Birds of Prey Birds of Prey General Discussion and Speculation

Seeing BoP a day in advance (Thursday here, Wednesday in NA).

A user on BOT is able to see the first 7 Critics Choice votes but he said after that it's hard to find out

In no order:

100, 90, 80, 80, 75, 70, 50
Well that's a spectrum!

A friend of a friend of mine saw it and has been raving about it to him for days, but he says that friend also generally has really weird taste, lol.

Seeing it tomorrow.

I’m happy this is getting good reviews! Hope we get a sequel.

I didn’t think the promotional materials made the movie look good, but I’m glad the actual movie is well received.

Now I'm actually really looking forward to seeing this and will do so either tomorrow or Friday. To me it's just crazy how good the reviews are for this while the marketing has been sorely lacking IMO. This definitely sounds like a case of the trailers not doing the movie any justice.

In my opinion, the movie and the marketing are not anything different; there's no disconnect or anything misleading about the promotion. If you dislike the marketing, then it's likely you're not going to like the movie. It's odd to change a tune about a movie as soon as "the establishment" tells you it's okay to like it and then blame the marketing.

While I kind of agree...it is also vastly different when you see everything together. There are movies with really tight trailers but fall apart when you watch the actual movie. Seeing this movie in its entirety will likely cause different reactions from doubters since they are seeing the full story.

I'd agree if the complaints had been largely about story. However, most have been about aesthetics and fidelity to the source material. Those things were fairly obvious from the promotion and aren't going to change in the film.

That is not true. I disliked completely Joker's marketing and loved the film.
I loved the marketing of SS and disliked the film.
I loved the marketing for AoU, but was disappointed with the villain, due to the misleading marketing.

In some occasions, there can be a huge disconnection between the promotion for a film and the actual end product.

I booked my tickets long ago, im a sucker for dc and would go see this even if the ratings were terrible XD Friday is the day

From what I am reading the trailers absolutely did the film justice and represented it to a "T". What seems to be at issue is that a lot of people didnt want this movie as is (Harley Quinn featuring the BOP) so they shut themselves out to the film and wanted to wait to see if others liked it before they let themselves warm to it. Happens all of the time, nothing wrong with being skeptical ESPECIALLY if it is something you hold in high regard like many BOP fans do.

I think another issue is that many fans are still kind expecting the massive marketing campaigns WB was throwing out for movies not that long ago. Under the old regime this film would have been plastered everywhere, with multiple trailers being shown and overly produced. The budget would have been $40-50 million more alone on the backs of said marketing. With the new plan at WB of having smaller budgets for ancillary stories they also tone down the marketing which probably costs them some box office but also makes it easier to green light sequels cause the threshhold is much lower. I mean if this film makes $200 million it makes a profit if the current budget is to be believed. WB seems to be less in the "LETS MAKE A BILLION ON EVERYTHING!!!" mode and more on the "lets just see what connects and THEN blow the doors off this thing" mode.

I know it isnt the BOP of the comics, and I know that ticks people off but Margot could have just made her Harley film and been done with it. She championed this and is about to give those characters more exposure than they ever could have gotten on their own. This is a good thing for the CBMs and the industry as a whole.

Sure, but I'm not talking about other films or story expectations. I'm talking about BOP and the specific complaints leveled against it during its promotion that had all to do with things like the film's aesthetics, fidelity to the comics in terms of looks and characterization, wacky tone, and some people's racist, ageist, and sexist concerns directed at the actresses and the film as a whole. What triggered those concerns didn't magically disappear in the full movie.

So, if one can enjoy the movie in spite of those things, then the complaints were either insincere or overblown to begin with. It's also much easier to fuse together the best bits for a good trailer but for the film to disappoint.

Spot on.

Like it or not, I think the trailers are giving a True representation of the movie.

I haven't seen the movie yet but, they obviously are leaving out certain key scenes, which audiences have to see in the theaters, the problem some have is that they don't want an origin or introduction to Birds of Prey, they want a proper full fledged Birds of Prey movie, with Harley appearing in a guest capacity, which this movie is not.

However, this is first and foremost a Harley Quinn movie, the story is told from her crazy perspective, Margot has even said this in interviews, the Birds of Prey are given an origin and they are in the story but they are not the sole focus of the movie.

People (myself included at one point) just didn't want to give this movie a chance from jump street because of preconceived ideas that this was just Suicide Squad redux, but it's not the case. It's really good for business if this movie succeeds: not only does it have a primarily female cast, but it has black, Latina and Asian actresses in the main cast and has an Asian American female director at the helm. It's the little engine that could.
