Blade Runner 2049 - Part 1

I do agree with Doctor Jones' point about how they should take this opportunity to make this new BR more...accessible. And when I say accessible I do not mean turn it into a generic mainstream blockbuster film, I simply mean make it more tangible and accessible for people to get into. This could be a really cool, dark sci-fi noir, a melding of Arrival and Prisoners, if you will. That's why I think Villaneuve is perfect for this, he knows how to make deliberately paced films but you're never bored throughout his movies because he's so good at building tension and building characters.

I think it'll hit a decent middle ground because, I'll say it again - I think Blade Runner is an acquired taste. I really do. You'd have to be a film fan, or at least appreciate the things it was trying to do, to enjoy or grasp it.

Denis is a smart, smart director and a dude who has a very specific vision.

Since, this is the Blade Runner thread, and not the “people like the new Star Wars movies and it makes me mad” thread, I’d dial this kind of talk back and keep this particular line of thinking to yourself. It’s off-topic, and as we’ve reminded you before, it’s really obnoxious.

I'm using SW as part of a bigger point of Blade Runner which I have been discussing. And even if that includes, yes, harsh criticism of SW (and that post wasn't even directed at anyone here, but the Gareth Edwards types that are stupid) in discussing Blade Runner. If you think otherwise, you're projecting. And "people like the new Star Wars movies and it makes me mad" isn't how I think. That's pretty black and white. You're all putting words in my mouth. I even didn't respond to DS's posts to me, because I wanted to keep things on topic about Blade Runner and not off topic about trolling, which I know for a fact I am not doing.

You're all making this into more about SW than I am. I'm excited about this movie, and if that includes talking about what's wrong with the SW movies in comparison with what this seems to be doing right in order to service talking about Blade Runner, then I don't see how that's wrong. And I will keep doing it. Because there's grounds for it. You don't see me discussing SW where it isn't relevant. When this thread becomes more about SW than Blade Runner because of me, then I will have something to be sorry for.

Star Wars?

You can bash the new SW movies to your heart’s content, but learn how to do it without including comments like this:

This doesn't look like another hunting down of replicants storyline or made by a filmmaker to pander to nostalgic adults by trying to recreate the "feeling of what it was like to see the original Blade Runner when you were a kid." *throws up in mouth*

And no, that’s not me projecting. Several people complained about these comments. I have better things to do than spend time telling someone to knock off the attitude on a message board, but because of that, here we are.

Maybe if you didn’t have a habit of referring to these fans as “salivating sheep” in previous threads, people would take you at your word that you don’t mean it, but you’ve been really bad at this lately. And you’re smarter than that.

If you want to continue this conversation, let’s take it offline so it won’t derail this thread any further. But seriously, find a better way to express this opinion.

The YouTube comments are full of griping about Leto being in the movie. I'm like by that logic you should ***** about Fassbender for Assassin's Creed.

That comment wasn't directed at anyone here. Like I said, it was referring to the mentality of directors like Gareth Edwards in how they approach a beloved property vs someone like Villenueve. I guess some people thought it was aimed at them because I had a negative and harsh thing to say about a Star Wars movie, and that somehow is an insult against them.

And salivating sheep was conflated with my problems with a lot of people at that convention with people on the Hype. That wasn't directed at anyone either, but people decided to take it as being directed at them. I have no regrets about that because it's still true. I will criticize people and the cynicism of a convention if I want. That does not mean I am criticizing people on the Hype.

DJ, I've repeated this before, but you've acted like this before, and I don't understand why are keeping this up. Stay off the grid for a little, and just cool off.

Deakins + Villeneuve + Blade Runner = MAGIC.

Yeah. They seem to have hit all the right buttons for me. The cast is tops and they are for sure with the trailer at least making me feel it's the same world only few decades into the further future. And it already looks gorgeous. The Deakins and Villeneuve combo has me thinking this really does look like a live action anime in all the best ways. Best part... No indication of the precise nature of the story outside of broad strokes.

Like the original this may not be for everyone but it looks worth seeing on the big screen for fans of the Scott original.

my only real impression from this trailer is that Harrison Ford doesn't have a huge part in it.

It's treason, then.

Why should I? I've been calm all day. I still am. People are misreading my posts and thinking I'm insulting them. I was insulting Gareth Edwards, not fans. People see nostalgic adults and assume the sentence was directed at them. Read that sentence carefully.

I'd like to keep talking more about Blade Runner and how excited about it like I've been doing this whole time. Like I have been. Now it's getting off topic and I don't want that.

Weird. Seemed to me he was in every other frame of the trailer...

That said, I do remember reading some rumor that...

he only showed up for one third of the movie.

I don't think that is the same thing. Forget that he went about messing up one of the iconic characters in fiction. He did it while bragging about how zany he was and how it would make the character better. Fassbender was just in a crappy movie.

No people understand that you use the macro sense to avoid targeting individuals, but you have more then implied multiple times what and who you mean. If you like TFA and/or Rogue One, it applies.

So which version of the original is the best in your opinion?

It was funny I watched the trailer the first time and only really saw him in that one scene. Watching it again, it is clear he is in it beyond that. How much, I guess we will see.

Umm..He never said that. I'm pretty sure he said he just went with the method that works best for him.

If anything I think Ayer hyped him up too much and WB clearly led a marketing misdirect. I do agree that Leto should have never said what he was doing on the set. Fans/media got more upset about it than the cast members. Apparently a lot of crazy stuff was happening on the Suicide Squad set that didn't involve Leto.

I'm not sure.....I'll have to watch each version about 20 more times each before I can make up my mind.

Saw this on NeoGAf. Thoughts?
The problem with it looking too clean isn't that it lacks film grain. It's about texture, set decoration, shot composition and mainly just design.

Here's a piece of concept art for Blade Runner 2049

Compare it with Syd Mead's work from the original.

I know neither actually represents what the movies look like, but it shows the amount of thought that went into the little details. And [that to me is representative of the difference in visuals between the two films.

Villeneuve's Blade Runner trailer shows little ambition visually. There's no spectacle to any of it. It's 2017, we can do anything with computers. I wanted to see Syd Mead's cityscapes fully realized in a way that made me feel like it was a real place, and I didn't get any of that from the trailer.

If you promote yourself doing those things, is it not for the benefit of the role?

Oh, watching a whole lot of Blade Runner. This must be torture. Poor Lee. :o

He said the gifts were a gag to pit the "Skwad" against the Joker. Cast mates said that it indeed worked as they really bonded together after that on set.

If the movie turns out to be crap to people its not because of that. In anything it was just a waste of time since they seemed to cut out the other confrontation vs. the Joker.
