Bohemian Rhapsody

PTSD from working on a film set.

If someone could catapult this p**** off the planet, that’d be lovely.

It'd be one thing if he was a young director fresh off a small independent debut and jumping straight into the deep end of big-budget studio-filmmaking. But he's not. He's no stranger to this. Hell, this movie is hardly even one of the bigger projects he's worked on. I'm just saying, you could be working a minimum wage job and your employer will still hold you to a certain standard regarding absences. When you're working in a multi-billion dollar industry, where your absence costs millions of dollars, there is simply no excuse.

And LOL at him actually using the phrase "PTSD" in describing his state of mind.

Damage limitation. A desperate attempt at salvaging a career.

It certainly doesn't.

If I wake up one morning to a phone call that a loved one has fallen seriously ill, you better believe my first call is to my boss explaining the situation and that I cannot come into work that day.

It's your job. You can't just "no-show" for days on end without a word of explanation, and then start throwing out excuses after you've been canned. That's high school behavior. There is absolutely no reason Singer couldn't have called one of the producers to let them know what was going on, especially if it was a parent.

Of course though it wasn't the first time he walked off the set for Bohemian and far from the first time he walked off or disappeared from filming a movie. There were rumors he went AWOL for a bit back on X2 (when he wasn't fighting with Berry and Cummings) and the article states he did it on SR and APOC.

Yet he kept his jobs and kept getting hired by Fox, and having an office on Fox's lot, even when Fox felt they had to warn him to be professional before he even began filming and send in a DGA watchdog.

Singer had been warned before production began by both Fox Film chairman and CEO Stacey Snider and Fox Film vice chairman and president of production Emma Watts that they wouldn't tolerate any unprofessional behavior on his part. A representative from the Directors Guild of America also arrived on set to monitor the situation.

So Fox finally puts it's foot down with 2 weeks of filming left to go? Why?

When your long time powerful publicist (Simon Halls, husband of Matt Bomer) dumps you it's bad news coming.

I wonder if this film will get any major reshoots or not. If it gets major reshoots, whoever the new director may get full director credit. If the new director only needs to finish up 2 weeks and nothing more, Singer gets all the credit.

According to DGA rules a new director has to shoot 70% of the film to get a Director's credit. That would be prohibitively expensive especially for a film of this size where they're not expecting Star Wars B.O.

“With fewer than three weeks to shoot remaining, I asked Fox for some time off so I could return to the U.S. to deal with pressing health matters concerning one of my parents. This was a very taxing experience, which ultimately took a serious toll on my own health. Unfortunately, the studio was unwilling to accommodate me and terminated my services. This was not my decision and it was beyond my control,”

If that is true then Fox is the bad guy here.

What I want to know is if Singer had been going off the rails as recent as Apocalypse, then how on earth did he get this gig? A gig in which May and Taylor have been massively protective of their legacy.

What would be the point of outright publicly lying about such a specific personal issue, when he could just decline to comment. That's not "creative differences" or anything remotely vague, that's "I have an ailing loved one". Something he could potentially have to prove if he was called on it. Basically all he would have to do is show correspondence indicating he or representatives requested the time off and were denied, which, assuming it's true, would be pretty easy to do. I dunno. Not the way I thought this was going to go at all.

Not even sure why Bryan Singer was still able to get work given his shockingly mediocre abilities as a film-maker combined with about two decades worth of rumors regarding his sexual misconduct.

Dollars to donuts this has something to do with said rumors.

You don't just leave set and all these people working without first notifying them and the studio. Production has to shut down or money is going down the tubes. He still has responsibilities to his employers.

His mom may be sick...but I tend to doubt that he actually left because of it. Sometimes you can lie and it still have a basis in truth. Disappearing from sets is a regular thing for him over the years...was his mom sick all of those times?

I cannot imagine that Fox, who has had a long working relationship with Singer would just simply fire him because he had to take care of a sick parent. To put up with all of his crap on past movies, but sick parent? He's gotta go. You compare this to the Zack Snyder/WB situation where true tragedy happened and both parties were totally respectful to each other. I mean, do you think Fox wants the publicity that they fired Singer? You think they want this stink associated with their film?

Lots of people have been pointing this out. Talented women and POC directors can't get work, but the industry coddles people like Singer. Anyone else pulled this kind of crap would be fired the first time it happened.

Those stories of Singer ghosting in post on SR are true. He's had this problem for years, even as far back as X1.

Something big is coming for him and Fox knows it.

Singer was supposedly having heated arguments with cast members including Tom Hollander who supposedly quit but came back after reassurances from the studio.

I think Singer is probably using his sick parent as a excuse. Things were clearly not going right on the movie set for some time.

Eddie the Eagle's got the kind of heart I'd like to see in a Queen biopic.

Hope he does enough to get the credit.

If he shoots the majority of footage used in the film, he'll most likely get directing credit. If he is only shooting the next two weeks and no big reshoots, Singer would probably end up with the solo director credit.

We shall see.

If the situation with his dying mother is true, then you know what? My heart does go out to the dude. But Fox was right to fire him. Disappearing off your set should never be tolerated... especially if you're the director?!

The fact is they put up with Singer's behavior before. Many times. Heard stories of money (not per diem pocket change - major dough) disappearing out of thin air during the Superman Returns shoot and how Warner Brothers' accounting department couldn't make heads or tails over it. Such an extreme situation that when the studio signed Singer to another expensive "Pay or Play" deal on the Superman sequel (which instead resulted in Jack the Giant Killer), part of the stipulation was to shoot closer to Burbank... so they could keep an eye on the money. But such a situation isn't exclusive to him - happens frequently.

Something doesn't smell right, and it's not to do with "Maybe... maybe not..." allegations on the horizon. I think it has more to do with Fox wanting to look competent and in charge... in lieu of a major buyout from Disney, a company that notoriously doesn't take crap from any one filmmaker. Mess with the Mouse and you will be replaced in an instant and the film in question will still make billions. Not doing anything and letting "Same ol, same ol" continue makes Fox look bad as they are closing out this deal. Suddenly Singer's being MIA from the set (which everyone here agrees is beyond egregious) and having it out with his cast is unacceptable. When it usually was... because Singer made them a lot of money.

But a Disney buyout (rightfully) outweighs Singer's internal stock with the studio. Hence suddenly these stories get out, when they never did before. Just some food for thought.

this all makes sense to me

Wasn't Dexter Fletcher originally attached to direct "Bohemian Rhapsody" with Sacha Baron Cohen a few years ago?
