Blade Runner 2049

Damn, I've always said I wouldn't get invested in a Blade Runner sequel as I hold the original so dear as a stand alone (top ten all time favorite) and a movie I don't see many ways to do a great sequel to. The very least this long time after.

But now they hire a director I really like...

Ok, so it occurred to me that I've only ever watched the original Blade Runner once like twenty years ago and I wasnt a fan (i was 10). Figure I'd give the film another shot.

That is a common response to seeing Blade Runner. I know a lot of people who didn't like the film the first time they saw it only to watch it again later and really like it.

I think it is a film the kind of grows on you.

It does. It took me like five times to really appreciate it. But the first couple of times it was a meandering bore. I still don't love the film but I get what Scott was going for and he pulled it off.

It's the cliche approach to everything. Hopefully she'll be a Blade Runner and Deckard will be sought out by her for help on a Replicant case.

Or what if: This female character is a Blade Runner and she has to hunt Deckard who still may or may not be a replicant. It would make a great internal and external conflict. THAT would be a great way to continue the story. But I won't limit myself to just that idea, hopefully whatever this is, makes sense.

I remember reading an interview with Scott where he said that Deckard wouldn't even show up until the "third act." But that he'd still have an important role in the story. I wonder if that's still the plan now that Scott's not directing the movie himself, and if the "female protagonist" is still a go (I hope so).

So does anyone else want to throw out the obligatory "Emily Blunt should play the lead" suggestion or should I?

Yeah...I watched the Final Cut last night. While I enjoyed it more than I did as a kid, it was still so-so for me, though I certainly see why people would love it.

To me, all the characters were extremely under-developed, like they were only vague outlines of interesting characters. The love story felt really forced and the initial love scene had a really uncomfortable rapey vibe. The visuals and world building were wonderful though, but I feel like there was too much emphasis on that when it should have been the characters. It was absolutely an interesting movie in design and concept but it just fell flat for me. I'll probably check out the other cuts at some point though!

I was thinking about this, actors in their prime - just the way they move, act, talk etc compared to actors that have aged and are naturally slower - i don't know how i feel about it, but i definitely get the sense that you don't quite get the performance you were expecting.
It's like how in Rome, leaders were immortalized in statues and they were heroic, big, brave and bold. When in reality, they were not (most cases).

So to see a mid 70's ford on screen, i don't know, i just think it would be a detriment to his legacy.

Or Meryl Streep. Or Gary Oldman, Christopher Plummer, Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, etc.

Stuff like this is rarely a good idea to me. What I mean specifically is when they try to get old casts to replay characters in a sequel 20 or so years later.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Dumb & Dumber To
Basic Instinct 2
Live Free or Die Hard / A Good Day to Die Hard
Psycho II, III, IV
Rambo
Rocky Balboa

Do these EVER turn out to be fantastic? Or aren't they just always "okay"?

Another reason why I'm frightened about Episode VII.

I thought Rocky Balboa was actually pretty good, while Rambo was fun as hell. The rest on that list not so much.

With Star Wars though, the focus will be on the new gang, vs. the examples above.

I liked Live Free or Die Hard and Rambo myself, Rocky Balboa is maybe the best Rocky film since the original, Psycho II is an underrated movie, and KOTCS wasn't terrible imo. I'll take it over Temple of Doom any day.

We've got Episode VII coming, Alien 5 and a Blade Runner 2. What 70s/80s sci fi property will get a sequel next?

KOTCS is pretty meh. I prefer the chaotic Temple of Doom over it anyway. At least, Doom had some drive, while KOTCS had a tone of indifference.

Or Meryl Streep. Or Gary Oldman, Christopher Plummer, Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, etc.

With the exception of M, Plummer, Mirren, they are not at the age or mental state Harrison Ford appears to be in. Let's not wear rose tinted glasses, his interviews seem uncomfortable at best.

Some actors get better with age (see Paul Newman).

But when a character like Indi ages in the way Ford has, let's be honest, it seems time has finally caught up with him, i feel the character representation is not the one from the original trilogy and to some respects that's only natural, but i do think, unfortunately it's time to hang up the whip!!

I agree, and i fully appreciate there are stories to tell of a matured, retired Indy - as an example, i loved Gran Torino and that suited the nature of Eastwood.

Let's have a retired Indy out in the middle of no where, roaming from town to town that take his fancy - Jerusalem as an example - he is looking for something and writing his memoirs at the same time.

Something dawns on him that an adventure he had 40 years earlier wasn't completed, he retraces his steps and makes that final step to discover the McGuffin and we see two stories run parallel until the end, where we have a older, wiser indy complete the adventure.

Edit - i just realized i went off topic, ironic.

Back to BR2 - let's hope it's a unique movie, set in that universe that include HF in a respectable manner

You just listed Rocky Balboa which was great.

They were always uncomfortable. He's actually loosened up in his older age.

And despite the movie, Ford was actually pretty great returning as Indy in KOTCS.

I thought Rocky Balboa and Indy 4 were really good. I've never seen Die Hard 4, but I'm pretty sure it was well received.

Thanks for the link darkknight88 - i see what you mean now!

And this is why Chris Pratt is being hyped for Indiana Jones.
