.

I doubt that Marvel Studios thought The Incredible Hulk (2008) bombed or Fox Studios thought that X-Men: First Class (2011) bombed as they continued with their franchises even after disappointing numbers.
Ratio of (Worldwide Box Office / Movie's budget) for TIH and X-Men FC is lower than what we have for BoP, while I don't expect WB to make a sequel to BoP, I don't think Under-performing movie is same as Bomb.

Birds of Prey
Worldwide : $204 million
Budget $85 M
Ratio of (Worldwide Box Office / Movie's budget)
($204 M/ Budget $85 M) = 2.4

X-Men: First Class (2011)
Worldwide : $352 M
Budget: $160 M

Ratio of (Worldwide Box Office / Movie's budget)
($352 M/ Budget $160 M) = 2.2

The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Worldwide : $265 M
Budget: $150 M
Ratio of (Worldwide Box Office / Movie's budget)
($265 M/ Budget $150 M) = 1.76

When TIH came out, it was the 19th highest grossing CBM of all time.

And there's probably at least over 50 something CBM released by that time.

All Time Worldwide Box Office for Super Hero Movies

It was a different time and since then MCU hasn't released a movie that grossed in the 200s again.

Sure, those movies weren't judged as under-performing movies by the Studios (X-Men FC and TIH) because Studios were satisfied with their earnings, different time, different expectations, which is why I said BoP is not likely to get a sequel.

But Tomb Raider (2018) is getting a sequel despite earning only $274 M with a budget of $94 M.

If we compare Tomb Raider with Birds of Prey, we have to consider the fact that BoP was not released in China. So after subtracting the money Tomb Raider earned in China ($274 M - $ 78 M) = $ 196 M

($196M/ Budget $94 M) = 2.08

Which shows that despite performing poorly than BoP, it is getting a sequel, that is, the franchise is still going on.

Finally, just to give examples of movie bombs, look at Terminator Dark Fate and Star Wars SOLO. (I don't even need to give any numbers here.)

You might as well bring up Elektra, Catwoman and Supergirl next.
Lord, I was being sarcastic and he didn't waste no time bringing up other movies again, to make Birds of Prey look better. Geez.

Really @Micromind what medal should Birds of Prey get everytime you bring down another movie's boxoffice numbers?

But it just seems like it's trying to put lipstick on a pig. Whether it's disappointing or a bomb, as of right now it doesn't seem likely to get a sequel. Trying to analyze marketing vs. grosses with movies that were released 9 to 17 years ago, just seems like making BOP seem like more ofa win or not as bad as people are saying.

And in regards to Tomb Raider, that's a separate franchise with only one entry. WB taking a hit with BOP, but I'm sure WW84, The Batman and even TSS will do better so they don't have to take a chance on a BOP sequel. There might not be a Solo sequel, but Rise of Skywalker grossed over $1B. I think that's the difference with BOP.

So, BoP has earned $24 million (rounded off approximation) from Blu-ray and DVD sales in US. Worldwide Bluray (and DVD) sales numbers are not available.

Also, it did well on VoD segment, as it was in top 5 VoD movies on iTunes.

$24 mil. from DVD and Blu-ray sales in US, does not seem to bad at all, considering very popular movies like Sonic the Hedgehog and Shazam earned about $29 mil. in US.

Oh, good to hear.

lol the number of Spidey and Avenger films, I wonder if Harley just peggybacked on Joker thanks to the recommendation function :funny:

If WB hadnt screwed Harley/Joker from the start....a Harley/Joker rampage movie probably would be a big hit.
