Blade Runner 2049 - Part 1

Lars and the Real Girl was the first thing that sold me on Gosling as an actor. Delightful little film and a crushing performance from him.

I think a lot of people associate him with Refn's films, which I like, but there wasn't much to his performances.

I actually thought he was quite good in Crazy, Stupid, Love. Even if the film itself is a bit naff.

Gosling is a great actor but he needs a script to back him up, he is not one of those guys who can give great performance in spite of script being weak. Drive had very simple story but his character was well written, Only God Forgives however was a disaster. But I don't think anyone can argue he is not talented, he was really outstanding in Blue Valentine and Lars and the Real Girl.

However for me he is just so much better in comedies

Gosling also has a sort of subtle, subdued acting style that fits Blade Runner really well I think.

Gosling is great. And he's smart too, for example the "womb" idea from Only God Forgives was his and not Refn's, which really surprised me, since it was one of the psychologically strongest things in the film.

The best movie he's been in so far is The Nice Guys. (with The Place Beyond the Pines being 2nd)

Gosling and Micheal Pitt creeped me out in Murder by Numbers back in the day.

I didn't really pay attention until Blue Valentine. That movie is heartbreaking.

He's pretty good in Half Nelson too.

He was Oscar nominated for 'Half Nelson', so he was more than just pretty good.

Yea, they were creepy in that movie, and their unclear power dynamic (where Gosling seems to dominate Pitt, but actually Pitt manipulates Gosling) and homoerotic undertone was intriguing. They played off each other pretty well.

Btw, why are there people on the internet complaining that this is being made and calling it a cash-grab (ESPECIALLY that troglodyte Razorfist)? Given the talent involved, it doesn't come off as a cash-grab or that it'll such!

I hope this film is going to make enough money so there can be sequels. Even though I'm not the biggest fan of the original Blade Runner I think the world has a lot of potential for great stories, with cool new-noir atmosphere and dreamy synth music. Stories with all those cyberpunk and sci-fi themes, nature of man, of machine, post-modern society, new forms of slavery, dependency on technology, loneliness in the big cities full of nameless crowds, stories taking place in off-worlds, etc. Not to mention it's supposed to share its universe with Alien franchise. I'd love to get some more intellectual noir sci-fi films from BR universe.

I'm on the fence about this movie. It was cool to see a desert wasteland in the trailer, immediately made me think of the book. Hope they expand the universe with more of Phillip K. Dick's ideas.

How can it be a cash grab when Blade Runner has always been a polarising cult film? The name alone isn't a money maker.

Perhaps but its a known name, which is why this kind of thing gets made. Hopefully this goes more the direction of a Fury Road than a Total Recall.

This is gonna end up like tron and tron legacy ppl loved the first 1 and are gonna hate the sequel. Same with Indiana jones loved those old movies but hated crystal skull. The writing is in the sand

it's being written by the same people as the first one as in Hampton Fancher and Ridley Scott and being directed by Denis Villeneuve. So no the writing isn't in the sand. And if you're not aware of who he is, look him up.

Put it this way, I have more confidence in this than Alien Covenant.

I just hope this is gonna be the Gos from Drive and not Only God Forgives. He has the same exact expression on every single still :funny:

There's a difference?

Actually there was one factor, but it's intentional: The Driver had an honor code and is an able fighter, while GOF's Gosling was spineless and maybe a bit more extreme on the autistic level. Plus he's a spineless creepy momma's boy who can't fight.
