BloodRayne II: Deliverance

Malthe on Rayne:

The first time actress Natassia Malthe met director Uwe Boll, she came away from the encounter with a distinct impression. “I thought he was nuts!” says Malthe, who’s showing her fangs in the current SKINWALKERS and has taken over the lead role of Rayne in BLOODRAYNE 2: DELIVERANCE, coming on DVD from Vivendi Visual Entertainment September 18. “But then, I like nutty people.”

A couple of weeks after the meeting, Malthe got an e-mail from the enigmatic director that said simply, “You are in BLOODRAYNE 2.” And the actress couldn’t have been more thrilled. “I love Kristanna Loken [who starred in the first film]. She’s a friend of mine, and I thought it would be a lot of fun to work with her. So I said, ‘Of course I’ll be in BLOODRAYNE 2.’ A couple of weeks later, I asked Uwe what my character’s name was, and he said, ‘Rayne.’ And I was like, ‘What?!’ ”

The reason Malthe got the role was that Loken was tied up in the Sci Fi Channel series PAINKILLER JANE and could not get away to do the sequel. “Which was kind of ironic,” notes the actress, “because at one point, I was on hold for nearly two months for that role.” Malthe accepted the part despite Boll’s worldwide reputation as a crazy director who, in the eyes of many fans, has been responsible for a string of bad movies. “I don’t judge people, and I liked the script, even though it did change toward the end and we had to rush things because of technical and scheduling changes. He was a fun director to work for, and he has a sense of humor in dealing with people. But the bottom line was that I looked at the character of Rayne and what I wanted to experience through her. I wasn’t thinking about the results; I was thinking about the journey.”

And for Malthe, the BLOODRAYNE 2 journey turned out to be an arduous one. “There was a lot of action,” she recalls, “but the worst part was the scenes in which I had to go into the swamp. It was freezing cold and super-muddy. It was so cold, that it was often difficult to speak. And then there was the day the set burned down,” she laughs. “One minute we were standing there, and the next everything just exploded.” You can read Boll’s comments on BLOODRAYNE 2 and his other recent features in Fango #266, on sale now.

She is SO hawt.

I like this comment on the DVD cover:

who knew they had breast implants back in the western days....course the first movie had girls with implants and it took place even earlier so yeah

Why must they mix up Bloodrayne and Deliverance? I mean, they can't possibly deliver a sex scene reminiscent of Deliverance. Or can they? I can only hope.

Vivendi Looking to 'Explore Full Potential' of BloodRayne Movies

A third BloodRayne movie is already in the works and Vivendi may go beyond that. And for the second BloodRayne, which is due on DVD next month, Vivendi is planning a full convergence package that includes Majesco's PC game, a digital comic book and more. We speak with Soumya Sriraman, vp of marketing at Vivendi Visual Entertainment. (pictured: Natassia Malthe)

Beginning September 18, consumers will get a three-for when they pick up the Unrated or R-rated BloodRayne 2: Deliverance ($26.98) DVD from Vivendi Visual Entertainment. The straight-to-DVD release from director Uwe Boll will include Majesco's PC game, BloodRayne, as well as the digital comic book, BloodRayne: Tibetan Heights. The two-disc DVD will also come with commentary from Boll, as well as outtakes, deleted and extended scenes and a 'making of' featurette.

The movie stars Natassia Malthe (Elektra, DOA) in the title role of Rayne, replacing original Rayne Kristanna Loken from the original film. Zack Ward (Transformers, Postal) plays the vampire Billy the Kid and Michael Pare (Eddie and the Cruisers, Postal) brings Pat Garrett to life in this Western vampire story, which is an original tale not directly linked to any of the games.

Soumya Sriraman, vice president of marketing at Vivendi Visual Entertainment, took some time to talk to GameDaily BIZ about Boll's video game movies. Vivendi packaged the original BloodRayne DVD with the PC game from Majesco, as well, and it's the only home video company that has attempted this type of full convergence.

GameDaily BIZ: Can you talk about the new movie and what kind of extras will be included?

Soumya Sriraman: Similar to the original BloodRayne film, this sequel is action-packed. We are very excited to announce that the DVD will include a full-length digital comic book from the BloodRayne series as part of the bonus features. In addition, we are also offering the original BloodRayne PC game.

BIZ: How did the first film do in terms of domestic and global sales?

SS: The BloodRayne DVD was a big success here in the U.S. It was the best selling live action title among films with less than $5 million box office in 2006.

BIZ: What impact did having the game packaged with it have on these sales?

SS: The game pack-on proved to be instrumental to the DVD's success. Since offering the game with the DVD was an industry first, it was well-received by the press. But at the end of the day, consumers really responded to the great value that the package offered. In looking at similar competitive titles, offering the game shifted the balance from rental to sell-through performance for BloodRayne.

BIZ: Can you talk about the new games and digital comics bundle and how this came about?

SS: In order to continue the success of the franchise with BloodRayne 2, we knew we needed to keep our core audience engaged by establishing new realms of entertainment. We knew we'd offer a game with the package, but had to do something new with this DVD as well. That's how we came up with bundling the original BloodRayne PC game and the BloodRayne digital comic book with the DVD. Again, we will be making industry history since no one has ever offered a full-length digital comic book on a DVD before.

BIZ: Boll has already talked about a third film set in WWII. Can you talk about this straight-to-DVD route of the franchise and how long you feel it can be sustained?

SS: BloodRayne has proven to be a solid franchise. We are looking forward to exploring its full potential with subsequent installments.

BIZ: In general, why do you think videogame movies, even those that tank in theaters, do so well on DVD?

SS: Videogame movies have a built-in core fan base that's loyal to the games. While theatrical provides a good entertainment venue for these films, video is able to provide a more encompassing interactive viewing experience with its special features that gamers really respond to.

BIZ: Are there plans to bring these films to Blu-ray or HD DVD in the future?

SS: Yes.

BIZ: Do you have any update on Alone in the Dark II DVD?

SS: Uwe Boll has started production on Alone in the Dark II. We are thrilled to participate in the process from the get-go. Look out for some exciting extras on the DVD.

BIZ: What other videogame movie properties are you working on?

SS: We are currently working on the theatrical and DVD release of Postal, another videogame property directed by Uwe Boll and starring Zack Ward. That film opens October 12.

No mention of Dungeon Siege in there, which is honestly the project of his that I'm most intrigued by - I mean, at least it stars Jason Statham.

The straight-to-DVD release from director Uwe Boll will include Majesco's PC game, BloodRayne

Wow, the entire original game? Very impressive. That title was great fun. I wasn't crazy about the sequel, but I can't argue with the first one at all.

BloodRayne II: Deliverance
Rating: 4.9

BloodRayne 2 is directed by the ever-so popular Uwe Boll. Uwe Boll is known for making movies that don’t go so well with the viewers and critics alike, but BloodRayne 2 isn’t a complete failure.

Starting the film you will notice Uwe’s unclear vision and messy style, especially when it comes to keeping the camera still. You might get used to it when the movie is half way over, but this is one big drawback to the film. Another is the storyline, or lack of storyline. The use of the wild wild west was unique for a vampire movie, and it actually works for this film. But do you really need to make Billy The Kid into a vampire ... especially a vampire with a Dracula accent?

Fans of the video game will most likely be let down. In an interview with Uwe Boll (which is included on the DVD) he says that this movie is closer to the game because "she has guns now" and "the way she looks with the long leather dress". Uwe, try sticking closer to the video game and maybe, just maybe you’ll finally achieve a good movie.

Uwe is quite possibly one of the worst directors and writers of our day, but he seems to get slightly better with each film. I said "slightly". Think back to the first time you saw "House Of The Dead", you probably never finished it like most people I know. So Mr. Boll does seem to get a little better, he just needs a lot of improvement when it comes to story and character development. You can’t just throw in gore and nudity and expect good reviews.

The extremely beautiful Natassia Malthe takes over for Kristianna Loken, it seems that Ms. Loken wasn’t able to reprise her role from the first film because of prior engagements. Natassia, which we had the honor of interviewing a couple years ago, does a descent job at playing the lead character. I say descent because the script didn’t allow her to reflect who Rayne really is, and what she’s capable of doing.

Overall, this is a descent rental.

Damn, I can't believe people are actually pouring money into this trash.

It's Boll's track record again. Nothing new and apparently the studios don't care.

Wow, if these are the best reviews the movies' publicists could get with their selective issuing of pre-release copies, then I can't imagine the pounding they're gonna get when the REAL critics get their hands on it! For me, the reviews are easily the best part of an Uwe Boll release. :D

BloodRayne 2

The Movie:
I come bearing bad news. Uwe Boll has made another lackluster film. I know you're probably thinking "This can't be true!" But alas, Boll's losing streak continues in the form of "Bloodrayne 2: Deliverance."
The story (or lack thereof) involves Rayne attempting to rid a western town of a vampire gang led by Billy The Kid. In order to save the townspeople and eliminate the evil, Rayne has to round up a gang of vampire killers to finish the job.

The main problem as I see it is that Rayne is one of the single wimpiest and most easily defeated heroes to ever grace the screen. She gets pistol whipped and knocked out by an old fart, she has to assemble a team of vampire killers because she can't do the job herself, and she gets thrashed in the climactic battle with Billy The Kid. The only reason she never croaked was because people kept saving her life. Where's River when you need her?

In addition, the movie is flat out boring. I'm glad Boll cut out a lot of the slow-motion action and focused more on drama, but there's no drama to be found here. If you have cardboard characters that have no complexity to them whatsoever, you're pretty much reduced to watching soulless characters with bad western accents interacting with one another while a sappy weepy music score accompanies the scene. It doesn't help that Kristanna Loken replacement Natassia Malthe has no screen presence. You would think Loken was lucky to escape the sequel, but she went on to do far worse- the "Painkiller Jane" TV series.

Naturally, "Bloodrayne 2" also contains all the ulcer inducing Uwe Boll-isms we've come to know and loathe and even some new ones! There's slow-motion death scenes, the dumb as nails dialogue, scenes dragging on needlessly due to a lack of editing, and vampires dying and sounding like squealing pigs, etc.

I do have one favorable comment- the location shooting was worthwhile. The western town brought a sense of realism and atmosphere to a film that virtually had none.

The DVD

Video:
The anamorphic widescreen picture quality resembles an old VHS tape. Considering how much effort went into making this disk, you'd think the film would at least LOOK better.

Sound: An English 5.1 Dolby Surround track and a Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo track have been included. The 5.1 Dolby surround sound isn't going to wow you, but it fits the film. There's a good balance between the dialogue, music, and gun play.

Extras: 1. A digital comic book titled "Tibetan Heights #1." I couldn't get into the comic as I was annoyed by the comic being presented in a sideways tilt.

2. 3 extended scenes called "Mayor shoot, gets shot," "Newton is part of the west," and "Newton interviews Mayor."

3. 15 minutes of dreadful quality deleted scenes. Most scenes consist of characters riding horses. Riveting stuff.

4. A 14 1/2 minute interview with the cast and director. The memorable moments: Uwe Boll talks about ripping off John Ford and Sergio Leone and actor Zack Ward claims his performance was better than Ben Kingsley's in "Bloodrayne." Sorry to break it to you Zack, but that's nothing to brag about.

5. An eye-rolling trailer for Uwe Boll's upcoming "Postal."

6. Spanish and English subtitles.

7. A hilarious audio commentary with Uwe Boll and Mathias Neumann (who leaves halfway through). As you can imagine, listening to Uwe defend his work is priceless. Here's a sample of the memorable quotes in the commentary:

"Zack Ward can replace people like Gary Oldman."

"Even with movies like "House Of The Dead" and "Alone In The Dark," they are far, far above 95% of the new world film productions, also in the world. This is a reality."- What?? Granted, the production valies on Boll's work is superior to many indie films, but so what? Boll's films have a larger budget. Having high production values doesn't compensate for a poor script. There's a reason critics like myself are criticizing Boll's films- they are severely flawed. If Boll directed something other than mindless video games films (whose sole existence is to make money), forgot about slow-motion, and actually put his heart and soul into a project, maybe the critical response would be kinder. Don't literally bash the people who are speaking the ugly truth about the quality of your pictures Mr. Boll.

8. Disk 2 contains a Bloodrayne PC DVD-ROM videogame. Unfortunately, the game was not compatible with my computer as I didn't have a proper video card.

Final Thoughts:
Unless you celebrate the works of Uwe Boll, I can safely say "Avoid BloodRayne 2: Deliverance." Until Boll makes a film worthy of acclaim, do not contribute money to further his career.

"Lackluster" means this film must be better than his usual "utter dreck." :oldrazz:

I truly pity people who pay money to see this.
