.@BladeRunner 2049 is phenomenal. Visually mind-blowing sci-fi w/ noir roots shining through in a tight, twisty mystery. Best of 2017 so far
Denis Villeneuve is unquestionably one of the elite working directors & there's no excuse if Deakins doesn't win the Oscar #BladeRunner2049

Blade Runner 2049 is absolutely loaded with spoilers. Even the plot of the film is a spoiler. If you are going to see it avoid reviews.
Sounds exciting. I'm having a feeling I spoiled the big plot accidentally from a redditor's interpretation of the latest trailer. Which to its credit is damn amazing even just conceptually, but I'd be bummed if I'm coming into it with that as an expectation.

Feels like Vangelis, so it's great.

It's great. Gets darker and more oppressive than Vangelis' more dreamy numbers but still true to his spirit.
It's been ranked on my top 10 since I saw it in June. I've always loved it, but I do think it's basically what pundits were wrongfully trying to label Arrival as. It's a super contemplative slow burn that's devoid of almost any emotional undercurrent.
Found the third act reveal problematic and first act a bit poorly paced (could've been fixed) and maybe slightly overlong, but it's a very moody, brooding, reflective and quiet film. First half is Under the Skin-in a sense with noir-esque elements embedded. Don't think there's a plethora of story nor enough dialogue to justify an adapted screenplay nomination. Not joking how slow of a burn this is (like peak Villenueve on that), I think audiences could give it the cold shoulder if they're going into it expecting a straight sci-for action blockbuster. It's well more arthouse in general feeling than that. It's the type of movie that could have an excellent guild run, but miss out on Best Picture. I would be more confident if we still had a grouping of 10, and Villenueve is definitely possible in director with all these flop awards pictures from the Fall.
That...could be an issue for me. I have a hard time getting into movies where the characters are stoic and dont give you anything emotionally (like Drive, for example) . But, Villaneuve hasn't steered me wrong and I trust him. It's a super contemplative slow burn that's devoid of almost any emotional undercurrent.
The Rachel thing? Something about replicant/human hybrid?
I'm suspicious about these opinions, because Arrival and Sicario were just as praised, but I didn't feel that strong about them. Well, I'm glad it gets glowing previews. Perhaps there's hope.
But what if it's THAT great?
Not yet. But I'm not an anime buff.
I liked some of Japanese animation during the era when it was made with hand-drawn cels. When it went digital, I dropped it entirely.
