I went on a tour in Memphis, to a home that was used in the underground railroad. It's called "Slave Haven". The guide gave us the background on the watermelon. As some of you may know, the slaves slaughtered the animals for the master. The choice parts always went to the master. The feet, intestines, snout, ears, tongue.....basically the garbage, went to the slaves. The Africans did not like the diet they were forced to eat. Melon was known as a cleansing fruit back in the homeland. As a result, they ate as much Watermelon as possible to help in this process.

The master thought the negro to be a stupid animal. But they use to sit on the pot and eat watermelon all day to clean out the junk the master made them eat. It became a stereo type because the white man always saw the slave with a watermelon, but didn't know why. They just thought the slave loved it.

So my history is just a wee bit different. Slaves did get left overs, but everybody ate mostly the same food. When the Portuguese had control they got animals available plus breads and fowl that was imported. Like the mango. Everybody ate that. It was sweet and used as a dessert. When eaten too much, everybody knew what happened.

I hate watermelon. Never liked the texture or the taste. I will always be a mango eater. I was raised on it.

I never really thought that years of teasing would be the result of the difference between African-American and err...Black? What would you call it.

Nu uh. Mango's taste better. Besides there hasn't been a watermelon yet that has made cleaned me out. On the other hand, I can only eat a few slices of mango at a time.

In my afro american history class some of the students began arguing over bet. The white students felt that it was racist to have a channel dedicated to blacks . But if you look at 98% of television it is mostly white. Name one primetime television show with a black lead. And most of the blacks that do make it on television are the lighter ones. What do you guys think?

I think BET is racists because its all black stereotypes all wrapped up in one channel. It's like having a WET where they show Leave it to Beaver, Pleasantville, and Elvis music videos

It's not the point about who has the worst stereoypes, it's that it is a channel dedicated to showing those stereotypes and making it as if that's is how all black,white, asains, redskinned, or hispanic people are like.

Come to think of it, I can't thin of a single black character who has been made out to be a rapist. On CSI and all of those cop dramas it's always the fat middle aged white guy raping and molesting.

The black stereotypes are glorified though, and tell our country's children that's what they should aspire to be. Nobody wants to be the white geek who can't dance.

I do get sick of seeing rap videos where everybody in there is black, and they show one old white guy, or white teenage nerd, or a white teacher made out to be the nerd.

An awful lot of blacks have been on mtv. Ever heard of rap music? during the 90's 90% of the people on there were black. During the 80's it was all the same black guy but he made up 80% of mtv's airtime.

and those other channels are not WET. That's a stupid thing to say.
